(a) a nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 1, 4, or 7; (b) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a polypeptide having the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:2, 5, or 8; (c) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a mature polypeptide having the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:3, 6, or 9; (d) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a polypeptide having at least about 70 percent identity to the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:3, 6, or 9, wherein said polypeptide retains defensin-like activity; (e) a nucleotide sequence that hybridizes under stringent conditions to a nucleotide sequence having a sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 1, 4, or 7, wherein said nucleotide sequence encodes a polypeptide that retains defensin-like activity; or (f) a nucleotide sequence consisting of a complement of any one of the nucleotide sequences in (a), (b), (c), (d), or (e).
- 3. The isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 1 wherein the nucleotide sequence is selected from the group consisting of:
(a) a nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 10; (b) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a polypeptide having the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 11; (c) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a mature polypeptide having the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 12; (d) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a polypeptide having at least about 70 percent identity to the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 12, wherein said polypeptide retains defensin-like activity; (e) a nucleotide sequence that hybridizes under stringent conditions to a nucleotide sequence having a sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 10, wherein said nucleotide sequence encodes a polypeptide that retains defensin-like activity; or (f) a nucleotide sequence consisting of a complement of any one of the nucleotide sequences in (a), (b), (c), (d), or (e).
- 4. The isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 1 wherein the nucleotide sequence is selected from the group consisting of:
(a) a nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 13 or 16; (b) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a polypeptide having the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:14 or 17; (c) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a mature polypeptide having the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:15 or 18; (d) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a polypeptide having at least about 70 percent identity to the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 15 or 18, wherein said polypeptide retains defensin-like activity; (e) a nucleotide sequence that hybridizes under stringent conditions to a nucleotide sequence having a sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 13 or 16, wherein said nucleotide sequence encodes a polypeptide that retains defensin-like activity; or (f) a nucleotide sequence consisting of a complement of any one of the nucleotide sequences in (a), (b), (c), (d), or (e).
- 5. The isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 1 wherein the nucleotide sequence is selected from the group consisting of:

- 6. The isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 1 wherein the nucleotide sequence is selected from the group consisting of:
(a) a nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:58, 61, 64, or 67; (b) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a polypeptide having the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:59, 62, 65, or 68; (c) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a mature polypeptide having the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:60, 63, 66, or 69; (d) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a polypeptide having at least about 70 percent identity to the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:60, 63, 66, or 69, wherein said polypeptide retains defensin-like activity; (e) a nucleotide sequence that hybridizes under stringent conditions to a nucleotide sequence having a sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:58, 61, 64, or 67, wherein said nucleotide sequence encodes a polypeptide that retains defensin-like activity; or (f) a nucleotide sequence consisting of a complement of any one of the nucleotide sequences in (a), (b), (c), (d), or (e).
- 7. The isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 1 wherein the nucleotide sequence is selected from the group consisting of:
(a) a nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:70 or 73; (b) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a polypeptide having the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:71 or 74; (c) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a mature polypeptide having the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:72 or 75; (d) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a polypeptide having at least about 70 percent identity to the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:72 or 75, wherein said polypeptide retains defensin-like activity; (e) a nucleotide sequence that hybridizes under stringent conditions to a nucleotide sequence having a sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:70 or 73, wherein said nucleotide sequence encodes a polypeptide that retains defensin-like activity; or (f) a nucleotide sequence consisting of a complement of any one of the nucleotide sequences in (a), (b), (c), (d), or (e).
- 8. The isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 1 wherein the nucleotide sequence is selected from the group consisting of:
(a) a nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:76 or 79; (b) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a polypeptide having the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:77 or 80; (c) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a mature polypeptide having the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:78 or 81; (d) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a polypeptide having at least about 70 percent identity to the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:78 or 81, wherein said polypeptide retains defensin-like activity; (e) a nucleotide sequence that hybridizes under stringent conditions to a nucleotide sequence having a sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:76 or 79, wherein said nucleotide sequence encodes a polypeptide that retains defensin-like activity; or (f) a nucleotide sequence consisting of a complement of any one of the nucleotide sequences in (a), (b), (c), (d), or (e).
- 9. The isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 1 wherein the nucleotide sequence is selected from the group consisting of:
(a) a nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:82 or 85; (b) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a polypeptide having the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:83 or 86; (c) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a mature polypeptide having the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:84 or 87; (d) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a polypeptide having at least about 70 percent identity to the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:84 or 87, wherein said polypeptide retains defensin-like activity; (e) a nucleotide sequence that hybridizes under stringent conditions to a nucleotide sequence having a sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:82 or 85 or, wherein said nucleotide sequence encodes a polypeptide that retains defensin-like activity; or (f) a nucleotide sequence consisting of a complement of any one of the nucleotide sequences in (a), (b), (c), (d), or (e).
- 10. The isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 1 wherein the nucleotide sequence is selected from the group consisting of:
(a) a nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:88; (b) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a polypeptide having the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:89; (c) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a mature polypeptide having the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:90; (d) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a polypeptide having at least about 70 percent identity to the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:90, wherein said polypeptide retains defensin-like activity; (e) a nucleotide sequence that hybridizes under stringent conditions to a nucleotide sequence having a sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:88, wherein said nucleotide sequence encodes a polypeptide that retains defensin-like activity; or (f) a nucleotide sequence consisting of a complement of any one of the nucleotide sequences in (a), (b), (c), (d), or (e).
- 11. The isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 1 wherein the nucleotide sequence is selected from the group consisting of:

- 12. The isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 1 wherein the nucleotide sequence is selected from the group consisting of:
