Claims
- 1. A data packet transmitting video information in a communications network comprising:a header portion comprising: a packet synchronization field; a header field comprising a packet type sub-field providing indicia of a type of payload, and a continuity counter; a private data field associated with application specific data for facilitating payload handling; and a destination address field; a payload portion comprising: digital video information or internet protocol data; and a trailer field.
- 2. The data packet of claim 1 wherein said digital video information is an MPEG encoded packet.
- 3. The data packet of claim 2 wherein said digital video information comprises an MPEG header and a portion of an internet protocol packet.
- 4. The data packet of claim 1 wherein said internet protocol data is a portion of an internet protocol packet.
- 5. The data packet of claim 1 wherein said packet type sub-field identifies whether the payload contains said internet protocol data or said digital video information.
- 6. The data packet of claim 1 wherein said trailer field comprises a cyclic redundancy code.
- 7. The data packet of claim 1 wherein said destination address field comprises a stream number sub-field and a node-identification sub-field.
- 8. The data packet of claim 1 wherein the payload carries data at a rate of one of a constant bit rate, variable bit rate, or undefined bit rate.
- 9. The data packet of claim 1 wherein said destination address field is a virtual path identifier or a virtual channel identifier.
- 10. A communications network for propagating data packets comprising:a content server coupled to a plurality of neighborhood servers; a network manager, coupled to said content server, for addressing data packets to a destination where said data packets comprise: a header portion comprising: a packet synchronization field; a header field comprising a packet type sub-field providing indicia of a type of payload, and a continuity counter; a private data field associated with application specific data for facilitating payload handling; and a destination address field; a payload portion comprising: digital video information or internet protocol data; and an error correction code field.
- 11. The communications network of claim 10 wherein said digital video information is an MPEG encoded packet.
- 12. The communications network of claim 10 wherein said internet protocol data is a portion of an internet protocol packet.
- 13. The communications network of claim 10 wherein said digital video information comprises an MPEG header and a portion of an internet protocol packet.
- 14. The communications network of claim 10 wherein said packet type sub-field identifies whether the payload contains said internet protocol data or said digital video information.
- 15. The communications network of claim 10 wherein said error correction field comprises a cyclic redundancy code.
- 16. The communications network of claim 10 wherein said destination address field comprises a stream number sub-field and a node-identification sub-field.
- 17. The communications network of claim 10 wherein said content server is a source of digital video information.
- 18. The communications network of claim 10 wherein said neighborhood servers are arranged in a ring topology.
- 19. The communications network of claim 10 wherein said neighborhood servers are arranged in a star topology.
- 20. The communications network of claim 10 wherein said neighborhood servers are arranged in a combination star and ring topology.
- 21. The communications network of claim 10 further comprising a plurality of switched nodes and said destination field is a virtual path identifier or a virtual channel identifier that is used to route the packet through the switches.
- 22. The communications network of claim 10 wherein said payload comprises one of a constant bit rate data, variable bit rate data, and undefined bit rate data.
- 23. The communications network of claim 10 wherein said neighborhood servers support quality of service.
