Claims
- 1. An apparatus for creating an envelope from a readily availably sized sheet of paper, said readily availably sized sheet of paper forming an unfolded envelope, including a central section and a plurality of flap sections to be folded, the plurality of flap sections at least including a bottom flap section and a sealing section, said apparatus comprising:
- means for maintaining the sheet of paper in a predetermined position;
- means for feeding the sheet of paper to the means for maintaining the sheet of paper in the predetermined position;
- means for applying adhesive to at least one of the plurality of flap sections;
- means for folding at least the bottom flap section;
- means for sealing at least the bottom flap section; and
- means for dispensing the envelope from the apparatus;
- said means for .maintaining the sheet of paper in a predetermined position, said means for feeding, said means for applying adhesive, said means for folding, said means for sealing and said means for dispensing comprising a self-contained apparatus;
- whereby the passing of a sheet of paper through the apparatus results in the conversion from a flat sheet of paper to an envelope suitable for use with letters printed on the same readily availably sized sheets of paper.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the apparatus is a desk-top apparatus.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1, said self-contained apparatus further comprising means for cutting the sheet of paper into a predetermined shape while the paper sheet is maintained in the predetermined position, whereby the cut sheet of paper constitutes the unfolded envelope, the predetermined shape of the unfolded envelope including the central section and a plurality of flap sections to be folded, the plurality of flap sections to be folded at least including the bottom flap section and the sealing flap section.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the plurality of flap sections further comprises two side flap sections and wherein the means for folding comprises means for folding the bottom flap section and means for folding the two side flap sections.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the means for folding the two side flap sections comprise two oppositely disposed members and means for moving the two oppositely disposed members for engagement with the two side flap sections for folding the two side flap sections toward the central section.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the means for folding the two side flap sections comprises two oppositely disposed wedge shaped platforms adapted to pivot vertically and reciprocate horizontally.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the means for folding and the means for sealing comprises means for simultaneously folding and sealing the side flaps and the bottom flap.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the means for feeding comprises two separate means for feeding sheets of paper to the means for maintaining the sheet of paper in the predetermined position.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the means for maintaining the sheet of paper in a predetermined position comprises a folding table upon which the sheet of paper is to be supported and pressure plate located above the sheet of paper while supported on the folding table, whereby the sheet of paper is held firmly between the folding table and the pressure plate.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the means for cutting the sheet of paper comprises a plurality of knife edges and means for moving the knife edges in a predetermined manner for cutting the sheet of paper, wherein the means for maintaining the sheet of paper in a predetermined position comprises a folding table, the folding table having slits for receiving the knife edges as the knife edges move and cut the sheet of paper into the predetermined shape of the unfolded envelope.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising means for impressing fold lines in the sheet of paper.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the means for impressing fold lines in the sheet of paper comprises a pair of wheels having a generally sharp edge for engagement with the sheet of paper as the sheet of paper is fed to the predetermined position by means of the means for feeding.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the means for folding at least the bottom flap section further comprises means for dispensing glue.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said readily availably sized sheet of paper has a length and a width, the length being greater than the width, wherein said envelope has a length and a width, the length of said envelope being greater than the width of said envelope and wherein said means for feeding comprises means for feeding the sheet of paper in a predeterminate direction along the length of said sheet of paper and wherein said means for dispensing comprises means for dispensing the envelope in a direction along the width of the envelope 90.degree. displaced from said predeterminate direction.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the apparatus comprises means for modularly integrating the apparatus with a printer.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the means for modularly integrating the apparatus with a printer comprises means for physically connecting the apparatus to a printer, wherein the means for feeding the sheet of paper comprises means for receiving paper as the sheet of paper is being discharged from the printer and for feeding the same sheet of paper to the apparatus.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 1, incorporated into a printer for printing paper of said readily available size.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising means for actuation of a plurality of said means aforementioned in accordance with a predetermined operational sequence.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 1, in combination with a computer, whereby said apparatus is controlled by said computer.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising an embossing device for embossing the envelope.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a postage franking device for affixation of postage to the envelope.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 1, in combination with a printer in operative association with the apparatus, the apparatus further comprising means for initiating actuation of said means for feeding the sheet of paper, said initiating means comprising means for recognizing information appearing on a predetermined sheet of a plurality of sheets of paper discharged by the printer for feeding to the apparatus.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the means for recognizing a predetermined sheet of a plurality of sheets of paper discharged by the printer comprises means for recognizing a bar code affixed to the predetermined sheet and for causing the predetermined sheet to be fed to the apparatus.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the apparatus is configured and arranged for creating an envelope from a rectangular sheet of paper having a size selected from the group consisting of 81/2 inches by 11 inches, 81/2 inches by 14 inches, and 21.0 cm by 29.7 cm, wherein said means for feeding the sheet of paper to the means for maintaining the sheet of paper in the predetermined position comprises means for feeding said rectangular sheet of paper having a size selected from the group consisting of 81/2 inches by 11 inches, 81/2 inches by 14 inches, and 21.0 cm by 29.7 cm.
- 25. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the readily availably sized sheet of paper is a rectangular sheet of paper and wherein said means for feeding comprises means for feeding said rectangular sheet of paper.
- 26. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said means for feeding comprises means for feeding the sheet of paper in a predeterminate direction and wherein said means for dispensing comprises means for dispensing the envelope in a direction 90.degree. displaced from said predeterminate direction.
- 27. An apparatus for creating an envelope from a readily availably sized sheet of paper, said readily availably sized sheet of paper forming an unfolded envelope, including a central section and a plurality of flap sections to be folded, the plurality of flap sections at least including a bottom flap section and a sealing section, said apparatus comprising:
- means for maintaining the sheet of paper in a predetermined position;
- means for feeding the sheet of paper to the means for maintaining the sheet of paper in the predetermined position;
- means for applying adhesive to at least one of the plurality of flap sections comprising means for dispensing double-sided adhesive tape and means for sticking an adhesive side of the tape to one or more of the flap sections, with release tape on the adhesive tape protecting the adhesive side of the adhesive tape;
- means for folding at least the bottom flap section;
- means for sealing at least the bottom flap section; and
- means for dispensing the envelope from the apparatus;
- whereby the passing of a sheet of paper through the apparatus results in the conversion from a flat sheet of paper to an envelope suitable for use with letters printed on the same readily availably sized sheets of paper.
- 28. A method of passing of a readily availably sized sheet of paper through a self-contained apparatus and converting the sheet of paper into an envelope suitable for use with letters printed on the same readily availably sized sheets of paper, whereby the sheet of paper constitutes an unfolded envelope, the predetermined shape of the unfolded envelope including a central section and a plurality of flap sections to be folded, the plurality of flap sections at least including a bottom flap section and a sealing section, the method comprising the steps of:
- feeding the sheet of paper to a predetermined position in the apparatus;
- applying adhesive to at least one of the plurality of flap sections;
- folding at least the bottom flap section;
- sealing at least the bottom flap section with respect to at least another portion of the envelope; and
- dispensing the envelope from the apparatus.
- 29. The method of claim 28, further comprising, prior to step (b), the step of:
- (f) cutting the sheet of paper into the predetermined shape of an unfolded envelope, including at least a central section and a plurality of flap sections to be folded, the plurality of flap sections at least including a bottom flap section and a sealing flap section.
- 30. The method of claim 29, further comprising the step of impressing fold lines on the sheet of paper.
- 31. The method of claim 30, wherein said step of impressing fold lines is performed during the step of feeding the sheet of paper.
- 32. The method of claim 29, wherein the step (f) of cutting further comprises the step of:
- cutting the sheet of paper to form two side flap sections and a sealing flap section.
- 33. The method of claim 29, wherein steps (a), (b) and (f) are performed simultaneously.
- 34. The method of claim 29, wherein steps (c) and (d) are performed simultaneously.
- 35. The method of claim 29, wherein steps (a), (b) and (f) are performed simultaneously and steps (c) and (d) are performed simultaneously.
- 36. The method of claim 29, wherein the step (f) of cutting further comprises the step of:
- cutting the sheet of paper to form two side flap sections and a sealing flap section; and
- wherein steps (a), (b) and (f) are performed simultaneously and steps (c) and (d) are performed simultaneously.
- 37. The method of claim 28, wherein the apparatus comprises means for receiving the sheet of paper directly from a printer and wherein the method further comprises the step of:
- directly receiving the sheet of paper from the printer prior to the step of feeding the sheet of paper to the apparatus.
- 38. The method of claim 37, further comprising the step of:
- printing information on the sheet of paper by means of the printer prior to the step of directly receiving the sheet of paper from the printer.
- 39. The method of claim 38, further comprising the steps of:
- printing information on at least one of a number of sequentially fed sheets of paper by means of the printer;
- printing an address on a predetermined one of the number of sequentially fed sheets of paper;
- wherein the predetermined sheet of paper is converted into an envelope by means of at least steps (a) through (e).
- 40. The method of claim 28, wherein the steps of the method are performed with a sheet of paper having a size selected from the group consisting of 81/2 inches by 11 inches, 81/2 inches by 14 inches, and 21.0 cm by 29.7 cm.
- 41. The method of claim 28, wherein the readily availably sized sheet of paper is a rectangular sheet of paper and wherein said step of feeding comprises the step of feeding said rectangular sheet of paper.
- 42. The method of claim 28, wherein said step of feeding comprises feeding the sheet of paper in a predeterminate direction and wherein said step of dispensing comprises dispensing the envelope in a direction 90.degree. displaced from said predeterminate direction.
- 43. The method of claim 28, wherein said readily availably sized sheet of paper has a length and a width, the length being greater than the width, wherein said envelope has a length and a width, the length of said envelope being greater than the width of said envelope and wherein said step of feeding comprises feeding the readily availably sized sheet of paper in a predeterminate direction along the length of the sheet of paper and wherein said step of dispensing comprises dispensing the envelope in a direction along the width of the envelope 90.degree. displaced from said predeterminate direction.
- 44. A method of integrating letter printing and envelope printing and making into the same apparatus and with the same paper source for both the letter printing and the envelope printing and making, said same paper source comprising a plurality of predetermined sheets of paper, said sheets of paper having a common predetermined size and shape, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) feeding a number of said sheets of paper of a predetermined common size and shape from said same paper source to printing device of the apparatus:
- (b) printing information on at least one of the number of sheets by means of the printing device;
- (c) printing information on a further sheet of paper from among the number of sheets of paper fed in step (a); and
- (d) converting the further sheet of paper into an envelope.
- 45. The method of claim 44, wherein the paper source is a paper tray affixed to the device and wherein step (a) comprises feeding a number of sheets of paper of a predetermined size from the paper tray.
- 46. The method of claim 44, wherein the step (c) of printing information on a further sheet of paper comprises printing a predetermined mark on the further sheet of paper, and wherein the method further comprises, prior to step (d), the steps of:
- sensing the predetermined mark on the further sheet of paper; and
- initiating step (d) of converting the further sheet of paper into an envelope only in response to the sensing of the predetermined mark.
- 47. The method of claim 46, wherein the predetermined mark is a bar code and the step of sensing the predetermined mark comprises sensing the presence of a predetermined bar code.
- 48. The method of claim 44, wherein step (c) of printing information on a further sheet of paper comprises printing an address on the further sheet of paper.
- 49. The method of claim 44, wherein the device further comprises means for controlling the initiation of steps (a), (b), (c) and (d), and wherein the method further comprises the step of initiating steps (a), (b), (c) and (d) with the means for controlling.
- 50. The method of claim 44, further comprising the steps of discharging from the device the at least one of the number of sheets having had information printed thereon in step (b) and discharging from the device the further sheet of paper in the form of an envelope converted in step (d).
- 51. An apparatus for creating an envelope from a readily availably sized sheet of paper, said readily availably sized sheet of paper forming an unfolded envelope, including a central section and a plurality of flap sections to be folded, the plurality of flap sections at least including a bottom flap section and a sealing section, said apparatus comprising:
- a support member for maintaining the sheet of paper in a predetermined position;
- a feeding arrangement for feeding the sheet of paper to the support member;
- an adhesive applicator for applying adhesive to at least one of the plurality of flap sections;
- an arrangement for folding at least the bottom flap section;
- an arrangement for sealing at least the bottom flap section; and
- an arrangement for dispensing the envelope from the apparatus;
- said support member, said feeding arrangement, said adhesive applicator, said folding arrangement, said sealing arrangement and said dispensing arrangement comprising a self-contained apparatus;
- whereby the passing of a sheet of paper through the apparatus results in the conversion from a flat sheet of paper to an envelope suitable for use with letters printed on the same readily availably sized sheets of paper.
- 52. The apparatus of claim 51, further comprising a cutting arrangement for cutting the sheet of paper into a predetermined shape while the paper sheet is maintained in the predetermined position, whereby the cut sheet of paper constitutes the unfolded envelope, the predetermined shape of the unfolded envelope including the central section and a plurality of flap sections to be folded, at least including the bottom flap section and the sealing flap section.
- 53. The apparatus of claim 51, wherein the apparatus is configured and arranged for creating an envelope from a rectangular sheet of paper having a size selected from the group consisting of 81/2 inches by 11 inches, 81/2 inches by 14 inches, and 21.0 cm by 29.7 cm, wherein said feeding arrangement comprises means for feeding to the support member said rectangular sheet of paper having a size selected from the group consisting of 81/2 inches by 11 inches, 81/2 inches by 14 inches, and 21.0 cm by 29.7 cm.
- 54. The apparatus of claim 51, wherein the readily availably sized sheet of paper is a rectangular sheet of paper and wherein said feeding arrangement comprises means for feeding said rectangular sheet of paper.
- 55. A self-contained apparatus for creating an envelope from a substantially rectangular sheet of paper having dimensions 81/2 inches by 11 inches, 81/2 inches by 14 inches or 21.0 centimeters by 29.7 centimeters, said sheet of paper constituting an unfolded envelope, including a central section and a plurality of flap sections to be folded, the plurality of flap sections at least including a bottom flap section and a sealing section, said apparatus comprising:
- a housing;
- means affixed to the housing for containing a quantity of sheets of paper, said means containing at least said substantially rectangular sheet of paper;
- means for feeding said flat, substantially rectangular sheet of paper from said means for containing to a location within the housing;
- means within said housing for applying adhesive to at least one of the plurality of flap sections;
- means within the housing for folding at least the bottom flap section;
- means within the housing for sealing at least the bottom flap section; and
- means for dispensing the envelope from the housing;
- whereby the passing of said substantially rectangular sheet of paper through the apparatus results in the conversion from said substantially rectangular sheet of paper to an envelope having an interior suitably sized for use with letters printed on substantially rectangular sheets of paper having the same dimensions as said substantially rectangular sheet of paper from which said envelope is created.
- 56. An apparatus for creating an envelope, said envelope having a bottom flap sealed to a pair of opposite side flaps, from a sheet of multiple-purpose stock paper, said sheet of multiple-purpose stock paper having no pre-cut side flaps and no pre-formed side flaps and having no pre-application of adhesive on a surface of the sheet, said apparatus comprising:
- an inlet through which said sheet of paper is received for creation of said envelope;
- an outlet through which said envelope is dispensed;
- a feeding device for feeding said sheet of paper through said inlet;
- an adhesive applicator that applies adhesive to a portion of said sheet of paper subsequent to said sheet of paper being begun to be fed through said inlet;
- an arrangement for removing predetermined portions of said sheet of paper to form said opposite pair of side flaps, said bottom flap and a sealing flap;
- an arrangement for sealing each of said pair of side flaps to said bottom flap to form said envelope; and
- a dispensing device for dispensing said envelope through said outlet.
- 57. An apparatus according to claim 56, wherein said sheet of paper has the dimensions 81/2 inches by 11 inches.
- 58. An apparatus according to claim 56, wherein said sheet of paper has the dimensions 81/2 inches by 14 inches.
- 59. An apparatus according to claim 56, wherein said sheet of paper has the dimensions 21.0 centimeters by 29.7 centimeters.
- 60. An apparatus for creating an envelope from any of a plurality of sheets of paper, each sheet of said plurality of sheets of paper being unmodified for envelope formation and being other than a pre-made unique envelope form, said apparatus comprising:
- a paper container that contains said plurality of sheets of paper in a state of readiness at least for envelope creation;
- an arrangement that removes predetermined portions of an individual one of said plurality of sheets of paper to form a pair of opposite side flaps, a bottom flap and a sealing flap;
- a feeding mechanism that feeds said individual one of said plurality of sheets from said paper container to said arrangement for removing predetermined portions of said individual one of said plurality of sheets of paper;
- an adhesive applicator that applies adhesive to a portion of said sheet of paper subsequent to said sheet of paper being begun to be fed by said feeding mechanism; and
- an arrangement that seals each of said pair of side flaps to said bottom flap to form said envelope.
