Claims
- 1. A dense, self-sintered composite material comprising:
- (a) a silicon carbide matrix, and
- (b) between 2 and 30 percent by total material weight of carbonized carbon-bonded graphite dispersed in said matrix,
- the silicon carbide having an average grain size between about 2 and about 15 .mu.m, the average grain size of the graphite being at least 10 .mu.m and greater than the average grain size of the silicon carbide, and the composite material having a theoretical density of at least 80 percent as determined by the rule of mixtures for a composite material.
- 2. The composite material according to claim 1, further comprising:
- (c) a sintering aid.
- 3. The composite material according to claim 2, wherein said sintering aid is present in an amount ranging from 0.1 to 15 percent by total material weight.
- 4. The composite material according to claim 3, wherein said sintering aid is selected from the group consisting of boron, aluminum, beryllium, carbon, compounds thereof, and mixtures thereof.
- 5. The composite material according to claim 4, wherein said sintering aid comprises boron carbide.
- 6. The composite material according to claim 4, wherein said sintering aid comprises free carbon.
- 7. A dense, self-sintered composite material comprising:
- (a) a silicon carbide matrix, and
- (b) between 2 and 30 percent by total material weight of carbon-graphite dispersed in said matrix,
- the silicon carbide having an average grain size between about 2 and about 15 .mu.m, the average grain size of the carbon-graphite being at least 10 .mu.m and greater than the average grain size of the silicon carbide, and the composite material having a theoretical density of at least 80 percent as determined by the rule of mixtures for a composite material.
- 8. The composite material according to claim 7, further comprising:
- (c) a sintering aid.
- 9. The composite material according to claim 8, wherein said sintering aid is present in an amount ranging from 0.1 to 15 percent by total material weight.
- 10. The composite material according to claim 9, wherein said sintering aid is selected from the group consisting of boron, aluminum, beryllium, carbon, compounds thereof, and mixtures thereof.
- 11. The composite material according to claim 10, wherein said sintering aid comprises boron carbide.
- 12. The composite material according to claim 10, wherein said sintering aid comprises free carbon.
