Claims
- 1. A method for inhibiting the formation of plaque and calculus on relieving throat irritation in the oral cavity of mammals which comprises periodically treating the surfaces of the throat, mouth, teeth and gums by dissolving and chewing a chewable tablet composition containing an S. mutans inhibiting amount of a dianhydrohexitol compound having the general formula: ##STR2## wherein R' and R" are individually selected from alkyl radicals selected from the group consisting of --CH.sub.3, --C.sub.2 H.sub.5, --C.sub.3 H.sub.7, --C.sub.4 H.sub.9 or --H wherein R' or R" is an alkyl radical of 1-4 carbon atoms whereby at least a portion of the bacteria on said surfaces is essentially inhibited from further growth or removed by dissolution.
- 2. A method of claim 1 wherein said dianhydrohexitol is selected from the group consisting of methylisosorbide, dimethylisosorbide, ethylisosorbide, diethylisosorbide, isopropylisosorbide, diisopropylisosorbide, butylisosorbide, dibutylisosorbide, methylethylisosorbide, methylpropylisosorbide, methylbutylisosorbide, ethylpropylisosorbide and ethylbutylisosorbide.
- 3. A method of claim 1 wherein said dianhydrohexitol is dimethylisosorbide.
- 4. In a chewable tablet dentifrice formulation for treating the throat, teeth and gums which comprises a compressed mixture of sweetening, coloring, and flavoring ingredients, the improvement which consists essentially of including therewith an S. mutans inhibiting amount of a dianhydrohexitol compound having the general formula: ##STR3## wherein R' and R" are individually selected from alkyl radicals selected from the group consisting of --CH.sub.3, --C.sub.2 H.sub.5, --C.sub.3 H.sub.7, --C.sub.4 H.sub.9 or --H when one of R' or R" is an alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms.
- 5. A chewable tablet of claim 4 wherein said dianhydrohexitol compound is selected from the group consisting of methylisosorbide, dimethylisosorbide, ethylisosorbide, diethylisosorbide, isopropylisosorbide, diisopropylisosorbide, butylisosorbide, dibutylisosorbide, methylethylisosorbide, methylpropylisosorbide, methylbutylisosorbide, ethylpropylisosorbide and ethylbutylisosorbide.
- 6. A chewable tablet of claim 4 which contains 10% by weight dimethylisosorbide.
- 7. A chewable tablet composition of claim 4 containing 10-50% by weight dimethylisosorbide.
- 8. A chewable tablet composition of claim 4 containing from 0.02-0.5% by weight allantoin.
