Claims
- 1. A stabilized syndiotactic-1,2-polybutadiene composition which is comprised of syndiotactic-1,2-polybutadiene and a substituted benzoic acid having the structural formula: wherein R1 represents —OH, wherein R6 represents an alkyl group containing from 1 to about 12 carbon atoms; and wherein R2, R3, R4 and R5 can be the same or different and represent hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups containing from 1 to about 12 carbon atoms.
- 2. A stabilized syndiotactic-1,2-polybutadiene composition as specified in claim 1 wherein the substituted benzoic acid is selected from the group consisting of salicylic acid, thiosalicylic acid and acetylsalicylic acid.
- 3. A stabilized syndiotactic-1,2-polybutadiene composition as specified in claim 2 wherein the substituted benzoic acid is present in an amount which is within the range of about 0.04 phr to about 1 phr.
- 4. A stabilized syndiotactic-1,2-polybutadiene composition as specified in claim 2 wherein the stabilized syndiotactic-1,2-polybutadiene composition is further comprised of at least one residual cobalt compound.
- 5. A stabilized syndiotactic-1,2-polybutadiene composition as specified in claim 4 wherein the substituted benzoic acid is salicylic acid.
- 6. A stabilized syndiotactic-1,2-polybutadiene composition as specified in claim 4 wherein the substituted benzoic acid is thiosalicylic acid.
- 7. A stabilized syndiotactic-1,2-polybutadiene composition as specified in claim 5 wherein the salicylic acid is present in an amount which is within the range of about 0.2 phr to about 0.8 phr.
- 8. A stabilized syndiotactic-1,2-polybutadiene composition as specified in claim 5 wherein the salicylic acid is present in an amount which is within the range of about 0.4 phr to about 0.6 phr.
- 9. A process for synthesizing and deactivating syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene which comprises (1) polymerizing 1,3-butadiene monomer in the aqueous medium in the presence of a catalyst system which is comprised of (a) transition metal compound, (b) an organoaluminum compound and (c) at least one member selected from the group consisting of carbon disulfide, phenyl isothiocyanate and xanthic acid to produce an aqueous medium which contains the syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene; and (2) subsequently adding a substituted benzoic acid to the aqueous medium which contains the syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene to deactivate the catalyst system.
- 10. A process as specified in claim 9 wherein said polymerization is a suspension polymerization.
- 11. A process as specified in claim 10 wherein the level of oxygen in the aqueous medium is reduced by the addition of an oxygen scavenger to be within the range of about 0.01 ppm to about 4 ppm.
- 12. A process as specified in claim 11 wherein the oxygen scavenger is selected from the group consisting of sulfites, hydrogen sulfites, dithionates, hydroquinone, catechol, resorcinol, hydrazine, pyrogallol, gallate, ascorbic acid, ascorbate, isoascorbic acid, isoascorbate, glucose, lignin, dibutylhydroxytoluene, butylhydoxylanisole, ferrous salts, metal powders, sodium thiosulfate, sodium alum, disodium hydrogen phosphate, activated clay, mordenite, hydroxylamine, diethylhydroxylamine and thiourea.
- 13. A process as specified in claim 11 wherein the oxygen scavenger is selected from the group consisting of sodium sulfite, sodium thiosulfite, sodium hydrosulfite, sodium thiosulfate and sodium metabisulfite.
- 14. A process as specified in claim 10 wherein the substituted benzoic acid is selected from the group consisting of salicylic acid, thiosalicylic acid and acetylsalicylic acid.
- 15. A process as specified in claim 14 wherein the substituted benzoic acid is added in an amount which is within the range of about 0.2 phm to about 10 phm.
- 16. A process as specified in claim 15 wherein the substituted benzoic acid is salicylic acid.
- 17. A process as specified in claim 16 wherein the substituted benzoic acid is thiosalicylic acid.
- 18. A process as specified in claim 15 wherein the substituted benzoic acid is added in an amount which is within the range of about 0.5 phm to about 5 phm.
- 19. A process as specified in claim 15 wherein the substituted benzoic acid is added in an amount which is within the range of about 1 phm to about 2 phm.
