Claims
- 1. A compound suitable for use as a constituent of a ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal composition, being an ester of the formula: ##STR70## in which * is an asymmetrically substituted carbon atom; R.sub.1 represents C.sub.1 to C.sub.12 alkyl or alkoxy; rings A, B and D each independently represent phenyl, chloro- or fluoro- substituted phenyl, or cyclohexyl; n is 0 or 1; Y may be a single bond or CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 if n is 0, or Y may be a single bond, CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 COO or COO if n is 1.
- 2. A compound according to claim 1 in which R.sub.1 is C.sub.3 to C.sub.10 n-alkyl or n-alkoxy.
- 3. A compound according to claim 1 characterised by a formula: ##STR71## where (F) indicates that a fluorine substituent may be present on the ring.
- 4. A compound according to claim 1 characterised by a formula: ##STR72##
- 5. A compound according to claim 1 characterised by a formula: ##STR73##
- 6. A compound according to claim 1 characterised by a formula: ##STR74##
- 7. A compound according to claim 1 characterised by a formula: ##STR75##
- 8. A ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal material being a mixture of at least two compounds, characterised in that at least one is a compound as claimed in claim 1.
- 9. A liquid crystal electro-optic display device, characterised in that it uses a liquid crystal material as claimed in claim 8.
