Claims
- 1. In a method for obtaining a selegiline-like therapeutic effect in a patient undergoing drug withdrawal, the improvement which comprises administering to said patient desmethylselegiline employing a dosage regimen effective to treat one or more withdrawal symptoms.
- 2. The improvement of claim 1, wherein said desmethylselegiline is administered to treat one or more withdrawal symptoms resulting from an addictive psychostimulant.
- 3. The improvement of claim 2, wherein said addictive psychostimulant is cocaine.
- 4. The improvement of claim 2, wherein said addictive psychostimulant is selected from the group consisting of: amphetamines; metharnphetamines; dextroamphetamines; chlorphentermine, methylphenidate, pipradol, p-hydroxymorphedrine, fenfluramine, 1-(2,5-dimethoxy-4-methylphenyl)-2-aminopropane, bupropion and pemoline.
- 5. The improvement of claim 1, wherein said desmethylselegiline is administered to treat one or more withdrawal symptoms resulting from an addictive opiate.
- 6. The improvement of claim 5, wherein said addictive opiate is selected from the group consisting of: opium; morphine; and heroin.
- 7. The improvement of claim 1, wherein said desmethylselegiline is administered to treat one or more withdrawal symptoms resulting from an addictive narcotic.
- 8. The improvement of claim 7, wherein said addictive narcotic is selected from the group consisting of: alphaprodine, anileridine, bezitramide, codeine, dihydrocodeine, diphenoxylate, fentanyl, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, isomethadone, levomethorphan, levorphanol, metazocine, methadone, metopon, oxycodone, oxymorphone, pethidine, phenazocine, piminodine, racemethorphan, racemorphon and thebaine.
- 9. The improvement of claim 1, wherein said desmethylselegiline is administered to treat one or more withdrawal symptoms resulting from an addictive barbiturate.
- 10. The improvement of claim 9, wherein said addictive barbiturate is selected from the group consisting of: allobarbital, amylbarbital, butabarbital, hexabarbital, mephobarbital, methohexital, pentobarbital, phenobarbital, phenethylbarbital, secobarbital, talbutal and thiopental.
- 11. The improvement of claim 1, wherein said desmethylselegiline is administered to treat one or more withdrawal symptoms resulting from alcohol.
- 12. The improvement of claim 1, wherein said desmethylselegiline is administered to treat one or more withdrawal symptoms resulting from nicotine.
- 13. The improvement of claim 1, wherein said withdrawal symptoms are selected from the group consisting of: drug craving; depression, irritability; anergia; amotivation; appetite changes; nausea; shaking; psychomotoric retardation; and irregular sleep patterns.
- 14. The method of any one of claims 1-13, wherein said desmethylselegiline is administered orally.
- 15. The method of any one of claims 1-13, wherein said desmethylselegiline is administered non-orally.
- 16. A pharmaceutical composition, comprising:
a) desmethylselegiline; and b) a second drug useful in the treatment of the symptoms associated with drug withdrawal; wherein said desmethylselegiline and said second drug are present in an amount such that one or more unit doses of said composition are effective in the symptomatic treatment of drug withdrawal.
- 17. The composition of claim 16, wherein said second drug is selected from the group consisting of naloxone, naltrexone or nalorphine.
