Claims
- 1. A method of determining a condition of a medical electrode system comprising the following steps:
- providing first and second defibrillator electrodes and an electrode interface in electrical contact with the first and second electrodes;
- providing a patient simulation circuit between, and in electrical communication with, the electrodes;
- generating a test signal;
- sending the test signal from the first electrode through the electrode interface to the second electrode;
- detecting a received signal across the electrodes at the patient simulation circuit; and
- analyzing the received signal to determine a condition of the medical electrode system.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the analyzing step comprises determining whether the received signal meets a predetermined standard.
- 3. The method of claim 2 further comprising the step of activating an indicator if the analyzing step determines that the received signal does not meet the predetermined standard.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the indicator is a light.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the electrode interface comprises a conductive gel applied to at least one electrode.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the test signal comprises a voltage pulse.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the providing step further comprises providing a flexible substrate, the electrode interface comprising a first conductor disposed on the substrate in electrical communication with the first electrode, a test pad disposed on the substrate, and a second conductor disposed on the substrate in electrical communication with the test pad, the method further comprising the step of placing the first electrode in electrical communication with the test pad before the test signal sending step.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the electrode interface further comprises a third conductor disposed on the substrate in electrical communication with the second electrode, a second test pad disposed on the substrate, and a fourth conductor disposed on the substrate in electrical communication with the second test pad, the method further comprising the step of placing the second electrode in electrical communication with the second test pad before the test signal sending step.
- 9. The method of claim 1 further comprising the steps of providing a second electrode and sending the test signal from the electrode interface to the first and second electrodes, the received signal being detected at the first and second electrodes.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein the test signal is a simulated ECG signal.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the first and second electrodes are defibrillator electrodes, the test signal is an ECG waveform substantially similar to an ECG from a patient requiring a defibrillation shock, and the analyzing step comprises determining whether or not to deliver a defibrillation shock to the first and second electrodes.
- 12. The method of claim 11 further comprising the step of activating an indicator if the analyzing step determines not to deliver a defibrillation shock to the first and second electrodes.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein the indicator is a light.
- 14. The method of claim 11 wherein the electrode interface comprises a conductive gel applied to at least one electrode.
- 15. The method of claim 13 wherein the providing step further comprises providing a flexible substrate, the electrode interface comprising a first conductor disposed on the substrate in electrical communication with the first electrode, a test pad disposed on the substrate, and a second conductor disposed on the substrate in electrical communication with the test pad, the method further comprising the step of placing the first electrode in electrical communication with the test pad before the test signal sending step.
- 16. The method of claim 15 wherein the electrode interface further comprises a third conductor disposed on the substrate in electrical communication with the second electrode, a second test pad disposed on the substrate, and a fourth conductor disposed on the substrate in electrical communication with the second test pad, the method further comprising the step of placing the second electrode in electrical communication with the second test pad before the test signal sending step.
- 17. A method of determining a condition of a medical electrode system prior to use comprising the following steps:
- providing a first electrode and a first electrode interface in electrical contact with the first electrode;
- providing a second electrode and a second electrode interface in electrical contact with the second electrode;
- generating a test signal;
- sending the test signal to the first and second electrodes;
- detecting a received signal across the first and second electrodes; and
- analyzing the received signal to determine a condition of the medical electrode system.
- 18. The method of claim 17 wherein the first and second electrodes are defibrillator electrodes, the method further comprising the step of providing a patient simulation circuit between, and in electrical communication with, the first and second electrode interfaces, the detecting step comprising detecting the received signal at the patient simulation circuit.
- 19. The method of claim 17 wherein the first and second electrodes are defibrillator electrodes, the test signal is an ECG waveform substantially similar to an ECG from a patient requiring a defibrillation shock, the sending step comprises sending the test signal to the first and second electrodes through the first and second electrode interfaces, and the analyzing step comprises determining whether or not to deliver a defibrillation shock to the first and second electrodes.
- 20. A method of determining a condition of a medical electrode system comprising the following steps:
- providing a first electrode and a first electrode interface in electrical contact with the first electrode, the first electrode interface comprising conductive gel in contact with the first electrode and a first test conductor in electrical contact with the conductive gel;
- providing a second electrode and a second electrode interface in electrical contact with the second electrode, the second electrode interface comprising conductive gel in contact with the second electrode and a second test conductor in electrical contact with the conductive gel;
- generating a test signal comprising a voltage pulse;
- sending the test signal to the first and second electrodes;
- detecting a received signal at the first and second test conductors; and
- analyzing the received signal to determine a condition of the medical electrode system.
- 21. A method of determining a condition of a medical electrode system comprising the following steps:
- providing a first electrode and a first electrode interface in electrical contact with the first electrode, the first electrode interface comprising conductive gel in contact with the first electrode and a first test conductor in electrical contact with the conductive gel;
- providing a second electrode and a second electrode interface in electrical contact with the second electrode, the second electrode interface comprising conductive gel in contact with the second electrode and a second test conductor in electrical contact with the conductive gel;
- generating a test signal comprising a simulated ECG signal;
- sending the test signal to the first and second electrodes through the first and second test conductors and the conductive gel contacting the first and second electrodes;
- detecting a received signal at the first and second test conductors; and
- analyzing the received signal to determine a condition of the medical electrode system.
