Claims
- 1. A method of treating or preventing dentinal sensitivity in a tooth of an individual in need of said treatment or prevention, which method comprises applying a composition comprising a guanidiniuni alkaline salt or free base, a calcium salt which is poorly soluble in water, and an orally acceptable carrier wherein the pH of the composition ranges from about 7.5 to about 9.5 to tooth surfaces exposed by gingival recession or tooth areas that have experienced loss of enamel or cementum.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the composition is selected from the group consisting of a dental product, a food product, and a chewing gum.
- 3. The method according to claim 1, wherein the composition is a slurry or paste.
- 4. A method of plugging dentinal tubules, which method comprises applying a composition comprising an arginine salt and calcium carbonate, wherein a pH of the composition ranges from about 7.5 to about 9.5 to a tooth where tubule plugging is desired.
- 5. The method according to claim 4, wherein the tubules have been exposed following scaling and root planing of the teeth during dental hygiene or periodontal treatment.
- 6. The method according to claim 4, wherein tubules are plugged to enable proper placement of a dental restoration.
- 7. The method according to claim 6, wherein the dental restoration is selected from the group consisting of a non-leaking cavity liner, a dental filling, and a crown.
- 8. A method of treating a carious lesion in an individual in need of said treatment, which method comprises administering a composition comprising an arginine salt and calcium carbonate, wherein a pH of the composition is above 9.0 and less than or equal to about 9.5, to the carious lesion.
- 9. The method according to claim 8, wherein the composition is a powder, slurry, paste or cement.
- 10. A method of calcifying an exposed tooth pulp in an individual in need of said calcification, which method comprises administering a composition comprising an arginine salt and calcium carbonate, wherein a pH of the composition ranges from about 7.5 to about 9.5, to the exposed tooth pulp.
- 11. The method according to claim 10, wherein the composition is in a form selected from the group consisting of a powder, slurry, paste or cement.
- 12. The method according to claim 10, wherein the exposed tooth pulp is a pulp chamber from which pulp tissue has been removed.
- 13. A method of calcifying the base or all of a pit or fissure in a tooth in an individual in need of said calcification, which method comprises administering a composition comprising an arginine salt and calcium carbonate, wherein a pH of the composition ranges from about 7.5 to about 9.5, to the pit or fissure in the tooth.
- 14. The method according to claim 13, wherein the composition is in a form selected from the group consisting of a powder, slurry, paste or cement.
- 15. The method according to any one of claims 1, 4, 8, 10, and 13, wherein the pH ranges from about 8.0 to about 9.0.
- 16. The method according to claim 13, wherein the composition is selected from the group consisting of a dental care product, a food product, and a chewing gum.
- 17. An oral composition consisting essentially of a guandinium carbonate or bicarbonate salt or free base, a calcium salt which is poorly soluble in water, and an orally acceptable carrier, wherein the pH of the composition ranges from about 7.5 to about 9.5.
- 18. The composition of claim 17, wherein the guanidinium is arginine.
- 19. The composition of claim 18, wherein the arginine salt is arginine bicarbonate.
- 20. The composition of claim 17, wherein the solubility of the calcium salt is between about 0.1 and about 100 mg in 100 ml of water near and about room temperature and near and above pH of about 5.
- 21. The composition of claim 17, wherein the calcium salt is selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate, monocalcium phosphate, dicalcium phosphate, tricalcium phosphate, calcium fluoride, calcium monofluorophosphate, sodium calcium pyrophosphate, calcium laurate, calcium palmitate, and combinations thereof.
- 22. The composition according to claim 17, wherein the oral composition is selected from the group consisting of a dental care product, a food product, and chewing gum.
- 23. A composition consisting essentially of an arginine carbonate or bicarbonate salt and calcium carbonate, wherein the pH of the composition ranges from about 7.5 to about 9.5, in an aqueous slurry or paste.
- 24. The composition according to claim 23, wherein the aqueous slurry isotonic.
- 25. A powder composition consisting essentially of an arginine carbonate or bicarbonate salt and calcium carbonate, wherein the pH of the composition ranges from about 7.5 to about 9.5 when in contact with a calcium phosphate solution or slurry, dental tubule fluid, saliva, dental pulp or pulpal fluid.
- 26. A pulpal calcification filling composition consisting essentially of an arginine carbonate or bicarbonate salt and calcium carbonate and a filling carrier wherein the pH of the composition ranges from about 7.5 to about 9.5.
- 27. The composition of claim 23, 25, or 26 wherein the arginine salt is arginine bicarbonate.
- 28. An oral composition consisting essentially of a protein denaturing agent, a guanidium alkaline salt or free base, a calcium salt which is poorly soluble in water, and an orally acceptable carrier, wherein the pH of the composition ranges from about 7.5 to about 9.5.
- 29. The composition of claim 28, wherein the guanidinium is arginine.
- 30. The composition of claim 28, wherein the arginine salt is arginine bicarbonate.
- 31. The composition of claim 28, wherein the calcium salt is selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate, monocalcium phosphate, dicalcium phosphate, tricalcium phosphate, calcium fluoride, calcium monofluorophosphate, sodium calcium pyrophosphate, calcium laurate, calcium palmitate, and combinations thereof.
- 32. An oral composition consisting essentially of a therapeutically effective amount of fluoride, a guanidinium carbonate or bicarbonate salt or free base, a calcium salt which is poorly soluble in water, and an orally acceptable carrier, wherein the pH of the composition ranges from about 7.5 to about 9.5.
- 33. The composition of claim 33, wherein the guanidinium is arginine.
- 34. The composition of claim 33, wherein the arginine salt is arginine bicarbonate.
- 35. The composition of any one of claims 18, 23, 25, 26, 28, 29, and 33, wherein the amount of the arginine salt ranges from about 1% to about 25% by weight.
- 36. The composition of claim 32, wherein the calcium salt is selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate, monocalcium phosphate, dicalcium phosphate, tricalcium phosphate, calcium fluoride, calcium monofluorophosphate, sodium calcium pyrophosphate, calcium laurate, calcium palmitate, and combinations thereof.
- 37. The composition of any one of claims 21, 23, 25, 26, 28, 31, and 36 wherein the amount of the calcium carbonate ranges from about 5% to about 50% by weight.
