Claims
- 1. An apparatus for applying a liquid coating to a deicer composition, the apparatus comprising:
a screw conveyor having a housing, at least one screw with a plurality of flights, an inlet for uncoated deicer, an inlet for a liquid coating composition, and an outlet for deicer coated with the liquid coating composition; wherein the screw contains a major surface and a plurality of raised portions extending upward from the major surface.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the raised portions comprise areas of the major surface that have been bent upward away from surrounding portions of the major surface.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the raised portions comprise areas of the major surface along the perimeter of the major surface that have been partially severed from the surrounding portions of the major surface and reoriented to extend away from the surrounding portions.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising an opening in the screw adjacent to the raised portion.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the raised portions are integrally formed with the major surface.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the screw contains at least 10 raised portions.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein at least one of the raised portions has an exposed surface area on one side of at least 10 square inches.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the raised portions on each flight of the screw have an exposed surface area on at least one side of from 5 to 15 percent of the surface area of the flight.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the number of raised portions per flight is from 2 to 8.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the number of raised portions per flight is from 3 to 6.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the total surface area of the raised portions is at least 100 square inches.
- 12. A coated deicer composition formed using the screw conveyor of claim 1.
- 13. A screw conveyor for applying a liquid coating to a deicer composition, the apparatus comprising:
(i) a housing; (ii) an inlet for uncoated deicer, an inlet for a liquid coating composition, and an outlet for deicer coated with the liquid coating composition; and (iii) a screw positioned within the housing, the screw having a series of protrusions along its circumference extending away from the screw surface and aligned substantially along the axis of the screw.
- 14. The screw conveyor of claim 13, wherein the protrusions are formed by making cuts in the screw in the shape of the protrusion and bending the protrusions away from the surrounding surface of the screw.
- 15. The screw conveyor of claim 13, wherein the screw contains at least 12 protrusions.
- 16. The screw conveyor of claim 13, wherein the screw contains two or more flights with two or more protrusions.
- 17. A method of coating salt to be used as deicer, the method comprising:
providing a salt composition containing sodium chloride; providing a liquid deicer composition; providing a screw conveyor containing a screw having a major surface and a plurality of raised portions extending upward from the major surface. adding the salt composition and liquid deicer composition into the screw conveyor and combination through the conveyor to produce a coated salt deicer composition.
- 18. The method of claim 17, wherein the liquid deicer composition comprises, on a water free basis, at least:
from 1.0 to 70 percent by weight molasses solids; from 0.1 to 40 percent by weight magnesium chloride; and from 0 to 30 percent by weight of a corrosion inhibitor.
- 19. The method of claim 17, wherein the liquid deicer composition comprises less than 45 percent by weight molasses solids.
- 20. The method of claim 17, wherein the liquid deicer composition comprises, on a water free basis:
at least 0.5 percent by weight magnesium chloride; at least 0.5 percent by weight molasses solids; and at least 80 percent by weight sodium chloride.
- 21. A coated deicer composition formed using the screw conveyor of claim 16.
