Abstract
A decorative closeout assembly includes a gap hider. A U-shaped body portion is constructed from a fabric and includes a plurality of peripheral tabs. First and second inwardly-extending flaps extend inwardly and are operably coupled with a laterally-extending flexible tensioner extending between the first and second inwardly-extending flaps and configured to maintain the body portion taut. A plurality of hooked barbs extend from a bottom side of the U-shaped body portion. An upper back support includes a U-shaped peripheral channel for receiving the plurality of hooked barbs.
Description
FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE

The present disclosure generally relates to an upper seatback closeout assembly, and more particularly to a decorative and functional upper seatback closeout assembly.


BACKGROUND OF THE DISCLOSURE

Seating assemblies and the flexible nature of those seating assemblies is becoming more important in today's world. The value of having an adjustable seating assembly provides increased worktime and increased comfort to an individual. Some seating assemblies include upper thoracic support that is adjustable between forward and rearward positions. Providing an aesthetically pleasing upper back support that is consistent with and generally seamless with the remainder of the seat provides value to the consumer.


SUMMARY OF THE DISCLOSURE

According to one aspect of the present disclosure, a decorative closeout assembly includes a gap hider. A U-shaped body portion is constructed from a fabric and includes a plurality of peripheral tabs. First and second inwardly-extending flaps extend inwardly and are operably coupled with a laterally-extending flexible tensioner extending between the first and second inwardly-extending flaps and configured to maintain the body portion taut. A plurality of hooked barbs extend from a bottom side of the U-shaped body portion. An upper back support includes a U-shaped peripheral channel for receiving the plurality of hooked barbs.


According to another aspect of the present disclosure, a decorative closeout assembly includes a gap hider. A U-shaped body portion is constructed from a fabric and includes a plurality of peripheral tabs. Each of the peripheral tabs includes a connecting aperture. First and second inwardly-extending flaps extend inwardly and are operably coupled with a tensioner extending between the first and second inwardly-extending flaps. An inner closeout panel includes a plurality of stakes for coupling with a connecting aperture of each peripheral tab.


According to yet another aspect of the present disclosure, a decorative closeout assembly includes a gap hider. A body portion includes a plurality of peripheral tabs. First and second inwardly-extending flaps extend inwardly and are operably coupled with a tensioner extending between the first and second inwardly-extending flaps. A plurality of hooked barbs extend from a bottom side of the body portion. An upper back support includes a U-shaped peripheral channel for receiving the plurality of hooked barbs.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE EMBODIMENTS

For purposes of description herein, the terms “upper,” “lower,” “right,” “left,” “rear,” “front,” “vertical,” “horizontal,” and derivatives thereof shall relate to the disclosure as oriented in FIG. 1. However, it is to be understood that the disclosure may assume various alternative orientations, except where expressly specified to the contrary. It is also to be understood that the specific devices and processes illustrated in the attached drawings, and described in the following specification are simply exemplary embodiments of the inventive concepts defined in the appended claims. Hence, specific dimensions and other physical characteristics relating to the embodiments disclosed herein are not to be considered as limiting, unless the claims expressly state otherwise.

Referring to the embodiment generally illustrated in FIGS. 1-11, reference numeral 10 generally designates a decorative closeout assembly that includes a gap hider 12. The gap hider 12 includes a U-shaped body portion 14 that is constructed from a fabric and includes a plurality of peripheral tabs 16. First and second inwardly-extending flaps 18, 20 extend inwardly and are operably coupled with a laterally-extending flexible tensioner 22 extending between the first and second inwardly-extending flaps 18, 20 and configured to maintain the U-shaped body portion 14 taut. A plurality of hooked barbs 24 extend from a bottom side 26 of the U-shaped body portion 14. An upper back support 30 includes a U-shaped peripheral channel 32 for receiving the plurality of hooked barbs 24.


With reference again to FIGS. 1 and 2, the decorative closeout assembly 10 is configured for use on a seating assembly 40 and may be used in any vehicle 42, such as a car, a truck, a van, etc. It is also contemplated that the concept set forth in this disclosure may be utilized in a front or forward position of the vehicle 42 as well as a rear or rearward position of the vehicle 42. The seating assembly 40, as illustrated, includes a seat base 44 that is positioned on rail slides 46 to allow fore and aft movement of the seating assembly 40 relative to the vehicle 42. A seat 48 is operably coupled with the seat base 44 and is movable relative thereto, as set forth in further detail below. In addition, a seatback 50 of the seating assembly 40 includes a lower lumbar region 52 and an upper thoracic region 54 as well as a head restraint 56. Each of the components of the seatback 50 may be configured for adjustability to properly support the weight of various occupants inside the vehicle 42. The decorative closeout assembly 10 is generally configured for use on the seating assembly 40. However, other industrial applications may also be applicable (office chairs, theater seating, etc.).


With reference now to FIGS. 3 and 4, the upper back support 30 is movable relative to an inner closeout panel 60. The inner closeout panel 60 maintains a relatively stationary configuration relative to a frame 62 of the seatback 50 while the upper back support 30 is configured to rotate relative to the inner closeout panel 60. As shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the upper back support 30 is movable between a rearward position (FIG. 3) and a forward position (FIG. 4). To maintain an aesthetic and decorative look of the seating assembly 40 as a whole, a decorative cover in the form of the gap hider 12 is provided between the upper back support 30 and the inner closeout panel 60.


With reference now to FIG. 5, the decorative cover or gap hider 12 includes a three-dimensional construction, but is generally configured from a flexible material that allows for multiple movements of the upper back support 30 relative to the inner closeout panel 60. The material may be vinyl, fabric, an elastomer, etc. As can be seen, in FIG. 5, each of the peripheral tabs 16 includes a connecting aperture 70 configured to receive a stake 72 that extends from the inner closeout panel 60. During assembly, the stakes 72 are heated and mushroomed to swell the end of each stake 72. This process results in a permanent coupling of the peripheral tabs 16 with the stakes 72, and consequently, the gap hider 12 with the inner closeout panel 60. As shown in FIG. 6, the gap hider 12 maintains a coupling with the inner closeout panel 60 on a back side of the inner closeout panel 60. The tensioner 22 extends between the first and second inwardly-extending flaps 18, 20 that extend from each side of the U-shaped body portion 14. The inwardly-extending flaps 18, 20 may be of the same material as the U-shaped body portion 14 of the gap hider 12, or may be of a different material attached to the U-shaped body portion 14. In addition, the tensioner 22 may be a non-flexible material or a flexible material that allows some flexure as the upper back support 30 moves between the rearward position and the forward position.


With reference now to FIG. 7, a front side 80 of the inner closeout panel 60 and the gap hider 12 provides a relatively seamless appearance with no apparent coupling between the inner closeout panel 60 and the gap hider 12. This is due to the fact that the coupling is on a back side 82 of the inner closeout panel 60.


With reference now to FIGS. 8 and 9, the upper back support 30 includes the peripheral channel 32 that is configured to receive the plurality of hooked barbs 24 that are disposed on a bottom 96 of the U-shaped body portion 14 of the gap hider 12. The peripheral tabs 16 extend from a top 94 of the gap hider 12. The peripheral channel 32 is generally U-shaped in configuration and aligned with the bottom 96 of the gap hider 12. During assembly, the U-shaped peripheral channel 32 of the upper back support 30 is aligned with the plurality of hooked barbs 24 that extend about the bottom 94 of the gap hider 12. The plurality of hooked barbs 24 are inserted into the U-shaped peripheral channel 32. Detents 98, which are disposed inside the U-shaped peripheral channel 32, act to retain the plurality of hooked barbs 24, thereby maintaining a constant connection of the gap hider 12 with the upper back support 30. Accordingly, the bottom 96 of the gap hider 12 will move with the upper back support 30 as the upper back support 30 rotates between the forward and rearward positions (FIGS. 3 and 4).


With reference now to FIGS. 10 and 11, the interaction of the gap hider 12 with the upper back support 30 and the inner closeout panel 60 can be appreciated. Notably, the inner closeout panel 60 and the interaction with the gap hider 12 is maintained at a constant angle relative to the seatback 50. However, the upper back support 30 is configured to adjust. As the upper back support 30 adjusts, the gap hider 12 is pulled forward by the hooked barbs 24. As the gap hider 12 is pulled forward, the gap hider 12 becomes more visible, but also protects interior componentry of the seating assembly 40 and maintains an aesthetically pleasing view to the consumer. This configuration and the flexible nature of the gap hider 12 allows for continued use over a long period of time without any damage to the inner closeout panel 60, the upper back support 30, or the gap hider 12.


It will be understood by one having ordinary skill in the art that construction of the described disclosure and other components is not limited to any specific material. Other exemplary embodiments of the disclosure disclosed herein may be formed from a wide variety of materials, unless described otherwise herein.


For purposes of this disclosure, the term “coupled” (in all of its forms, couple, coupling, coupled, etc.) generally means the joining of two components (electrical or mechanical) directly or indirectly to one another. Such joining may be stationary in nature or moveable in nature. Such joining may be achieved with the two components (electrical or mechanical) and any additional intermediate members being integrally formed as a single unitary body with one another or with the two components. Such joining may be permanent in nature or may be removable or releasable in nature unless otherwise stated.


It is also important to note that the construction and arrangement of the elements of the disclosure as shown in the exemplary embodiments is illustrative only. Although only a few embodiments of the present innovations have been described in detail in this disclosure, those skilled in the art who review this disclosure will readily appreciate that many modifications are possible (e.g., variations in sizes, dimensions, structures, shapes and proportions of the various elements, values of parameters, mounting arrangements, use of materials, colors, orientations, etc.) without materially departing from the novel teachings and advantages of the subject matter recited. For example, elements shown as integrally formed may be constructed of multiple parts or elements shown as multiple parts may be integrally formed, the operation of the interfaces may be reversed or otherwise varied, the length or width of the structures and/or members or connector or other elements of the system may be varied, the nature or number of adjustment positions provided between the elements may be varied. Claims
  • 1. A decorative closeout assembly comprising: a gap hider including: a U-shaped body portion constructed from a fabric and including a plurality of peripheral tabs;first and second inwardly-extending flaps extending inwardly and operably coupled with a laterally-extending flexible tensioner extending between the first and second inwardly-extending flaps and configured to maintain the U-shaped body portion taut; anda plurality of hooked barbs extending from a bottom side of the U-shaped body portion; andan upper back support including a U-shaped peripheral channel for receiving the plurality of hooked barbs.
  • 2. The decorative closeout assembly of claim 1, wherein the U-shaped peripheral channel includes detents to retain the plurality of hooked barbs.
  • 3. The decorative closeout assembly of claim 1, wherein each of the peripheral tabs includes a connecting aperture.
  • 4. The decorative closeout assembly of claim 3, further comprising: an inner closeout panel including a plurality of stakes for coupling with the connecting aperture of each peripheral tab.
  • 5. The decorative closeout assembly of claim 4, wherein the upper back support is rotatable away from the inner closeout panel.
  • 6. The decorative closeout assembly of claim 1, wherein the U-shaped body portion is fabric.
  • 7. The decorative closeout assembly of claim 1, wherein the U-shaped body portion is vinyl.
  • 8. A decorative closeout assembly comprising: a gap hider including: a U-shaped body portion constructed from a fabric and including a plurality of peripheral tabs, each of the peripheral tabs including a connecting aperture;first and second inwardly-extending flaps extending inwardly and operably coupled with a tensioner extending between the first and second inwardly-extending flaps; andan inner closeout panel including a plurality of stakes for coupling with a connecting aperture of each peripheral tab.
  • 9. The decorative closeout assembly of claim 8, wherein the plurality of stakes are inserted through the connecting apertures and mushroomed to retain the gap hider.
  • 10. The decorative closeout assembly of claim 9, wherein each of the peripheral tabs includes a connecting aperture.
  • 11. The decorative closeout assembly of claim 9, wherein the U-shaped body portion is fabric.
  • 12. The decorative closeout assembly of claim 9, wherein the U-shaped body portion is vinyl.
  • 13. The decorative closeout assembly of claim 1, further comprising: an upper back support including a U-shaped peripheral channel for receiving a plurality of hooked barbs.
  • 14. The decorative closeout assembly of claim 13, wherein the upper back support is rotatable away from the inner closeout panel.
  • 15. The decorative closeout assembly of claim 13, wherein the U-shaped peripheral channel includes detents to retain the plurality of hooked barbs.
  • 16. A decorative closeout assembly comprising: a gap hider including: a body portion including a plurality of peripheral tabs;first and second inwardly-extending flaps extending inwardly and operably coupled with a tensioner extending between the first and second inwardly-extending flaps; anda plurality of hooked barbs extending from a bottom side of the body portion; andan upper back support including a U-shaped peripheral channel for receiving the plurality of hooked barbs.
  • 17. The decorative closeout assembly of claim 16, further comprising: an inner closeout panel including a plurality of stakes for coupling with a connecting aperture of each peripheral tab.
  • 18. The decorative closeout assembly of claim 17, wherein the upper back support is rotatable away from the inner closeout panel.
  • 19. The decorative closeout assembly of claim 16, wherein the U-shaped peripheral channel includes detents to retain the plurality of hooked barbs.
