Claims
- 1. An apparatus comprising a tubular filter element having a first layer of a filter medium including first and second opposite ends and a plurality of axially extending pleats wherein one of the axially extending pleats of said first layer includes two radially spaced seals sealing the first and second ends of the first layer together; and further including a second layer of a filter medium disposed adjacent to the first layer of filter medium, the second layer of filter medium having first and second opposite ends and a plurality of axially extending pleats wherein one of the axially extending pleats of said second layer includes the two radially spaced seals sealing the first and second ends of the second layer together with the first and second ends of the first layer.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein each of the ends includes an axially extending edge and wherein the axially extending edges of the ends of the first and second layers are disposed in register.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein each of the ends includes an axially extending edge and wherein the axially extending edges extend in the same direction.
- 4. An apparatus comprising a tubular filter element having first and second layers of filter media, each layer having first and second axially extending edges, the first layer of filter medium including a first seal sealing a first portion of the first layer of filter medium with a second portion of the first layer of filter medium, wherein the first and second edges of the first layer extend in the same direction near the first seal, the second layer of filter medium including a second seal sealing a first portion of the second layer of filter medium with a second portion of the second layer of filter medium, the second seal being disposed at a position radially spaced from the first seal, wherein the first and second edges of the second layer extend in the same direction near the second seal.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the tubular filter element includes a plurality of axially extending pleats and the first and second seals are disposed along a single pleat.
- 6. An apparatus comprising a tubular filter element having first and second layers of filter media, each including first and second opposite ends and a plurality of axially extending pleats wherein one of the axially extending pleats includes first and second seals radially spaced from each other, the first seal sealing the first and second ends of the first layer together and the second seal sealing the first and second ends of the second layer together.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the first end of the first layer includes a first axially extending edge and the second end of the first layer includes a second axially extending edge, wherein the first and second axially extending edges are disposed in register.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the first end of the second layer includes a third axially extending edge and the second end of the second layer includes a fourth axially extending edge, and wherein the third and fourth axially extending edges are disposed in register.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the first, second, third, and fourth axially extending edges are disposed in register.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the first, second, third, and fourth axially extending edges face radially outward in the same direction.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the first and second axially extending edges face radially outward in the same direction.
- 12. The apparatus as in one of claims 1-11 in which the seals comprise a heat seal.
- 13. The apparatus as in one of claims 1-11 in which the apparatus further comprises a third layer of filter medium disposed adjacent to the first or second layer of filter medium.
