Claims
- 1. A photostable cyanine dye having a structure represented by the formula I or II:
- .PHI..sup.+ -L=.PSI..multidot.Q.sup.- (I)
- .PHI.=L-.PSI..sup.+ .multidot.Q.sup.- (II)
- wherein Q.sup.- is an anion represented by the formula III: ##STR24## wherein in formulas I, II and III M denotes a transition metal atom, R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 each denote a hydrogen atom a halogen atom, an alkyl group, or a dialkylamino group; and .PHI. and .PSI. are each radicals represented by the following formulas: ##STR25## in which R.sub.1', R.sub.1', R.sub.11 and R.sub.11', each represent a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aryl or alkenyl group; wherein said substituent is one or more members selected from the group consisting of sulfonic group, alkyl carbonyloxy group, alkylamino group, alkylcarbamoyl group, alkylsulfamoyl group, hydroxy group, carboxy group and halogen atom; R2 and R3 represent an alkyl or aryl group; R4 and R4', each represent one or a plurality of groups which are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of alkyl, aryl, heterocyclic, halogen, alkoxy, arloxy, alylthio, arylthio, alkylcarbonyl, arylcarbonyl, alkoxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl, alkylcarbonyloxy, arylcarbonyloxy, alkylamide, arylamide, alkylcarbamoyl, arylcarbamoyl, alkylamine, arylamino, carboxylic, alkylsulfonyl, arysulfonyl, alkylsulfonamide, arylsulfonamide, alkylsulfamoyl, arylsulfamoyl, cyano and nitro; p, q, r, s and t are integers from 0 to 4; and L is a polymethine connecting group represented by the formulas: ##STR26## wherein y is hydrogen or a monovalent radical selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, di-lower alkylamino, dephenylamino, lower alkylphenylamino, morpholino, imidazolino, ethoxycarbonyl-piperazino, alkylcarbonyloxy, alkylthio, nitro, and halogen, R.sub.8 and R.sub.9 are hydrogen or lower alkyl; and the symbol 1 used in formula L VI is the integer 0 or 1.
- 2. A photostable cyanine dye according to claim 1, wherein L is a polymethine connecting group for the formation of a mono-, di-, tri- or tetra-carbocyanine dye.
- 3. A photostable cyanine dye according to claim 1, wherein M is one member selected from the group consisting of Ni, Co, Cu, Mn, Pd and Pt.
- 4. A photostable cyanine dye according to claim 3, wherein M is Ni or Co.
