Claims
- 1. An impactor for a movable, deformable barrier simulating an automobile, comprising:
- an upright, solid backing support having a support face;
- a plurality of energy absorbing impact segments each protruding from said support face;
- each said segment having an outer impact face and each comprising a plurality of portions of honeycomb having different crush strength characterized by increasing crush strength of successive portions from said outer impact face to said support, wherein said honeycomb includes a plurality of cells axially oriented perpendicular to said support face and said outer impact face, wherein at least two of said segments have different crush characteristics; and
- structural venting allowing airflow from said outer face to the successive portions when said portions are successively crushed.
- 2. The impactor in claim 1 including air venting from said honeycomb portions out of said barrier.
- 3. An impactor for a movable, deformable barrier simulating an automobile, comprising:
- an upright, solid backing support having a support face;
- a plurality of energy absorbing impact segments each protruding from said support face;
- each said segment having an outer impact face and each comprising a plurality of portions of honeycomb having different crush strength characterized by increasing crush strength of successive portions between said outer impact face and said support, wherein said honeycomb includes a plurality of cells axially oriented perpendicular to said support face and said outer impact face, at least two of said segments having different crush characteristics; and
- structural venting allowing airflow from said successive portions and said support when said portions are successively crushed.
- 4. The impactor in claim 3 wherein said honeycomb is of aluminum.
- 5. An impactor for a movable, deformable barrier simulating an automobile, comprising:
- an upright, solid backing support having a support surface;
- a plurality of energy absorbing impact segments each protruding from said support surface, wherein each of said segments has an outer impact face and includes a plurality of honeycomb cells axially oriented in parallel to one another and perpendicular to said outer impact face and said support surface, each segment having a resistance to crushing that increases from said outer impact face to said support surface, at least two of said segments having different crush characteristics; and
- structural venting allowing air flowing through said honeycomb cells from said outer impact face to exit said honeycomb cells in a location spaced apart from said outer impact face.
- 6. The impactor as defined in claim 5, wherein said structural venting allows the air flowing through said honeycomb cells to exit said honeycomb cells in a location proximate said support.
- 7. The impactor as defined in claim 5, wherein at least one of said segments includes a plurality of layers each having different resistance to crushing.
- 8. The impactor as defined in claim 7, wherein each said layer includes a plurality of honeycomb cells all of which being axially oriented in parallel to one another and perpendicular to said support surface, wherein the honeycomb cells of different layers having differing characteristics so as to provide different resistance to crushing.
- 9. The impactor as defined in claim 8, wherein the honeycomb cells of different layers have different cell dimensions.
- 10. An impactor for a movable, deformable barrier simulating an automobile, comprising:
- an upright, solid backing support having a support surface; and
- a plurality of energy absorbing impact segments each protruding from said support surface, wherein each of said segments has an outer impact face and includes a plurality of honeycomb cells axially oriented in parallel to one another and perpendicular to said outer impact face and said support surface, each segment having a resistance to crushing that increases from said outer impact face to said support surface, at least two of said segments having different crush characteristics.
- 11. The impactor as defined in claim 10, wherein at least one of said segments includes a plurality of layers each having a different resistance to crushing.
- 12. The impactor as defined in claim 11, wherein each said layer includes a plurality of honeycomb cells all of which being axially oriented in parallel to one another and perpendicular to said support surface, wherein the honeycomb cells of different layers having differing characteristics so as to provide different resistances to crushing.
- 13. The impactor as defined in claim 12, wherein the honeycomb cells of different layers have different cell dimensions.
