Claims
- 1. An orthosis for a hand comprising:
- an insert having a semi-rigid stiffener deformable by application of manual force, said stiffener having first and second end plates joined to each other by a narrower intermediate portion, said stiffener being laminated between opposing sheets of pliable material bonded to each other and defining a contour of said insert, said stiffener being completely contained between said opposing sheets;
- a removable cover of launderable fabric generally fitted to said contour, said cover having an interior accessible through a zippered opening for receiving said insert, and a zipper attached to said cover for selectively opening and closing said opening, said insert being fully covered by said removable cover in an assembled condition of said orthosis; and
- at least three retaining straps spaced apart on said cover and extending transversely to a longitudinal axis of said stiffener for encircling knuckles, wrist and forearm respectively of a hand to which the orthosis is applied;
- wherein one of said end plates has a finger supporting portion of given width terminating in a forward edge and side portions projecting to width greater than the finger supporting portion width from opposite sides of said finger supporting portion in mutually opposite directions transversely to said longitudinal axis, each of said side portions being rearwardly spaced from said forward edge and individually bendable relative to said finger supporting portion for positioning as a separator between the thumb and the fingers of the hand, said insert including said side portions being symmetrical about said longitudinal axis such that said orthosis is ambidextrous for application to either a right or a left hand.
- 2. An orthosis for application to a joint of an anatomical limb, comprising:
- an insert having a semi-rigid stiffener deformable by application of manual force, said stiffener having first and second end plates joined to each other by a narrower intermediate portion, said plates and said intermediate portion being symmetrical about a longitudinal axis extending along said midportion and bisecting said plates and also symmetrical about a line transverse to and bisecting said midportion;
- said stiffener being laminated between opposing sheets of pliable material bonded to each other and defining a contour of said insert, said stiffener being completely contained between said opposing sheets;
- a removable cover of launderable fabric generally fitted to said contour, said cover having an interior accessible through a zippered opening for receiving said insert, and a zipper attached to said cover for selectively opening and closing said opening, said insert being fully covered by said removable cover in an assembled condition of said orthosis;
- both opposing sheets for said removable cover generally conforming to the contour of said stiffener, such that the orthosis is ambidextrous for use on either a right or a left limb; and
- a plurality of straps attached to said cover for encircling the limb to which the orthosis is to be applied, said straps being substantially symmetrically located relative to said line transverse to the midportion.
- 3. An orthosis comprising a semi-rigid insert having opposite end plates joined by a narrower midportion, said plates and said intermediate portion being symmetrical about a longitudinal axis extending along said midportion and bisecting said plates and also symmetrical about a midpoint of said midportion;
- a removable cover of launderable fabric for covering said insert, a plurality of straps secured to said cover for encircling the limb to which the orthosis is to be applied, said straps being substantially symmetrically located relative to said line transverse to the midportion;
- wherein one of said end plates has a finger supporting portion of given width terminating in a forward edge and side portions projecting to width greater than the finger supporting portion width limited to a location rearwardly spaced from said forward edge on each of opposite sides of said one of said end plates in mutually opposite directions transversely to said longitudinal axis, each of said side portions being individually bendable relative to said finger supporting portion for positioning as a separator between the thumb and the fingers of the hand, said side portions being symmetrical about said longitudinal axis such that said orthosis is ambidextrous for application to either a right or a left hand.
- 4. The orthosis of claim 3 wherein said plurality of straps comprises an odd number of said straps, a middle one of said straps being located at said midpoint.
