Claims
- 1. A method for delivering a medicament to a nail plate or nail bed, comprising:
(1) providing a composition that contains a therapeutically effective amount of a medicament, said medicament being suitable for topical administration to a nail; (2) etching the surface of the nail; (3) applying the medicament to the surface of the nail.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein step (2) occurs simultaneously with step (3).
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the etching step (2) includes applying a chemical etching agent to the nail surface.
- 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the chemical etching agent is an inorganic or organic acid or salts thereof.
- 5. The method of claim 4, wherein the inorganic acid is phosphoric acid.
- 6. The method of claim 4, wherein the organic acid is carboxylic acid or tartaric acid.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the etching step (2) includes providing an etching instrument to mechanically alter the surface of the nail.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the etching instrument is a laser.
- 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the medicament is an antifungal medicament.
- 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the medicament is delivered to the nail bed transonychially and perionychially.
- 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the medicament comprises at least one of an etching agent, nail growth agent, nail hardening agent, nail softening agent, nail penetration enhancer, antimicrobial, antifungal, keratolytic agent or a bioadhesive agent.
- 12. The method of claim 1, wherein the medicament is in the form of a gel.
- 13. The method of claim 1, wherein the medicament is in the form of a liquid or a lacquer.
- 14. The method of claim 1, wherein the medicament is in the form of a bioadhesive strip attachable to the nail or nail area.
- 15. The method of claim 1, wherein the etching step increases the surface area of the etched surface at least 10%.
- 16. The method of claim 9, wherein the antifungal medicament is selected from the group consisting of miconazole nitrate, ketoconazole, itraconazole, fluconazole, econazole, terconazole, saperconazole, amorolfine, ciclopirox, oxiconazole, clotrimazole, terbinafine, butenafine, and naftifine.
- 17. The method of claim 1, further comprising filing the nail to reduce thickness and/or alter the contour of the nail.
- 18. A method of treating a fungal infection of the fingernail or toenail, comprising:
(1) providing a therapeutically effective amount of an antifungal medicament; (2) etching the surface of a nail; and (3) applying said antifungal medicament to the surface of the nail.
- 19. The method of claim 18, wherein step (2) occurs simultaneously with step (3).
- 20. The method of claim 18, wherein said etching step is performed by chemical treatment of the surface of the nail.
- 21. The method of claim 18, wherein said etching step is performed by treating the surface of the nail with an acid.
- 22. The method of claim 21, wherein said acid is an inorganic acid or an organic acid or salts thereof.
- 23. The method of claim 22, wherein the inorganic acid is a phosphoric acid.
- 24. The method of claim 22, wherein the organic acid is a carboxylic acid or a tartaric acid.
- 25. The method of claim 18, wherein said etching step is performed mechanically.
- 26. The method of claim 18, wherein said medicament comprises at least one of an etching agent, nail growth agent, nail hardening agent, nail softening agent, nail penetration enhancer, keratolytic agent or a bioadhesive agent.
- 27. The method of claim 18, wherein the antifingal medicament is selected from the group consisting of miconazole nitrate, ketoconazole, itraconazole, fluconazole, econazole, terconazole, saperconazole, amorolfine, ciclopirox, oxiconazole, clotrimazole, terbinafine, butenafine, and naftifine.
- 28. A nail drug delivery composition, comprising:
an etching agent; and a nail medicament; wherein said etching agent being present in an amount suitable to increase the surface area of the nail by at least 10%.
- 29. The composition of claim 28, further comprising at least one of a bioadhesive agent, nail penetration enhancer, or a keratolytic altering agent.
- 30. The composition of claim 28, further comprising at least one of an etching agent, nail growth agent, nail hardening agent, nail softening agent, nail penetration enhancer, keratolytic agent or a bioadhesive agent.
- 31. The composition of claim 28, wherein said etching agent is an inorganic acid or an organic acid or salts thereof.
- 32. The composition of claim 31, wherein said inorganic acid is a phosphoric acid.
- 33. The composition of claim 31, wherein said organic acid is a carboxylic acid or a tartaric acid.
- 34. The composition of claim 28, wherein the medicament is an antifungal compound.
- 35. The composition of claim 34, wherein the antifungal compound is selected from the group consisting of miconazole nitrate, ketoconazole, itraconazole, fluconazole, econazole, terconazole, saperconazole, amorolfine, ciclopirox, oxiconazole, clotrimazole, terbinafine, butenafine, and naftifine.
- 36. A multi-layer, bioadhesive nail medicament delivery system, comprising:
a matrix layer that
comprises a therapeutically effective amount of a nail medicament, communicates with the surface of the nail, and comprises an etching agent in an amount sufficient to increase the surface of the nail at least 10%; and a backing layer.
- 37. The nail medicament delivery system of claim 36, wherein the backing layer is adapted to ensure unidirectional flow of said medicament.
- 38. The nail medicament delivery system of claim 37, the system being in the form of a bandage or dressing.
- 39. The nail medicament delivery system of claim 37, wherein the backing layer is part of an adhesive strip, and the matrix layer is in the form of a flexible pad that communicates with the strip.
- 40. The nail medicament delivery system of claim 37, wherein the matrix layer is in turn composed of multiple layers, having an etching layer that comprises an etching agent and a bioadhesive layer.
- 41. The nail medicament delivery system of claim 36, wherein said etching agent is an inorganic acid or an organic acid or salts thereof.
- 42. A method of applying a false nail to a natural nail, comprising:
etching the surface of the nail, applying false fingernail material to the nail after the etching step.
- 43. The method of claim 42, wherein the false nail is an acrylic material.
- 44. The method of claim 42, wherein the nail is a fingernail and/or a toenail.
- 45. The method of claim 42, wherein the false fingernail material comprises at least one medicaments.
- 46. The method of claim 45, wherein the medicament is an antifungal agent, nail growth agent, nail hardening agent, nail softening agent, nail penetration enhancer, antimicrobial agent, keratolytic agent, bioadhesive agent.
- 47. The method of claim 42, wherein, after the etching step, an antifungal medicament is applied prior to the false nail material.
