Claims
- 1. An apparatus for encoding a wide aspect ratio television source signal to provide a television output signal for display on a television receiver, said television source signal comprising a plurality of horizontal line signals at least one of which having a main panel component having a main panel first end and a main panel second end, and at least one augmentation panel component having an augmentation panel first end adjacent to said main panel second end and an augmentation panel second end, said apparatus comprising:
- a) first extraction means for receiving said at least one horizontal line signal and extracting therefrom a first plurality of extracted signal samples representing said main panel component, a plurality of main panel redundant samples duplicative of samples of said first augmentation panel component at said augmentation panel first end, and a plurality of first transition samples;
- b) second extraction means for receiving said at least one horizontal line and for extracting therefrom a second plurality of extracted signal samples representing said at least one augmentation panel component, and a plurality of first augmentation panel redundant samples duplicative of samples of said main panel component at said main panel first end;
- c) means for weighting each of said first transition samples by a respective one of a plurality of predetermined weighting factors so as to provide weighted main panel transition samples;
- wherein said first plurality of extracted signal samples, said main panel redundant samples and said weighted main panel transition samples comprise a first extracted signal, and said second plurality of extracted signal samples and said first augmentation panel redundant samples comprise a second extracted signal, and wherein said apparatus further comprises:
- d) means for combining said first and second extracted signals so as to form said television output signal.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said weighted main panel transition samples are weighted in accordance with a cosine curve.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said television output signal provides a television picture having a wide aspect ratio.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said main panel component has a conventional aspect ratio.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said apparatus generates a plurality of horizontal synchronizing signals for synchronizing said plurality of horizontal line signals, said apparatus further comprising:
- means for generating clock signals;
- wherein said first extraction means further comprises counter means for counting said clock signals following each of said horizontal synchronization signals, and wherein said weighting means comprises means for generating multiplying signals corresponding to the number of counted clock signals, and means for multiplying at least said transition samples by said multiplying signals.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said multiplying signal generating means comprises a PROM.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said second extraction means further extracts from said at least one horizontal line a plurality of second transition samples, and said weighting means further comprises means for weighting each of said second transition samples by a respective one of a plurality of weighting factors so as to provide weighted augmentation panel transition samples.
- 8. A system for encoding a wide aspect ratio television signal into a first extracted signal and a second extracted signal, combining said first and second extracted signals to form a single television output signal, and for decoding said television output signal to provide a wide aspect ratio television display, said system comprising:
- an apparatus for encoding said wide aspect ratio television source signal, said television source signal comprising a plurality of horizontal line signals at least one of which having a main panel component having a main panel first end and a main panel second end, and at least one augmentation panel component having an augmentation panel first end adjacent to said main panel second end, and an augmentation panel second end, said apparatus comprising:
- a) first extraction means for receiving said at least one horizontal line signal and extracting therefrom a first plurality of extracted signal samples representing said main panel component, a plurality of main panel redundant samples duplicative of samples of said first augmentation panel component at said augmentation panel first end, and a plurality of first transition samples;
- b) second extraction means for receiving said at least one horizontal line and for extracting therefrom a second plurality of extracted signal samples representing said at least one augmentation panel component, and a plurality of first augmentation panel redundant samples duplicative of samples of said main panel component at said main panel first end;
- c) means for weighting each of said first transition samples by a respective one of a plurality of predetermined weighting factors so as to provide weighted main panel transition samples;
- wherein said first plurality of extracted signal samples, said main panel redundant samples and said weighted main panel transition samples comprise said first extracted signal, and said second plurality of extracted signal samples and said first augmentation panel redundant samples comprise said second extracted signal, and wherein said apparatus further comprises:
- d) means for combining said first and second extracted signals so as to form said television output signal; and
- an apparatus for decoding said output television signal, said apparatus comprising:
- e) means for separating from said output television signal, said first extracted signal and said second extracted signal;
- f) means for deriving from said first and second extracted signals a plurality of display signal samples comprising said first plurality of extracted signal samples, said main panel redundant samples, said second plurality of extracted signal samples and said first augmentation panel redundant samples;
- g) and means for combining said display signal samples so as to provide said wide aspect ratio television display.
