Claims
- 1. A composition useful as a paint remover, comprising: a carbonate, a dibasic ester and a mono-ester.
- 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the carbonate is an alkylene carbonate containing from 2 to 10 carbon atoms.
- 3. The composition of claim 1, wherein the carbonate is propylene carbonate or ethylene carbonate or both.
- 4. The composition of claim 1, wherein the carbonate is ethylene carbonate or propylene carbonate.
- 5. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a glycol ether.
- 6. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a glycol ether having up to 20 carbon atoms.
- 7. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a ketone.
- 8. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a ketone having up to 20 carbon atoms.
- 9. The composition of claim 1, further comprising an organic sulfur-containing compound.
- 10. The composition of claim 1, further comprising dimethyl sulfoxide.
- 11. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a thickener.
- 12. The composition of claim 1, wherein the mono-ester includes an ether group.
- 13. The composition of claim 1, wherein the mono-ester is ethyl-3-ethoxy-propionate.
- 14. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition contains from about 10 to about 50 percent by weight of the carbonate, from about 15 to about 45 percent by weight of the dibasic ester, and from about 15 to about 45 percent of the mono-ester.
- 15. The composition of claim 1, further comprising dimethyl sulfoxide and wherein the composition contains from about 10 to about 50 percent by weight of the carbonate, from about 15 to about 45 percent by weight of the dibasic ester, from about 15 to about 45 percent of the mono-ester and from 10 about to about 30 percent of the dimethyl sulfoxide.
- 16. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a sulfur-containing compound, a glycol ether and a ketone wherein the composition contains from about 10 to about 50 percent by weight of the carbonate, from about 15 to about 45 percent by weight of the dibasic ester, from about 15 to about 45 percent of the mono-ester, from about 10 about to about 30 percent of the a sulfur-containing compound, from about 5 to about 20 of the ketone, and from 5 percent to about 20 percent of the glycol ether.
- 17. A process for removing paint, comprising: applying a composition to a painted surface for a time and under conditions effective to cause blistering or bubbling of the paint, wherein the composition comprises a carbonate, a dibasic ester and a mono-ester.
- 18. The process of claim 17, wherein the carbonate is an alkylene carbonate containing from 2 to 10 carbon atoms.
- 19. The process of claim 17, wherein the alkylene carbonate is propylene carbonate or ethylene carbonate or both.
- 20. The process of claim 17, wherein the carbonate is ethylene carbonate or propylene carbonate.
- 21. The process of claim 17, wherein the composition further comprises a glycol ether.
- 22. The process of claim 17, wherein the composition further comprises a glycol ether having up to 20 carbon atoms.
- 23. The process of claim 17 wherein the composition further comprises a ketone.
- 24. The process of claim 17, wherein the composition further comprises a ketone having up to 20 carbon atoms.
- 25. The process of claim 17, wherein the composition further comprises an organic sulfur-containing compound.
- 26. The process of claim 17, wherein the composition further comprises dimethyl sulfoxide.
- 27. The process of claim 17, wherein the composition further comprises a thickener.
- 28. The process of claim 17, wherein the mono-ester includes an ether group.
- 29. The process of claim 17, wherein the mono-ester is ethyl-3-ethoxy-propionate.
- 30. The process of claim 17, wherein the composition contains from about 10 to about 50 percent by weight of the carbonate, from about 15 to about 45 percent by weight of the dibasic ester, and from about 15 to about 45 percent of the mono-ester.
- 31. The process of claim 17, wherein the composition further comprises dimethyl sulfoxide and wherein the composition contains from about 10 to about 50 percent by weight of the carbonate, from about 15 to about 45 percent by weight of the dibasic ester, from about 15 to about 45 percent of the mono-ester and from 10 about to about 30 percent of the dimethyl sulfoxide.
- 32. The process of claim 17, wherein the composition further comprises a sulfur-containing compound, a glycol ether and a ketone wherein the composition contains from about 10 to about 50 percent by weight of the carbonate, from about 15 to about 45 percent by weight of the dibasic ester, from about 15 to about 45 percent of the mono-ester, from about 10 about to about 30 percent of the a sulfur-containing compound, from about 5 to about 20 of the ketone, and from 5 percent to about 20 percent of the glycol ether.
- 33. A process for removing a coating from a surface, comprising:
providing a composition containing a carbonate, a dibasic ester and a mono-ester; adding a thickening agent to the composition and mixing the resulting composition to form a thickened composition; applying the thickened composition to a coated surface for a time sufficient and under conditions effective to separate at least a portion of the coating from the surface; and removing the coating and thickened composition from the surface.
- 34. A composition useful as a degreaser, comprising: a carbonate and a alkyl-substituted cyclo-alkane.
- 35. The composition of claim 34, wherein the carbonate is an alkylene carbonate containing from 2 to 10 carbon atoms.
- 36. The composition of claim 34, wherein the carbonate is propylene carbonate or ethylene carbonate or both.
- 37. The composition of claim 34, wherein the carbonate is ethylene carbonate or propylene carbonate.
- 38. The composition of claim 34, further comprising a glycol ether.
- 39. The composition of claim 34, further comprising a glycol ether having up to 20 carbon atoms.
- 40. The composition of claim 34, further comprising a mono-ester.
- 41. The composition of claim 40, wherein the mono-ester includes an ether group.
- 42. The composition of claim 34, further comprising a soy carbonate.
- 43. The composition of claim 34, further comprising an alkyl lactate.
- 44. The composition of claim 43, wherein the alkyl lactate is ethyl lactate.
- 45. The composition of claim 34, wherein the mono-ester is a alkyl acetate of an oxo alcohol.
- 46. The composition of claim 34, wherein the composition contains from about 0.1 to about 50 percent by weight of the carbonate, and from about 0.1 to about 50 percent by weight of the alkyl-substituted cyclo-alkane.
- 47. A method useful for removing grease from a substrate, comprising: applying a degreasing composition to a grease on a substrate in an amount and under conditions effective to remove at least a portion of the grease from the substrate, wherein the composition comprises a carbonate and a alkyl-substituted cyclo-alkane, and optionally a soy carbonate.
- 48. The method of claim 47, wherein the carbonate is an alkylene carbonate containing from 2 to 10 carbon atoms.
- 49. The method of claim 47, wherein the carbonate is propylene carbonate or ethylene carbonate or both.
- 50. The method of claim 47, wherein the carbonate is ethylene carbonate or propylene carbonate.
- 51. The method of claim 47, further comprising a glycol ether.
- 52. The method of claim 47, further comprising a glycol ether having up to 20 carbon atoms.
- 53. The method of claim 47, further comprising a mono-ester.
- 54. The method of claim 53, wherein the mono-ester includes an ether group.
- 55. The method of claim 47, wherein the soy carbonate is present.
- 56. The method of claim 47, further comprising an alkyl lactate.
- 57. The method of claim 56, wherein the alkyl lactate is ethyl lactate.
- 58. The method of claim 47, wherein the mono-ester is an alkyl acetate of an oxo alcohol.
- 59. The method of claim 47, wherein the composition contains from about 0.1 to about 50 percent by weight of the carbonate, and from about 0.1 to about 50 percent by weight of the alkyl-substituted cyclo-alkane.
- 60. The method of claim 47, wherein the composition contains from about 0.1 to about 50 percent by weight of the carbonate, from about 0.1 to about 50 percent by weight of the alkyl-substituted cyclo-alkane, and the soy carbonate is present and in an amount for from about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight.
- 61. A method of manufacturing a degreasing composition, comprising: combining a carbonate and a alkyl-substituted cyclo-alkane and optionally a soy carbonate.
- 62. The method of claim 61, wherein the carbonate is an alkylene carbonate containing from 2 to 10 carbon atoms.
- 63. The method of claim 61, wherein the carbonate is propylene carbonate or ethylene carbonate or both.
- 64. The method of claim 61, wherein the carbonate is ethylene carbonate or propylene carbonate.
- 65. The method of claim 61, further comprising a glycol ether.
- 66. The method of claim 61, further comprising a glycol ether having up to 20 carbon atoms.
- 67. The method of claim 61, further comprising a mono-ester.
- 68. The method of claim 67, wherein the mono-ester includes an ether group.
- 69. The method of claim 61, wherein the soy carbonate is present.
- 70. The method of claim 61, further comprising an alkyl lactate.
- 71. The method of claim 70, wherein the alkyl lactate is ethyl lactate.
- 72. The method of claim 61, wherein the mono-ester is an alkyl acetate of an oxo alcohol.
- 73. The method of claim 61, wherein the composition contains from about 0.1 to about 50 percent by weight of the carbonate, and from about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight of the alkyl-substituted cyclo-alkane.
- 74. The method of claim 61, wherein the composition contains from about 0.1 to about 50 percent by weight of the carbonate, from about 0.1 to about 50 percent by weight of the alkyl-substituted cyclo-alkane, and the soy carbonate is present and in an amount for from about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight.
