Pepper spray and tear gas have generally been the two of the most used irritants to gain compliance. However, there are drawbacks to these irritants. Both become airborne and impact anyone in the general area once deployed. This results in unintended victims such as bystanders or law enforcement being exposed to unnecessary pepper spray or tear gas.
The effect of tear gas or pepper spray generally includes excessive eye pain and difficulty breathing. Most people require some type of medical treatment after being exposed to these chemical irritants. This has resulted in law enforcement and private security firms being reluctant to implement these forms of compliance.
The present subject matter is a de-escalation spray that is an alternative to traditional pepper spray. The de-escalation spray only affects the intended target, does not cause respiratory distress, is water soluble, easily cleans up, and is a safe de-escalation tool.
In some embodiments, the de-escalation spray may be used in a ceiling mounted threat suppression system. This acts as an additional deterrent to theft or violence in a variety of settings, including civilian use.
The present subject matter comprises of acetic acid, citric acid, ammonium hydroxide, and water. The composition comprises of less than 20% acetic acid, less than 8% citric acid, and less than 1% ammonium hydroxide buffer.
The acetic and citric acid act as the irritant while the ammonium hydroxide buffer limits the acidity. The pH of the composition is 5.8.
The present subject matter has HMIS ratings of Health 1, Flammability 0, and Physical Hazards 0.
