Claims
- 1. A polymeric composition having a controllable degradation rate in sunlight and air comprising (1) a polymer which is a member selected from the group consisting of polymer of an olefin having 2 to 3 carbon atoms and styrene polymers and (2) a two component additive system, the first component of said additive being selected from the group consisting of (a) salts of an organic carboxylic acid with a metal capable of existing in at least two valence states and (b) chelates of a metal capable of existing in at least two valence states with a beta diketone, and the second component of the additive being a benzotriazole of the formula: ##SPC3##
- wherein R.sub.11, R.sub.12, R.sub.13 and R.sub.14 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, aralkyl, aroyl and aryloxy groups, said additive system being present in an amount effective to decrease the time of degradation of the polymer under the influence of ultraviolet light, each of said components of the additive system being present in an amount sufficient that the mixture thereof is more effective to decrease the time of degradation of the polymer than a corresponding amount of either member of the two component additive system by itself.
- 2. A polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein the metal of the first component is selected from the group consisting of iron, cobalt, nickel, chromium, titanium, vanadium manganese, copper, zirconium and tin and when the first component is a chelate of a beta diketone the diketone is 2,4-pentanedione.
- 3. A polymeric composition according to claim 2 wherein the first component of the additive system is (a).
- 4. A polymeric composition according to claim 3 wherein the organic carboxylic acid is free of non hydrocarbon substitutents.
- 5. A polymeric composition according to claim 2 wherein the first component of the additive system is (b).
- 6. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the two component additive system is present in an amount of at least 1 ppm of the polymer.
- 7. A composition according to claim 6 wherein each component of the additive system is present in an amount of 5 to 95% of the additive system.
- 8. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the metal is iron.
- 9. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the metal is cobalt.
- 10. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the metal is titanium.
- 11. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the metal is zirconium.
- 12. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the polymer is polyethylene, the two component additive system is present in an amount of 0.001 - 10% of the total of polymer and additive system and each component of the additive system is present in an amount of 5 to 95% of the additive system.
- 13. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the polymer is polypropylene, the two component additive system is present in an amount of 0.001 - 10% of the total of polymer and additive system and each component of the additive system is present in an amount of 5 to 95% of the additive system.
- 14. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the polymer is polystyrene, the two component additive system is present in an amount of 1 ppm of the polymer up to 10% of the total of polymer and additive system and each component of the additive system is present in an amount of 5 to 95% of the additive system.
- 15. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the benzotriazole is 5-chlorobenzotriazole.
- 16. A composition according to claim 15 wherein the first component of the additive system is (b).
- 17. A composition according to claim 16 wherein (b) is a metal chelate of 2,4-pentanedione.
- 18. A composition according to claim 17 wherein (b) is ferrous pentanedione.
- 19. A composition according to claim 18 wherein the polymer is polyethylene.
- 20. A composition comprising a first component selected from the group consisting of (a) salts of an organic carboxylic acid with a metal capable of existing in at least two valence states and (b) chelates of a metal capable of existing in at least two valence states with a beta diketone, and a second component which is a benzotriazole of the formula: ##SPC4##
- and R.sub.11, R.sub.12, R.sub.13 and R.sub.14 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, aralkyl, aroyl and aryloxy groups, each of said components being present in an amount sufficient that the mixture thereof is more effective to decrease the time of degradation of a polymer of an olefin having 2 to 3 carbon atoms than a corresponding amount of either member of the two component additive system by itself.
- 21. A composition according to claim 20 wherein the metal of the first component is selected from the group consisting of iron, cobalt, nickel, chromium, titanium, vanadium, manganese, copper, zirconium and tin and when the first component is a chelate of a beta diketone, the diketone is 2,4-pentanedione.
- 22. A composition according to claim 21 wherein the first component is (a).
- 23. A composition according to claim 21 wherein the first component is (b).
- 24. A composition according to claim 20 wherein the metal is titanium.
- 25. A composition according to claim 20 wherein each component is present in an amount of 5 to 95% of the total of the two components.
