Claims
- 1. A system for decontaminating effluents from a greenhouse comprising:
- a soil bed reactor comprising a layer of permeable soil having means for introducing or discharging fluid from the bottom of the layer;
- means for passing air withdrawn from the greenhouse through the soil bed reactor for microbial degradation of organic material in the air;
- holding tank means for temporarily storing waste water effluent from the greenhouse; and
- means for passing waste water from the holding tank means through the soil bed reactor for microbial degradation of organic material in the waste water.
- 2. A system as recited in claim 1 further comprising an open pond downstream from the soil bed reactor and populated with animal and plant species for further degradation of organic material in waste water from the soil bed reactor.
- 3. A system as recited in claim 1 further comprising sample tank means for receiving waste water effluent from the greenhouse before passage to the holding tank means.
- 4. A system as recited in claim 1 wherein the means for passing air through the soil bed reactor passes air upwardly through the layer of soil while the means for passing waste water through the soil bed reactor passes waste water downwardly through the layer of soil.
- 5. A system as recited in claim 4 wherein the means for passing liquid through the layer of soil comprises a drip irrigation system for introducing liquid into the layer of soil below the upper surface of the layer.
- 6. A system as recited in claim 1 further comprising means for sparging air into the holding tank means and means for passing air from the holding tank means through the soil bed reactor.
- 7. A system as recited in claim 1 further comprising a chemical filter and means for diverting air from the holding tank means through the chemical filter while air from the greenhouse is being passed through the soil bed reactor.
- 8. A greenhouse fumigation system comprising:
- a greenhouse for growth of plant species;
- a sample tank for receiving rinse water from the greenhouse;
- means for assaying presence of pesticides in rinse water from the sample tank;
- a holding tank;
- means for transferring water from the sample tank to the holding tank;
- means for assaying presence of pesticides in water from the holding tank;
- a soil bed reactor comprising a layer of permeable soil having means for introducing or discharging fluid from the bottom of the layer;
- means for transferring water from the holding tank to the soil bed reactor for passage through the layer of soil and degradation of pesticides in the water;
- means for aerating water in the sample tank and the holding tank;
- means for passing air from the sample tank and holding tank through the soil bed reactor; and
- means for discharging water from the soil bed reactor.
- 9. A system as recited in claim 8 wherein the means for passing air through the soil bed reactor passes air upwardly through the layer of soil while the means for passing water through the soil bed reactor passes water downwardly through the layer of soil.
- 10. A system as recited in claim 8 further comprising means for passing air from the greenhouse through the soil bed reactor.
- 11. A system as recited in claim 10 further comprising a chemical filter and means for diverting air from the sample tank and holding tank through the chemical filter while air from the greenhouse is being passed through the soil bed reactor.
