Claims
- 1. As a composition of matter, an environmentally degradable plastic composition comprising a polyolefin having dispersed therein at least one unsaturated wax material as a readily autoxidizable organic substance.
- 2. The invention of claim 1 wherein the degradable plastic composition comprises 50 to 99.9% by weight of the polyolefin and 50 to 0.1% by weight of the autoxidizable unsaturated wax material.
- 3. The invention of claim 1 wherein the degradable plastic composition comprises 99 to 95% by weight low-density polyethylene and 1 to 5% by weight candelilla wax.
- 4. The invention of claim 1 wherein the plastic composition also contains 0.001 to 0.05% by weight antioxidant based on the weight of the polyolefin.
- 5. The invention of claim 3 wherein the plastic composition also contains 0.001 to 0.05% by weight antioxidant based on the weight of the polyethylene.
- 6. The invention of claim 5 wherein the antioxidant is tetrakis[methylene(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyhydrocinnamate)]methane.
- 7. The invention of claim 1 wherein the degradable plastic composition also contains a blowing agent.
- 8. The invention of claim 1 wherein the polyolefin is a hydrocarbon polymer.
- 9. The invention of claim 8 wherein the hydrocarbon polymer is selected from polyethylene, polypropylene, poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) and polystyrene.
- 10. As an article of manufacture, a plastic body of predetermined form and comprising the composition of matter of claim 1.
- 11. The invention of claim 10 wherrein the plastic body comprises 50 to 99.9% by weight of the polyolefin and 50 to 0.1% by weight of the unsaturated wax.
- 12. The invention of claim 10 wherein the plastic body comprises 99 to 95% by weight low-density polyethylene and 1 to 5% by weight candelilla wax.
- 13. The invention of claim 10 wherein the article is a plastic secondary wrap for a container package.
- 14. The invention of claim 10 wherein the article is of a foamed or cellular plastic body.
- 15. The invention of claim 10 wherein the polyolefin is a hydrocarbon polymer.
- 16. The invention of claim 10 wherein the hydrocarbon polymer is selected from polyethylene, polypropylene, poly(4-methyl-1-pentene), and polystyrene.
- 17. A process for preparing an environmentally degradable plastic composition which comprises preparing a composition comprising a polyolefin having dispersed therein at least one unsaturated wax as a readily autoxidizable material and subsequently subjecting the prepared composition in the form of an article to an oxidizing environment to partially oxidize said composition.
- 18. The invention of claim 17 wherein 50 to 0.1% by weight of said autoxidizable unsaturated is dispersed in 50 to 99.9% of said polyolefin.
- 19. The invention of claim 17 wherein 1 to 5% by weight candelilla wax is dispersed in 99 to 95% by weight of low-density polyethylene.
- 20. The invention of claim 17 wherein 0.001 to 0.05% by weight antioxidant based on the weight of said polyolefin is incorporated in said composition.
- 21. The invention of claim 19 wherein 0.001 to 0.05% by weight antioxidant based on the weight of said low-density polyethylene is incorporated in said composition.
- 22. The invention of claim 21 wherein said antioxidant is tetrakis[methylene(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyhydrocinnamate)]methane.
- 23. The invention of claim 17 wherein a blowing agent is incorporated in said composition.
- 24. The invention of claim 17 wherein said hydrocarbon polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, polypropylene, poly(4-methyl-1-petene) and polystyrene.
- 25. A process for accelerating environmental degradation of an organic polymeric material comprising dispersing at least one unsaturated wax as a readily autoxidizable material in said organic polymeric material to form a composition and subsequently exposing said composition to the natural environment.
- 26. The invention of claim 25 wherein said organic polymeric material is a polyolefin.
- 27. The invention of claim 26 comprising the further steps of forming said composition into an article of predetermined form and partially oxidizing said composition of said article in an oxidizing environment prior to exposing said composition to the natural environment.
- 28. The invention of claim 26 wherein 50 to 0.1% of said unsaturated wax is dispersed in 50 to 99.9% by weight of said polyolefin.
- 29. The invention of claim 26 wherein 1 to 5% by weight of candelilla wax is dispersed in 99 to 95% by weight of low-density polyethylene.
- 30. The invention of claim 26 wherein 0.001 to 0.05% by weight antioxidant based on the weight of said polyolefin is incorporated in said composition.
- 31. The invention of claim 29 wherein 0.001 to 0.05% by weight antioxidant based on the weight of said low-density polyethylene is incorporated in said composition.
- 32. The invention of claim 31 wherein said antioxidant is tetrakis[methane(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyhydrocinnamate)]methane.
- 33. The invention of claim 26 wherein said polyolefin is selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, polypropylene, poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) and polystyrene.
