Claims
- 1. An article formed of polystyrene derivatized only at its surface, wherein said article is prepared by a process which comprises:providing a preformed polystyrene article, having a desired optical or spectroscopic integrity property and discrete assay surface(s), which contains a first electrophilic substituent attached to surface phenyl moieties of said assay surface and to which electrophilic substituent is bound a second substituent which is capable of reacting with an additional group; and reacting said additional group with said second substituent under solvent conditions which maintain the desired optical or spectroscopic integrity property of the article and prevent solvation, gelling, swelling or etching of the article; wherein said additional group is selected from the group consisting of peptides, proteins, enzymes, antibiotics, sugars, nucleic acids and the components thereof, starches, lipids, cells and cell membranes; and wherein the discreet assay surface is a well.
- 2. An article formed of polyaryl polymer derivatized only at its surface, wherein said article is prepared by a process which comprises:providing a preformed article, having a desired optical or spectroscopic integrity property and discrete assay surface(s), which contains a first electrophilic substituent attached to the surface aryl moieties of said assay surface and to which electrophilic substituent is bound a second substituent which is capable of reacting with an additional group; and reacting said additional group with said second substituent under solvent conditions which maintain the desired optical or spectroscopic integrity property of the article and prevent solvation, gelling, swelling or etching of the article, wherein said additional group is selected from the group consisting of peptides, proteins, enzymes, antibiotics, sugars, nucleic acids and the components thereof, starches, lipids, cells and cell membranes; and wherein the discreet assay surface is a well.
- 3. The article of claim 1 wherein said article is a microtiter plate.
- 4. The article of claim 2 wherein said article is a microtiter plate.
- 5. An article formed of polystyrene derivatized only at its surface, wherein said article is prepared by a process which comprises:providing a preformed polystyrene article, having a desired optical or spectroscopic integrity property and discrete assay surface(s), which contains a first electrophilic substituent attached to surface phenyl moieties of said assay surface and to which electrophilic substituent is bound a second substituent which is capable of reacting with an additional group; and reacting said additional group with said second substituent under solvent conditions which maintain the desired optical or spectroscopic integrity property of the article and prevent solvation, gelling, swelling or etching of the article; wherein said additional group is selected from the group consisting of peptides, proteins, enzymes, antibiotics, sugars, nucleic acids and the components thereof, starches, lipids, cells and cell membranes; and wherein the discreet assay surface is an assay plate.
- 6. An article formed of polyaryl polymer derivatized only at its surface, wherein said article is prepared by a process which comprises:providing a preformed article, having a desired optical or spectroscopic integrity property and discrete assay surface(s), which contains a first electrophilic substituent attached to the surface aryl moieties of said assay surface and to which electrophilic substituent is bound a second substituent which is capable of reacting with an additional group; and reacting said additional group with said second substituent under solvent conditions which maintain the desired optical or spectroscopic integrity property of the article and prevent solvation, gelling, swelling or etching of the article, wherein said additional group is selected from the group consisting of peptides, proteins, enzymes, antibiotics, sugars, nucleic acids and the components thereof, starches, lipids, cells and cell membranes; and wherein the discreet assay surface is an assay plate.
- 7. The article of claim 5, wherein the first electrophilic substituent is a bromomethyl group.
- 8. The article of claim 6, wherein the second substituent is a bromomethyl group.
