Claims
- 1. A process for the end-group derivatization of an arylene sulfide polymer comprising contacting:
- (a) an arylene sulfide polymer which is characterized by the repeating unit --Ar--S-- wherein Ar is selected from the group consisting of ##STR16## wherein Ar' is a divalent radical selected from the group consisting of ##STR17## Z is selected from the group consisting of --SO.sub.2 -- and --CO--, m is 0 or 1, n is 0 or 1, A is selected from the group consisting of oxygen, sulfur, sulfonyl, and CR.sub.2, wherein each R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl radicals having 1 to about 4 carbon atoms, the total number of carbon atoms in all of the R groups in the molecule being 0 to about 12,
- (b) a compound having the formula ##STR18## wherein R' is selected from the group consisting of an alkyl radical having 1 to about 17 carbon atoms, an aryl radical having 6 to about 16 carbon atoms, and combinations thereof, and X is selected from the group consisting of chlorine and bromine, and
- (c) a solvent wherein said solvent is stable in the presence of said compound and said arylene sulfide polymer is soluble in said solvent, wherein said contacting is performed at an elevated temperature.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein said elevated temperature is at least sufficient to dissolve said arylene sulfide polymer.
- 3. A process according to claim 2 wherein said elevated temperature is less than the temperature at which said compound becomes unstable.
- 4. A process according to claim 2 wherein the molar ratio of said compound to repeating unit of said arylene sulfide polymer is about 0.051 to about 1:1.
- 5. A process according to claim 4 wherein the weight percent of said arylene sulfide polymer based on the total weight of said arylene sulfide polymer and said solvent is in the range of about 5 to about 50.
- 6. A process according to claim 5 wherein the molar ratio of said compound to repeating unit of said arylene sulfide polymer is about 0.1:1 to about 0.35:1 and the weight percent of said arylene sulfide polymer based on the total weight of said arylene sulfide polymer and said solvent is in the range of about 10 to about 25.
- 7. A process according to claim 6 wherein said solvent is selected from the group consisting of chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons, aromatic ethers, cyclic organic amides, aromatic nitrogen containing heterocycles, and sulfones.
- 8. A process according to claim 7 wherein said contacting is carried out in an inert atmosphere.
- 9. A process according to claim 8 wherein the carbonyl carbon of said compound is enriched with carbon-13.
- 10. A process according to claim 8 wherein said compound is benzoyl chloride.
- 11. A process according to claim 9 wherein said compound is benzoyl-carbonyl-.sup.13 C-chloride.
- 12. A process for the end group derivatization of poly(phenylene sulfide) comprising contacting:
- (a) a poly(phenylene sulfide),
- (b) benzoyl chloride, and
- (c) 1-chloronaphthalene,
- wherein said contacting is performed at an elevated temperature, and in an inert atmosphere.
- 13. A process according to claim 12 wherein said benzoyl-carbonyl-.sup.13 C-chloride.
