Claims
- 1. A method for generating a magnetic security signature on a magnetically recordable media comprising the steps of:
- A. producing a data representative signal to be recorded on said magnetically recordable media; and,
- B. recording the data representative signal on the magnetically recordable media while controlling the rate of change of the recording signal to extend the length of time that the magnetic flux transition remains on the most curved portion of the hysteresis loop of the magnetically recordable media.
- 2. A method of providing for the security of magnetically encoded data on a magnetically recordable media, comprising:
- A. encoding a data representative signal magnetically on the media;
- B. deriving a timing data stream of the inherent timing variations of the magnetically encoded data in combination with the randomly varying effect of the magnetic media by reading the magnetically encoded data;
- C. storing a representation of the timing data stream as an initial jitter signature number;
- D. comparing the timing data stream of a subsequent reading of the magnetically encoded data to the timing data stream generated from the initially stored jitter signature number; and,
- E. indicating the results of the comparison.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the jitter signature is enhanced by recording a plurality of random saturated flux transitions on the media.
- 4. The method of claim 2, wherein the jitter signature is enhanced by recording deliberate random jitter on the media.
- 5. The method of claim 2 wherein the jitter signature is enhanced by controlling, during recording, the rate of change of the recording data representative signal, to extend the length of time that the magnetic flux transition remains on the most curved portion of the hysteresis loop of the magnetically recordable media.
- 6. The method of claim 2, wherein the jitter signature is derived from a measurement of the ratio of the separation of adjacent peaks of the encoded data representative signal.
- 7. The method of claim 2, wherein high resolution digital techniques are used to read the timing data stream of the encoded data representative signal.
- 8. The method of claim 2, wherein the jitter signature is stored in a representative form on the media.
- 9. The method of claim 2, wherein the jitter signature is stored in a digital coding scheme.
- 10. An apparatus for providing for the security of magnetically encoded data on a magnetically recordable media, comprising:
- a means for magnetically encoding a data representative signal on the media;
- a means for detecting a timing data stream of the inherent timing variations of the magnetically encoded data in combination with the randomly varying effect of the magnetic media by reading the magnetically encoded data signal;
- a means for storing a representation of the timing data stream as an initial jitter signature number;
- a means for comparing the timing data stream of a subsequent reading of the magnetically encoded data to the timing data stream generated from the initially stored jitter signature number; and,
- a means for indicating the results of the comparison.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10, further comprising a means to enhance the jitter signature by recording random saturated flux transitions on the media.
- 12. An apparatus of claim 10, further comprising a means to enhance the jitter signature by recording deliberate random jitter on the media.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 10, further comprising a means to enhance the jitter signature by controlling, during recording, the rate of change of the recording data representative signal, to extend the length of time that the magnetic flux transition remains on the most curved portion of the hysteresis loop of the magnetically recordable media.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 10, further comprising a means to store the jitter signature in a representative form on the media.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 10, further comprising a means to store the jitter signature in a representative form in a digital coding scheme.
- 16. A method of identifying a magnetic security signature from magnetically encoded data, comprising the steps of:
- A. detecting a timing data stream of the inherent timing variations of the magnetically encoded data in combination with the randomly varying effect of the magnetic media by reading the magnetically encoded data after encoding; and,
- B. deriving a representation of the jitter pattern of the data stream.
- 17. The method of claim 16, further comprising the step of:
- C. representing the jitter pattern as a checksum.
- 18. The method of claim 17, further comprising the step of:
- D. storing the checksum in a representative form on the media.
- 19. The method of claim 16, further comprising the step of:
- C. representing the jitter pattern as a plurality of checksums.
- 20. The method of claim 19, further comprising the step of:
- D, storing the plurality of checksums in a representative form on the media.
- 21. An apparatus for identifying magnetically recordable media having a data representative signal recorded thereon, using controlled variations in the timing of encoded data in combination with the random effect of the magnetic media, comprising:
- a means for determining an existing pattern of jitter in at least a portion of the recorded data representative signal by reading the magnetically encoded data after encoding; and,
- a means for generating data representative of the existing pattern of jitter.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the data representative of the existing pattern of jitter is recorded in a separate database.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the data representative of the existing pattern of jitter is recorded in a separate piece of media.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the data representative of the existing pattern of jitter is recorded on the media.
- 25. The apparatus of claim 21 further comprising:
- a means for determining a subsequent pattern of jitter in said at least a portion of the recorded data representative signal by reading the magnetically encoded data;
- a means for generating data representative of the subsequent pattern of jitter;
- a means for comparing the data representative of the existing pattern of jitter and the data representative of the subsequent pattern of jitter; and,
- a means for utilizing the results of the data comparing means.
