Claims
- 1. A method of treating teeth or associated tooth structure by means of abrasive particles carried by a fluid stream comprising:
- providing a stream of fluid under pressure;
- providing a source of abrasive particles;
- mixing said abrasive particles and said stream of fluid under pressure to produce an abrasive-laden fluid stream;
- delivering said abrasive-laden stream to the teeth or tooth structure undergoing said dental procedure;
- regulating the pressure of said stream of fluid prior to mixing of said abrasive particles with said stream by providing an electrically controllable multi-pressure level valve having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet interconnected in said stream; and
- providing command signals to said valve, said command signals each corresponding to one of a plurality of selected conditions and being operable to select a corresponding one of said plurality of pressure levels.
- 2. A method according to claim 1, wherein said command signals are manually selected.
- 3. A method according to claim 2, wherein push-bottom controls are provided for manually selecting said command signal levels.
- 4. A method according to claim 1, further comprising the step of visually displaying the output pressure of said valve.
- 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of producing a flashing light indicator of the selected target pressure level toward which the output pressure level is moving.
- 6. A method of treating teeth or associated tooth structure by means of abrasive particles carried by a fluid stream comprising:
- increasing the pressure of a fluid to greater than about 80 psi;
- maintaining a source of said fluid under pressure;
- providing a stream of said fluid under pressure;
- providing a source of abrasive particles;
- mixing said abrasive particles and said stream of fluid under pressure to produce an abrasive-laden stream;
- delivering said abrasive particles to the teeth or tooth structure undergoing said dental procedure;
- regulating the pressure of said stream of fluid prior to mixing of said abrasive particles with said stream by providing an electrically controllable multi-pressure level valve having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet interconnected in said stream; and providing command signals to said valve, said command signals each corresponding to one of a plurality of selected conditions and being operable to select a corresponding one of said plurality of pressure levels.
- 7. The method of claim 6, wherein the pressure of said fluid is increased to no greater than about 200 psi.
- 8. The method of claim 6, wherein said valve has at least three states, each state corresponding to a different pressure of said fluid supplied to said abrasive-mixing means, and wherein each state is set according to said command signal.
- 9. A method for performing a dental procedure on teeth or associated tooth structure by means of abrasive particles carried by a fluid stream, comprising:
- providing a source of fluid under pressure;
- regulating said source of fluid tinder pressure to provide a regulated fluid stream by providing an electrically controllable multi-pressure level valve having a fluid inlet supplied by said source of fluid under pressure and a fluid outlet for supplying said regulated fluid stream;
- providing command signals to said valve, said valve being responsive to said electrical command signal to supply said regulated fluid stream at more than one pressure;
- providing a source of abrasive particles;
- mixing said abrasive particles and said regulated fluid stream to produce an abrasive-laden stream; and
- delivering said abrasive particles to the teeth or tooth structure undergoing said dental procedure.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein said valve has at least three states, each state corresponding to a different pressure of said regulated fluid stream, each state being set according to said command signal.
- 11. The method of claim 9, wherein said command signal is controlled by an operator's interface.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the pressure of said regulated fluid stream is increased by an input device of said operator's interface, and the pressure of said regulated fluid stream is increased by an input device of said operator's interface.
