Claims
- 1. A process for desulfurizing a solid carbonaceous material comprising:
- a. treating a fresh solid carbonaceous material comprising both organic sulfur compounds and metal compounds and a recycle sulfurized solid carbonaceous material in a first desulfurization zone maintained at an elevated temperature with a gas comprising steam to produce a first solid carbonaceous material of lower sulfur content than the sulfur content of said fresh solid carbonaceous material;
- b. treating a first portion of said first solid carbonaceous material from said first desulfurization zone with a first gas comprising hydrogen in a conversion zone maintained at an elevated temperature to transform said organic sulfur to inorganic sulfur in said first portion of said first solid carbonaceous material and to produce a converted solid carbonaceous material and an effluent gas comprising hydrogen sulfide;
- c. separating said converted solid carbonaceous material from said effluent gas in a first separation zone;
- d. treating said converted solid carbonaceous material from said first separation zone in a second desulfurization zone to remove at least a portion of the inorganic sulfur thereof and to produce a second solid carbonaceous material of lower sulfur content than the sulfur content of said converted solid carbonaceous material;
- e. contacting a second portion of said first solid carbonaceous material from said first desulfurization zone in an adsorption zone with said effluent gas from said first separation zone to remove said hydrogen sulfide from said effluent gas and to produce a sulfurized solid carbonaceous material and a second gas comprising hydrogen of lower hydrogen sulfide content than said effluent gas;
- f. separating said sulfurized solid carbonaceous material from said second gas in a second separation zone;
- g. recycling to and utilizing in said first desulfurization zone said sulfurized solid carbonaceous material from said second separation zone as said recycle sulfurized solid carbonaceous material treated in said first desulfurization zone; and
- h. recycling to and utilizing in said conversion zone said second gas from said second separation zone as at least a part of said first gas comprising hydrogen required to transform said organic sulfur to inorganic sulfur.
- 2. A process for desulfurizing a solid carbonaceous material comprising:
- a. treating a fresh solid carbonaceous material comprising both organic sulfur compounds and metal compounds and a recycle sulfurized solid carbonaceous material in a first desulfurization zone maintained at an elevated temperature with a gas comprising steam to produce a first solid carbonaceous material of lower sulfur content than the sulfur content of said fresh carbonaceous material;
- b. treating a first portion of said first solid carbonaceous material from said first desulfurization zone with a first gas comprising hydrogen in a conversion zone maintained at an elevated temperature to transform said organic sulfur to sulfide sulfur in said first portion of said first solid carbonaceous material, and to produce a converted solid carbonaceous material and an effluent gas comprising hydrogen sulfide;
- c. separating said converted solid carbonaceous material from said effluent gas in a first separation zone;
- d. treating said converted solid carbonaceous material from said first separation zone in a second desulfurization zone to remove at least a portion of the sulfide sulfur thereof and to produce a solid carbonaceous material product of lower sulfur content than the sulfur content of said converted solid carbonaceous material, wherein the total amount of hydrogen in said first gas used in said conversion zone is no greater than about 90,000 scf of hydrogen per ton of fresh solid carbonaceous material per percent sulfur removed based on the difference in the sulfur percent of said fresh carbonaceous material and the sulfur percent of said solid carbonaceous material product;
- e. contacting a second portion of said first solid carbonaceous material from said first desulfurization zone in an adsorption zone with said effluent gas from said first separation zone to remove said hydrogen sulfide from said effluent gas and to produce a sulfurized solid carbonaceous material and a second gas comprising hydrogen of lower hydrogen sulfide content than said effluent gas;
- f. separating said sulfurized solid carbonaceous material from said second gas in a second separation zone;
- g. recycling to and utilizing in said first desulfurization zone said sulfurized solid carbonaceous material from said second separation zone as said recycle sulfurized solid carbonaceous material treated in said first desulfurization zone; and
- h. recycling to and utilizing in said conversion zone said second gas from said second separation zone as at least a part of said first gas comprising hydrogen required to transform said organic sulfur to sulfide sulfur.
- 3. A process for desulfurizing a solid carbonaceous material comprising:
- a. treating a first solid carbonaceous material comprising both organic sulfur compounds and metal compounds and a recycle sulfurized solid carbonaceous material in a first desulfurization zone maintained at a temperature between about 800.degree. to about 1600.degree. F. with a gas comprising steam to produce a second solid carbonaceous material of lower sulfur content than the sulfur content of said first solid carbonaceous material;
- b. treating a first portion of said second solid carbonaceous material from said first desulfurization zone with a first gas comprising hydrogen in a conversion zone maintained at a temperature between about 1000.degree. to about 2000.degree. F. to transform said organic sulfur to sulfide sulfur in said first portion of said second solid carbonaceous material, and to produce a converted solid carbonaceous material and an effluent gas comprising hydrogen sulfide, the total sulfur percent of said converted solid carbonaceous material being at least about 80 percent of the total sulfur percent of said second solid carbonaceous material;
- c. separating said converted solid carbonaceous material from said effluent gas in a first separation zone;
- d. treating said converted solid carbonaceous material from said first separation zone in a second desulfurization zone maintained at a temperature between about 800.degree. to about 1600.degree. F. with a gas comprising steam to remove at least a portion of the sulfide sulfur thereof and to produce a solid carbonaceous material product of lower sulfur content than the sulfur content of said converted solid carbonaceous material;
- e. contacting a second portion of said second solid carbonaceous material from said first desulfurization zone in an adsorption zone with said effluent gas from said first separation zone to remove said hydrogen sulfide from said effluent gas and to produce a sulfurized solid carbonaceous material and a second gas comprising hydrogen of lower hydrogen sulfide content than said effluent gas;
- f. separating said sulfurized solid carbonaceous material from said second gas in a second separation zone;
- g. recycling to and utilizing in said first desulfurization zone said sulfurized solid carbonaceous material from said second separation zone as said recycle sulfurized solid carbonaceous material treated in said first desulfurization zone; and
- h. recycling to and utilizing in said conversion zone said second gas from said second separation zone as at least a part of said first gas comprising hydrogen required to transform said organic sulfur to sulfide sulfur.
- 4. A process for desulfurizing a solid carbonaceous material comprising:
- a. treating a fresh solid carbonaceous material comprising both organic sulfur compounds and metal compounds and a recycle sulfurized solid carbonaceous material in a first desulfurization zone maintained at a temperature between about 800.degree. to about 1600.degree. F. with a gas comprising steam to produce a first solid carbonaceous material of lower sulfur content than the sulfur content of said fresh carbonaceous material;
- b. treating a first portion of said first solid carbonaceous material from said first desulfurization zone with a first gas comprising hydrogen in a conversion zone maintained at a temperature between about 1000.degree. to about 2000.degree. F. to transform said organic sulfur to sulfide sulfur in said first portion of said first solid carbonaceous material, and to produce a converted solid carbonaceous material and an effluent gas comprising hydrogen sulfide;
- c. separating said converted solid carbonaceous material from said effluent gas in a first separation zone;
- d. treating said converted solid carbonaceous material from said first separation zone in a second desulfurization zone maintained at a temperature between about 800.degree. to about 1600.degree. F. with a gas comprising steam to remove at least a portion of the sulfide sulfur thereof and to produce a solid carbonaceous material product of lower sulfur content than the sulfur content of said converted solid carbonaceous material, wherein the total amount of hydrogen in said first gas used in said conversion zone is no greater than about 90,000 scf of hydrogen per ton of said fresh solid carbonaceous material per percent sulfur removed based on the difference in the sulfur percent of said fresh solid carbonaceous material and the sulfur percent of said solid carbonaceous material product;
- e. contacting a second portion of said first solid carbonaceous material from said first desulfurization zone in an adsorption zone with said effluent gas from said first separation zone to remove said hydrogen sulfide from said effluent gas and to produce a sulfurized solid carbonaceous material and a second gas comprising hydrogen of lower hydrogen sulfide content than said effluent gas;
- f. separating said sulfurized solid carbonaceous material from said second gas in a second separation zone;
- g. recycling to and utilizing in said first desulfurization zone said sulfurized solid carbonaceous material from said second separation zone as said recycle sulfurized solid carbonaceous material treated in said first desulfurization zone; and
- h. recycling to and utilizing in said conversion zone said second gas from said second separation zone as at least a part of said first gas comprising hydrogen required to transform said organic sulfur to sulfide sulfur.
- 5. A process for desulfurizing a solid carbonaceous material comprising:
- a. treating a first solid carbonaceous material comprising both organic sulfur compounds and metal compounds and a recycle sulfurized solid carbonaceous material in a first desulfurization zone maintained at a temperature between about 800.degree. to about 1600.degree. F. with a gas comprising steam to produce a second solid carbonaceous material of lower sulfur content than the sulfur content of said first solid carbonaceous material;
- b. treating a first portion of said second solid carbonaceous material from said first desulfurization zone with a first gas comprising hydrogen in a first conversion zone maintained at a temperature between about 1000.degree. to about 2000.degree. F. to transform said organic sulfur to sulfide sulfur in said first portion of said second solid carbonaceous material, and to produce a converted second solid carbonaceous material and a first effluent gas comprising hydrogen sulfide, the total sulfur percent of said converted second solid carbonaceous material being at least about 80 percent of the total sulfur percent of said second solid carbonaceous material;
- c. separating said converted second solid carbonaceous material from said first effluent gas in a first separation zone;
- d. treating said converted second solid carbonaceous material from said first separation zone in a second desulfurization zone maintained at a temperature between about 800.degree. to about 1600.degree. F. with a gas comprising steam to remove at least a portion of the sulfide sulfur thereof and to produce a third solid carbonaceous material of lower sulfur content than the sulfur content of said converted second solid carbonaceous material;
- e. treating said third solid carbonaceous material from said second desulfurization zone in a second conversion zone maintained at a temperature between about 1000.degree. and about 2000.degree. F. with a second gas comprising hydrogen to transform organic sulfur to sulfide sulfur in said third solid carbonaceous material, and to produce a converted third solid carbonaceous material and a second effluent gas comprising hydrogen sulfide, the total sulfur percent of said converted third solid carbonaceous material being at least about 80 percent of the total sulfur percent of said third solid carbonaceous material;
- f. separating said converted third solid carbonaceous material from said second effluent gas in a second separation zone;
- g. treating said converted third solid carbonaceous material from said second separation zone in a third desulfurization zone to remove at least a portion of the sulfide sulfur thereof and to produce a solid carbonaceous material product of lower sulfur content than the sulfur content of said converted third solid carbonaceous material;
- h. contacting a second portion of said second solid carbonaceous material from said first desulfurization zone in an adsorption zone with said first effluent gas from said first separation zone or said second effluent
- gas from said second separation zone to remove hydrogen sulfide from said first or second effluent gas and to produce a sulfurized solid carbonaceous material and a third gas comprising hydrogen of lower hydrogen sulfide content than said effluent gas utilized in said adsorption zone;
- i. separating said sulfurized solid carbonaceous material from said third gas in a third separation zone;
- j. recycling to and utilizing in said first desulfurization zone said sulfurized solid carbonaceous material from said third separation zone as said recycle sulfurized solid carbonaceous material treated in said first desulfurization zone; and
- k. recycling to and utilizing in said first or second conversion zone said third gas from said third separation zone as at least a part of said first or second gas comprising hydrogen required to transform said organic sulfur to sulfide sulfur.
- 6. A process for desulfurizing a solid carbonaceous material comprising:
- a. treating a first solid carbonaceous material comprising both organic sulfur compounds and metal compounds and a recycle sulfurized solid carbonaceous material in a first desulfurization zone maintained at a temperature between about 800.degree. to about 1600.degree. F. with a gas comprising steam to produce a second solid carbonaceous material of lower sulfur content than the sulfur content of said first solid carbonaceous material;
- b. treating a first portion of said second solid carbonaceous material from said first desulfurization zone with a first gas comprising hydrogen in a first conversion zone maintained at a temperature between about 1000.degree. to about 2000.degree. F. to transform said organic sulfur to sulfide sulfur in said first portion of said second solid carbonaceous material, and to produce a converted second solid carbonaceous material and a first effluent gas comprising hydrogen sulfide;
- c. separating said converted second solid carbonaceous material from said first effluent gas in a first separation zone;
- d. treating said converted second solid carbonaceous material from said first separation zone in a second desulfurization zone maintained at a temperature between about 800.degree. to about 1600.degree. F. with a gas comprising steam to remove at least a portion of the sulfide sulfur thereof and to produce a third solid carbonaceous material of lower sulfur content than the sulfur content of said converted second solid carbonaceous material;
- e. treating said third solid carbonaceous material from said second desulfurization zone in a second conversion zone maintained at a temperature between about 1000.degree. and about 2000.degree. F. with a second gas comprising hydrogen to transform organic sulfur to sulfide sulfur in said third solid carbonaceous material, and to produce a converted third solid carbonaceous material and a second effluent gas comprising hydrogen sulfide;
- f. separating said converted third solid carbonaceous material from said second effluent gas in a second separation zone;
- g. treating said converted third solid carbonaceous material from said second separation zone in a third desulfurization zone to remove at least a portion of the sulfide sulfur thereof and to produce a solid carbonaceous material product of lower sulfur content than the sulfur content of said converted third solid carbonaceous material, wherein the total amount of hydrogen in said first and second gas used in said first and second conversion zones is no greater than about 90,000 scf of hydrogen per ton of first solid carbonaceous material per percent sulfur removed based on the difference in the sulfur percent of said first solid carbonaceous material and the sulfur percent of said solid carbonaceous material product;
- h. contacting a second portion of said second solid carbonaceous material from said first desulfurization zone in an adsorption zone with said first effluent gas from said first separation zone or said second effluent gas from said second separation zone to remove hydrogen sulfide from said first or second effluent gas and to produce a sulfurized solid carbonaceous material and a third gas comprising hydrogen of lower hydrogen sulfide content than said efffluent gas utilized in said adsorption zone;
- i. separating said sulfurized solid carbonaceous material from said third gas in a third separation zone;
- j. recycling to and utilizing in said first desulfurization zone said sulfurized solid carbonaceous material from said third separation zone as said recycle sulfurized solid carbonaceous material treated in said first desulfurization zone; and
- k. recycling to and utilizing in said first or second conversion zone said third gas from said third separation zone as at least a part of said first or second gas comprising hydrogen required to transform said organic sulfur to sulfide sulfur.
- 7. The process of claim 1, or 2, or 4 wherein said fresh solid carbonaceous material is selected from the group consisting of coal char, a product produced from coal char, solvent refined coal, and a product produced from solvent refined coal.
- 8. The process of claim 3, or 4 wherein said first gas comprising hydrogen also comprises hydrogen sulfide.
- 9. The process of claim 8 wherein said first gas comprising hydrogen also comprises up to about 2 mole percent hydrogen sulfide.
- 10. The process of claim 4 wherein said total amount of hydrogen in said first gas is no greater than about 15,000 scf of hydrogen per ton of fresh solid carbonaceous material per percent sulfur removed based on the difference in the sulfur percent of said fresh carbonaceous material and the sulfur percent of said solid carbonaceous material product.
- 11. The process of claim 6 wherein said total amount of hydrogen in said first gas is no greater than about 15,000 scf of hydrogen per ton of first solid carbonaceous material per percent sulfur removed based on the difference in the sulfur percent of said first carbonaceous material and the sulfur percent of said solid carbonaceous material product.
- 12. The process of claim 12 or 13 wherein said total amount of hydrogen in said first gas is no greater than about 13,000 scf.
- 13. The process of claim 5 or 6 wherein said first desulfurization zone is maintained at a temperature between about 800.degree. to about 1400.degree. F., said first conversion zone is maintained at a temperature between about 1200.degree. to about 1600.degree. F., said second desulfurization zone is maintained at a temperature between about 800.degree. to about 1400.degree. F., said second conversion zone is maintained at a temperature between about 1200.degree. to about 1600.degree. F., said third desulfurization zone is maintained at a temperature between about 800.degree. to about 1400.degree. F., and said converted third solid carbonaceous material is treated with a gas comprising steam.
- 14. The process of claim 3, or 4, or 5, or 6 wherein said treating with a gas comprising steam occurs in a fluidized bed.
- 15. The process of claim 3, or 5, or 6 wherein said first solid carbonaceous material is selected from the group consisting of coal char, a product produced from coal char, solvent refined coal, and a product produced from solvent refined coal.
- 16. The process of claim 5, or 6 wherein said first or second gas comprising hydrogen also comprises hydrogen sulfide.
- 17. The process of claim 18 wherein said first or second gas comprising hydrogen also comprises up to about 2 mole percent hydrogen sulfide.
- 18. The process of claim 1 further comprising recovering said second solid carbonaceous material.
- 19. The process of claim 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 further comprising recovering said solid carbonaceous material product.
