Claims
- 1. A process for the preparation of silica particulates adapted for formulation into dentifrice compositions, having a surface chemistry such that the number of OH.sup.- functions thereof, expressed in OH.sup.- /nm.sup.2, is equal to or less than 10, a zero charge point (ZCP) ranging from 3 to 6.5 and also a pH, in aqueous suspension, which varies as a function of the electrical conductivity thereof according to the following equation (I):
- pH=b-a log (D) (I)
- in which a is a constant equal to or less than 0.6; b is a constant equal to or less than 8.5; and (D) represents the electrical conductivity of such aqueous silica suspensions expressed in microsiemens.multidot.cm.sup.-1, comprising reacting a silicate with an acid to form a suspension or gel of silica, aging such suspension or gel at a pH of from 6 to 8.5, then again aging such suspension or gel at a pH of 5 or less, separating the silica from such suspension or gel and next washing it with hot water to provide an aqueous suspension thereof, the pH of which, measured on a 20% by weight SiO.sub.2 suspension, is according to the following equation:
- pH=d-c log (D) (II)
- wherein c is a constant equal to or less than 1.0, d is a constant equal to or less than 8.5, and (D) represents the electrical conductivity of the aqueous silica suspension, expressed in microsiemens.multidot.cm.sup.-1, and then drying such aqueous suspension.
- 2. The process as defined by claim 1, comprising forming said suspension or gel of silica by adding said silicate and said acid to a reaction medium which comprises water, a colloidal silica aqueous dispersion, a silicate and/or a salt.
- 3. The process as defined by claim 1, comprising reacting said silicate with said acid at a constant pH ranging from 4 to 10.
- 4. The process as defined by claim 3, said constant pH ranging from 8.5 to 9.5.
- 5. The process as defined hy claim 3, comprising reacting said silicate with said acid at a temperature ranging from 60.degree. to 95.degree. C.
- 6. The process as defined by claim 1, comprising first aging the suspension or gel of silica at a pH of from 6 to 8.5 and a temperature of from 60.degree. to 100.degree. C.
- 7. The process as defined by claim 2, comprising adding the acid to a reaction medium which comprises said silicate at a temperature of from 60.degree. to 95.degree. C., to adjust the pH thereof to a value suitable for said first aging step.
- 8. The process as defined by claim 1, comprising washing said silica with water or an aqueous acid solution, at a temperature ranging from 40.degree. to 80.degree. C.
- 9. The process as defined by claim 8, comprising washing with an aqueous organic acid solution.
- 10. The process as defined by claim 9, said organic acid comprising a carboxylic, dicarboxylic, hydroxycarboxylic or aminocarboxylic acid.
- 11. The process as defined by claim 10, said organic acid comprising acetic, gluconic, tartaric, citric, maleic or glyceric acid.
