Description
FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The invention generally relates to the field of commercial fitness facilities and gymnasium operations. More specifically, the invention relates to dedicated workout spaces, systems of dedicated workout spaces within a commercial gymnasium or facility, and methods of arranging dedicated workout spaces within such gymnasiums or facilities.

DISCUSSION OF THE BACKGROUND

Within conventional commercial fitness facilities and gymnasium operations there exists workout spaces and equipment, but the equipment and spaces are shared between individuals. Considering the Covid-19 pandemic, individuals using these spaces should distance themselves from one another to minimize the spread of the virus. Unless social distancing measures are implemented, individuals may increase their likelihood of contracting the virus when sharing workout spaces. Additionally, notwithstanding Covid-19 distancing requirements, many individuals desire to have free access to fitness equipment and spaces within a gym without having to compete for and/or share the equipment and spaces.

Many conventional commercial facilities and gymnasium operations, however, lack social distancing measures and require that equipment and spaces be shared. As a result, people workout near each other, which increases the likelihood they will contract the Covid-19 virus. Sharing equipment also affects an individual's workout experience since equipment may not be available for use if another individual is using it and thus makes it unpredictable when equipment will be available. The additional time individuals spend waiting for equipment to be available also means that they are at the gym for a longer time. This additional time not only wastes time but exacerbates the risk of contracting the virus since individuals are near each other for longer periods of time.

Therefore, it is desirable to provide an arrangement of fitness equipment/dedicated workout space within commercial gyms that provides social distancing between individuals, minimizes the time spent at the gym, and that improves the quality of an individual's workout experience.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The present invention advantageously provides dedicated workout spaces, each workout space having both fitness equipment and free space, allowing an individual to perform a variety of exercises and/or workout routines within the space. Additionally, the present invention implements systems of dedicated workout spaces within a commercial gymnasium or other commercial facility, allowing for social distancing between individuals, and minimizing the time spent working out because individuals do not need to compete for equipment time. Thus, the present invention improves the quality of individuals' workout experience.

Specifically, embodiments of the present invention provide dedicated workout spaces within a facility, each dedicated workout space comprising: (i) a floor area; (ii) a plurality of fitness equipment located at or near a perimeter of the floor area; and (iii) a clear floor space located within the floor area, the clear floor space having no fitness equipment in it, the plurality of fitness equipment comprising at least one piece of cardio equipment, at least one piece of strength training equipment, and at least one piece of weightlifting equipment, the dedicated workout space thereby allowing a user to work out without moving to another floor area within the facility and without sharing the plurality of fitness equipment with other users

Additionally, embodiments of the present invention provide systems of dedicated workout spaces, each system generally comprising: (i) a first workout space comprising (a) a first floor area; (b) a first plurality of fitness equipment located at or near a perimeter of the first floor area, where the first plurality of fitness equipment within the first floor area is arranged in a first layout; (c) a first clear floor space located within the first floor area, the first clear space having no fitness equipment in it; (ii) two or more other dedicated workout spaces in other areas of the facility adjacent to the first dedicated workout space or at least one of the two or more other dedicated workout spaces, each of the two or more other dedicated workout spaces comprising: (a) a second floor area; (b) a second plurality of fitness equipment located at or near a perimeter of the second floor area, where the second plurality of fitness equipment within the second floor area is arranged in a second layout; (c) a second clear floor space located within the second floor area, the second clear space having no fitness equipment in it. In some embodiments, the first and second layouts may be the same. In other embodiments, the first and second layouts may be mirror images of each other about an x axis, mirror images about a y axis, or a combination thereof.

In alternative embodiments, the first and second dedicated workout spaces may share a portion of fitness equipment common to the first plurality and second plurality of fitness equipment at or near adjacent perimeter edges of the first floor area and the second floor area.

It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a system of dedicated workout spaces in a facility, to maximize enjoyment of workout sessions.

It is also an object of the invention to provide equipment within the dedicated space that is not shared during use of the space.

It is also an object of the invention to provide distance between individuals while multiple dedicated spaces are in use.

It is also an object of the invention to shorten the length of time that individuals spend at the gymnasium or other fitness facility.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a workout that is not interrupted during use.

It is to be understood that both the foregoing general description and the following detailed description are exemplary, but not restrictive, of the invention. A more complete understanding of the arrangement of fitness equipment within a dedicated space and the methods disclosed herein will be afforded to those skilled in the art.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

Reference will now be made in detail to the preferred embodiments of the invention, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings. While the invention will be described in conjunction with the preferred embodiments, it should be understood that they are not intended to limit the invention to these embodiments. On the contrary, the invention is intended to cover alternatives, modifications, and equivalents that may be included within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims. Furthermore, in the following detailed description of the present invention, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the invention. However, it will readily be apparent to one skilled in the art that the present invention may be practiced without these specific details.

Embodiments of the present invention advantageously provide dedicated workout spaces within a facility to persons who desire to socially distance from other individuals and/or desire a better workout experience. Each dedicated workout space is designed for single person use such that the person may move within the dedicated workout space and use the fitness equipment therein without interruption, concern of coming into close proximity to other individuals in the space, and the need to clean each piece of fitness equipment in between each use. Although designed for single person use, a dedicated workout space may also be used by two or more persons, especially two or more persons who are family members or close personal friends, and with whom the person is not concerned about close contact with or the sharing of fitness equipment.

Typical embodiments of a dedicated workout space within a facility comprise: (i) a floor area; (ii) a plurality of fitness equipment located at or near a perimeter of the floor area; (iii) a clear floor space located within the floor area, the clear floor space having no fitness equipment in it, the plurality of fitness equipment comprising at least one piece of cardio equipment, at least one piece of strength training equipment, and at least one piece of weightlifting equipment, the dedicated workout space providing for a user to work out without moving to another floor area within the facility and without sharing the plurality of fitness equipment with other users.

Cardio equipment may include, but is not limited to a treadmill, a Stairmaster®, a manual treadmill, an elliptical trainer, a rowing machine, a vertical climbing machine, a stationary bike, and a recumbent bike. Weightlifting equipment may include, but is not limited to barbells, iron plates, free weights, bumper weights, dumbbells, a power rack, a squat rack, a flat bench, an adjustable bench, and an incline bench. Strength equipment includes, but is not limited to kettlebells, medicine balls, sandbags, slam balls, battle ropes, a plyometric box, a climbing rope, a pull up structure, a tire, a yoke, a sled, bands, gymnastic rings, and an abdominal mat.

Exemplary Dedicated Workout Space

Referring first to FIG. 1, typical embodiments of a dedicated workout space 100 within a facility typically comprise: a floor area 110, a plurality of fitness equipment located at or near a perimeter of the floor area 110, including but not limited to a (i) a treadmill 101; (ii) squat rack with pull up structure 102; (iii) flat bench 103; (iv) rowing machine 104; (v) bumper weight set with storage 105; (vi) plyometric box 106; (vii) stationary bike 107; and (viii) pull up structure 108. The dedicated workout space 100 also comprises a clear floor space 109, which provides the user with space for warm up and cool down exercises, stretching, yoga, gymnastic movements, etc.

The dedicated workout space 100 may be square or rectangular in shape and may comprise between approximately 80 sq. ft. and 256 sq. ft., and may have dimensions (length and width) between 8′ and 15′ (e.g., 8′×10′, 9′×9′, 10′×10′, 10′×12′, 12′×15′, 14′×16′, 16′×16′, etc.)

The clear floor space 109 may be between 36 sq. ft. to 100 sq. ft. (e.g., 6′×6′, 6′-x 7.5′, 7′×8.75′, 7′×8.25′, 8′×8′, 8.5′×10′, 10′×10′, etc.). Although the clear floor space 109 does not contain fitness equipment, it may, in certain embodiments comprise one or more of a floor mat, yoga mat, and/or other floor covering or partial floor covering. The clear floor space may be located at or near the center of the floor area 110, or it may be located off center, at or near to one or two sides of the perimeter of the floor area 110.

Although there are eight pieces of fitness equipment in the embodiment in FIG. 1, the number of pieces of fitness equipment in a dedicated workout space may range between three pieces of fitness equipment and twelve pieces of fitness equipment.

Dedicated workout spaces need not be delineated with markings on the floor, but in some embodiments may be marked with tape, chalk, paint or other permanent or semi-permanent markings such that users are clear as to the boundaries of their dedicated workout spaces.

Exemplary Systems of Dedicated Workout Spaces

Systems of dedicated workout spaces generally comprise: (i) a first workout space comprising (a) a first floor area; (b) a first plurality of fitness equipment located at or near a perimeter of the first floor area, where the first plurality of fitness equipment within the first floor area is arranged in a first layout; and (c) a first clear floor space located within the first floor area, the first clear space having no fitness equipment in it; (ii) two or more other dedicated workout spaces in other areas of the facility adjacent to the first dedicated workout space or at least one of the two or more other dedicated workout spaces, each of the two or more other dedicated workout spaces comprising: (a) a second floor area; (b) a second plurality of fitness equipment located at or near a perimeter of the second floor area, where the second plurality of fitness equipment within the second floor area is arranged in a second layout; and (c) a second clear floor space located within the second floor area, the second clear space having no fitness equipment in it. In some embodiments, the first and second layouts may be the same. In other embodiments, the first and second layouts may be mirror images of each other about an x axis, mirror images about a y axis, or a combination thereof.

In alternative embodiments, the first and second dedicated workout spaces may share a portion of fitness equipment common to the first and second pluralities of fitness equipment at or near adjacent perimeter edges of the first and second floor areas.

Referring now to FIG. 2, therein is shown a system of dedicated workout spaces 200 comprising a first dedicated workout space 210, a second dedicated workout space 220, a third dedicated workout space 230 and a fourth dedicated workout space 240. Each of the first, second, third and fourth dedicated workout spaces 210-240 include fitness equipment (see e.g., treadmill 101, squat rack with pull up structure 102, flat bench 103, rowing machine 104, bumper weight set with storage 105, plyometric box 106, stationary bike 107 and pullup structure 108 of FIG. 1) located at or near a perimeter of the dedicated workout spaces 210-240, and a clear floor space (see e.g., clear floor space 109 of FIG. 1).

Although the embodiment of FIG. 2 shows the fitness equipment in each of the dedicated workout spaces to be the same fitness equipment, the fitness equipment in each of the dedicated workout spaces may be different in type of equipment and number of pieces of equipment. For example, one dedicated workout space may comprise a treadmill, rowing machine and stationary bike for cardio equipment, and another dedicated workout space may contain an elliptical trainer, and a vertical climbing machine for the cardio equipment. Likewise, the weightlifting equipment and strength training equipment may also vary in type of equipment and number of pieces from dedicated workspace to dedicated workspace.

In the embodiment of FIG. 2, the first and second dedicated workout spaces 210, 220 are separated from the third and fourth dedicated workout spaces 230, 240 by a distance d1. The distance d1 may range between 0 (i.e., no space and the dedicated workout spaces abut one another) and six feet (to allow for social distancing). Likewise, the first and third dedicated workout spaces 210, 230 are separated from the second and fourth dedicated workout spaces 220, 240 by a distance d2. The distance d2 may also range between 0 and six feet.

In some embodiments d1 and d2 are the same distance, but in other embodiments d1 and d2 may be different distances.

Typically, and although not shown in FIG. 2, the distance between dedicated workout spaces 210 and 230 will be the same as the distance between dedicated workout spaces 220 and 240, but in some embodiments, these distances may be different. Similarly, the distance between dedicated workout spaces 210 and 220 will typically be the same as the distance between dedicated workout spaces 230 and 240, but in some embodiments, these distances may be different as well.

Although the embodiment of FIG. 2 shows four dedicated workout spaces, the number of dedicated workout spaces in a facility may vary from as few as two dedicated workout spaces to as many as 100 or more, depending on the size of the facility, the size of the dedicated workout spaces and the distance between dedicated workout spaces. The dedicated workout spaces may be in a single row or in multiple rows, and the number of dedicated workout spaces in each row may be the same or may be different than adjacent rows. In some embodiments the size of the dedicated workout spaces (length and/or width) may vary from dedicated workout space to dedicated workout space.

FIG. 3 shows a system of dedicated workout spaces 300 comprising a first dedicated workout space 310, a second dedicated workout space 320, a third dedicate workout space 330 and a fourth dedicated workout space 340. Each of the first, second, third and fourth dedicated workout spaces 310-340 include fitness equipment (see e.g., treadmill 110, squat rack with pull up structure 102, flat bench 103, rowing machine 104, bumper weight set with storage 105, plyometric box 106, stationary bike 107 and pullup structure 108 of FIG. 1) located at or near a perimeter of the dedicated workout spaces 310-340, and a clear floor space (see e.g., clear floor space 109 of FIG. 1).

In the embodiment shown in FIG. 3, the fitness equipment in each of the dedicated workout spaces is the same, but dedicated workout space 330 is a mirror image about the x axis of dedicated workout space 310. Similarly, the fitness equipment in dedicated workout space 340 is a mirror image about the x axis of the fitness equipment in dedicated workout space 320. The pattern of fitness equipment in this system of dedicated workout spaces may be repeated for every two dedicated workout spaces (e.g., 6, 8, 10, 12 . . . spaces).

The advantages of the arrangement of equipment in the embodiment of FIG. 3 is that persons working out in dedicated workout spaces 310 and 330 will typically have their backs to one another, thereby furthering a goal of less social contact. This is also true for dedicated workout spaces 320 and 340. Additionally, while utilizing the fitness equipment in a dedicated space, a user will feel less like they are being watched by another user if they are working out with their backs to one another.

The description above related to FIG. 2 regarding the distances between dedicated workout spaces, and the number of dedicated workout spaces apply equally to the embodiment of FIG. 3.

Additionally, while the embodiment of FIG. 3 shows that the dedicated workout spaces 310-340 are aligned along both the x and y axes, in other embodiments, adjacent workout spaces may be offset (staggered) from each other. Specifically, each dedicated workout space may have a length “l” and a width “w.” If the adjacent dedicated workout spaces along the x axis are considered rows (e.g., dedicated workout spaces 310 and 320 form one row, and dedicated workout spaces 330 and 340 form a second row), then row 310, 320 may be offset along the x axis from row 330, 340 a distance equal to as much as one-half of length “l.” Every row may be offset from an adjacent row the same distance or a different distance.

Similarly, if the adjacent dedicated workout spaces along the y axis are considered columns (e.g., dedicated workout spaces 310 and 330 form one column, and dedicated workout spaces 320 and 340 form a second column) then column 320, 340 may be offset from column 310, 330 a distance equal to as much as one half of width “w.” Every column may be offset from an adjacent column the same distance or a different distance.

Although the embodiment of FIG. 3 shows only two dedicated workout spaces in each row, rows may have any number of dedicated workout spaces and may be offset regardless of the number of dedicated workout spaces in a row. Likewise, although the embodiment of FIG. 3 shows only two dedicated workout spaces in each column, columns may have any number of dedicated workout spaces and may be offset regardless of the number of dedicated workout spaces in a column. This offsetting of dedicated workout spaces may also account for a facility that is not square or rectangular in shape.

Turning now to FIG. 4, another exemplary embodiment of a system of dedicated workout spaces is shown comprising four dedicated workouts spaces: a first dedicated workout space 410, a second dedicated workout space 420, a third dedicated workout space 430 and a fourth dedicated workout space 440. In the embodiment of FIG. 4, the fitness equipment in each of the dedicated workout spaces is the same (see e.g., treadmill 110, squat rack with pull up structure 102, flat bench 103, rowing machine 104, bumper weight set with storage 105, plyometric box 106, stationary bike 107 and pullup structure 108 of FIG. 1). However, the arrangement of the fitness equipment is “mirrored” in both the x and the y dimensions.

Specifically, the fitness equipment in the second dedicated workout space 420 is the same as the fitness equipment in the first dedicated workout space 410, but the arrangement of the fitness equipment in the second dedicated workout space 420 is a mirror image about the y axis of the dedicated fitness equipment in dedicated workout space 410. The arrangement of the fitness equipment in the third dedicated workout space 430 is a mirror image about the x axis of the fitness equipment in the first dedicated workout space 410. The arrangement of fitness equipment in the fourth dedicated workout space 440 is a mirror image about the x axis of the fitness equipment in in the second dedicate workout space 420, a mirror image about the y axis of the fitness equipment in the third dedicated workout space 430, and a mirror image about both the x and y axes of the fitness equipment in the first workout space 410.

The description above related to FIG. 2 regarding the distances between dedicated workout spaces, and the number of dedicated workout spaces apply equally to the embodiment of FIG. 4. Additionally, the description above related to FIG. 3 regarding offsetting of dedicated workout spaces applies to FIG. 4 as well.

The advantages of the arrangement of fitness equipment of FIG. 4 include the ability for individuals to follow a set exercise routine with one or more other individuals (e.g., family, or close friends) allowing individuals to encourage each other during their exercise regimens, and/or enabling individuals to compete with each other during their workouts. Further, and at the same time, the arrangement of fitness equipment of FIG. 4 provides space for individuals with health concerns to exercise away from each other while still interacting with each other.

In FIG. 5 is shown a system of dedicated workout spaces 500 comprising a first dedicated workout space 510, a second dedicated workout space 520, a third dedicate workout space 530 and a fourth dedicated workout space 540. Each of the second and third dedicated workout spaces 520, 530 include (i) a treadmill 501, (ii) a squat rack with pull up structure 502, (iii) a flat bench 503, (iv) a rowing machine 504, (v) a bumper weight set with storage 505; (vi) a plyometric box 506, (vii) a stationary bike 507, pullup structure 508, and a clear floor space 509. Each of the first and fourth dedicated workout spaces 510, 540 include the same fitness equipment as the second and third dedicated workout spaces 520, 530 except that in lieu of rowing machine 504, they include an elliptical trainer, and in lieu of a bumper weight set with storage 505, they include medicine balls 511.

The arrangement of fitness equipment in the first and fourth dedicated workout spaces 510 and 540 are the same, and the arrangement of fitness equipment in the second and third dedicated workout spaces 520, 530 are the same.

The description above related to FIG. 2 regarding the distances between dedicated workout spaces, and the number of dedicated workout spaces apply equally to the embodiment of FIG. 5. Additionally, the description above related to FIG. 3 regarding offsetting of dedicated workout spaces applies equally to the embodiment of FIG. 5 as well.

Some advantages of the arrangement of equipment in FIG. 5 include the ability for couples or partners to work out next to each other, the ability for individuals with different training programs to exercise next to each other, and (iii) the ability for individuals with different sport interests to choose and focus their exercise on what may be most important to their routine. For example, if a couple wants to ride exercise bikes together but one does not want to use the rowing machine or elliptical that day, the embodiment of FIG. 5, allows them to do so.

FIG. 6 shows yet another embodiment of a system of dedicated workout spaces 600. In the embodiment of FIG. 6, first and second dedicated workout spaces 610, 620 each comprise the same but separate fitness equipment, except that they share a rowing machine 604 and a bumper weight set with storage 605. These shared pieces of equipment are typically located in an area 615 between the first and second dedicated workout spaces 610, 620. However, as shown in the embodiment of FIG. 6, the fitness equipment may also extend into and/or overlap the dedicated workout spaces 610, 620.

Similarly, the third and fourth dedicated workout spaces 630, 640 each comprise the same fitness but separate equipment but, share a stationary bike 607 and medicine balls 611. These shared pieces of fitness equipment are typically located in an area 635 between the first and second dedicated workout spaces 630, 640. However, as shown in the embodiment of FIG. 6, and like the rowing machine 604 and bumper weight set with storage 605 related to dedicated workout spaces 610, 620, the stationary bike 607 and medicine balls 611 may also extend into and/or overlap the dedicated workout spaces 630, 640.

Any type of fitness equipment may be shared, but typically, only two to four pieces of equipment will be shared between two adjacent dedicated workout spaces. In some embodiments, a dedicated workout space may share fitness equipment with an adjacent dedicated workout space on one side of the dedicated workout space and also share fitness equipment with another adjacent dedicated workout space on an opposite side of the dedicated workout space.

Advantages of the embodiment of the system of dedicated workout spaces of FIG. 6 are that the system reduces the number of pieces (and therefore the cost) of fitness equipment in the facility and also makes efficient use of the floor space available within the facility while still reducing the competition between users for equipment time and allowing for significant ability to social distance.

Exemplary Method of Arranging Dedicated Workout Spaces

An exemplary method 700 of arranging dedicated workout spaces is shown in FIG. 7. The method begins at 701 by locating a first dedicated workout space in one area of a facility. At step 702, a first plurality of fitness equipment is arranged in a first layout. At step 703, one or more other dedicated workout spaces are located in other areas of the facility. At 704, a decision is made as to whether the first layout and the layouts for other dedicated workout spaces will be the same. If yes (the layouts will be the same) then at step 705, the plurality of fitness equipment in other dedicated workout spaces is arranged in a second layout that is the same as the first layout. If no (the layouts will be different) then at step 706, a second plurality of fitness equipment is arranged in a second layout that is (i) a mirror image of the first layout about an x axis, a mirror image of the first layout about a y axis, or (iii) a combination of a mirror image of the first layout about both the x and y axes.

The first dedicated workout space may comprise: (i) a first floor area; (ii) a first plurality of fitness equipment located at or near the perimeter of the first floor area; and (iii) a first clear space located within the first floor area, the first clear space containing no fitness equipment in it.
