Claims
- 1. An elongated support member for positioning between a load and a transversely concavely curved support surface, said member being adapted to uniformly support said load over the length of said member, comprising: a longitudinally extending peripherally closed outer member formed of a semi-rigid material capable of limited deformation under load and of substantial recovery after load removal; a resilient filler material substantially filling the interior of said outer member, said filler material being capable of limited deformation under load and of substantial recovery after load removal, said filler material comprising a continuous web of cellulosic material; and a hollow core member extending longitudinally of said support member, said filler material being wound on said core member prior to containment thereof within said outer member, said core member having substantially greater width than height in cross sectional configuration after containment in said outer member when said support member is in an unloaded state thereby having its greatest stiffness is a horizontal, transverse direction and assisting to place the portion of said filler material therebelow in tension when said support member is under load transverse to the axis of elongation of said support member.
- 2. The support member of claim 1 wherein said filler material and said outer member are sufficiently flexible that at least the outer member can vibrate under the influence of high velocity fluids exiting from nozzles in said support surface.
- 3. An elongated support member for positioning between a pallet or skid and a transversely concavely curved support track, said pallet or skid being adapted to receive a load thereon, said support member being adapted to uniformly support said pallet or skid and any load thereon over the length of said member, comprising: a longitudinally extending peripherally closed outer member formed of a semi-rigid material capable of limited deformation under load and of substantial recovery after load removal; a resilient filler material substantially filling the interior of said outer member, said filler material being capable of limited deformation under load and of substantial recovery after load removal, said filler material comprising a continuous web of cellulosic material; and a hollow core member extending longitudinally of said support member, said filler material being wound on said core member prior to containment thereof within said outer member, said core member having substantially greater width than height in cross sectional configuration after containment in said outer member when said support member is in an unloaded state thereby having its greatest stiffness in a horizontal, transverse direction and assisting to place the portion of said filler material therebelow in tension when said support member is under load transverse to the axis of elongation of said support member.
- 4. The support member of claim 3 wherein said filler material and said outer member are sufficiently flexible that at least said outer member can vibrate under the influence of high velocity fluids exiting from nozzles in said support track.
- 5. The support member of claim 3 wherein said outer member is initially formed with deformable end caps which if cut off can be resealed to said outer member to provide a hermetically sealed support member following containment of said core member and filler material therein.
- 6. The support member of claim 3 including flexible end caps hermetically sealed to said outer member.
- 7. An elongated support member for positioning between a load and a transversely concavely curved support surface, said member being capable of uniformly supporting said load over the length thereof and of substantially isolating said load from forces influencing the position of said support surface, comprising: a longitudinally extending peripherally closed outer member formed of a semi-rigid material capable of limited deformation under load and of substantial recovery after load removal, said outer member exhibiting when under load transverse to the axis of elongation of said support surface a lower portion convexly curved to conform generally to the curvature of said support surface and a generally flattened upper portion; a resilient filler material substantially filling the interior of said outer member, said filler material being capable of limited deformation under load and of substantial recovery after load removal, said filler material comprising a continuous web of cellulosic material; and a hollow core member extending longitudinally of said support member, said filler material being wound on said core member prior to containment thereof within said outer member, said core member having substantially greater width than height in cross sectional configuration after containment in said outer member when said support member is in an unloaded state thereby having its greatest stiffness in a horizontal, transverse direction and assisting to place the portion of said filler material therebelow in tension when said support member is under load transverse to the axis of elongation of said support member.
