Claims
- 1. A low profile detachable fiber optic connector detachably interconnecting an hermetically packaged optic source or sink with a first optic waveguide comprising:
- an hermetic enclosure enclosing an optic source or sink and having a pass-through hole therein;
- a second optic waveguide having a first termination and a second termination, said second optic waveguide aligned to optically interact with said optic source or sink from said first termination of said second optic waveguide, said second optic waveguide passing through said hermetic enclosure at said pass-through hole;
- a first ferrule, said first ferrule surrounding said first optic waveguide adjacent a termination of said first optic waveguide;
- a second ferrule, said second ferrule surrounding said second optic waveguide adjacent said second termination and sealed thereto, said second ferrule further sealed to said pass-through hole so that said second optic waveguide and said second ferrule hermetically seal said pass-through hole;
- a female receptacle mounted against and supported by an exterior wall of said hermetic enclosure, said female receptacle cooperating with said exterior wall to form a non-hermetic enclosure around said second ferrule, said female receptacle having an exterior surface thereof having first and second guide rail means formed therein;
- said first and second guide rails extending longitudinally parallel to each other, said first guide rail terminating at a first indent in said female receptacle and said second guide rail terminating at a second indent in said female receptacle;
- a spring retainer having a center section mechanically engaging said first ferrule, said spring retainer further having two resilient extensions extending from said center section of said spring retainer generally parallel to said first and second guide rails, said two resilient extensions including alignment and retention tabs protruding transversely from said extensions, said alignment and retention tabs engaged with said two indents of said female receptacle; and
- spring biasing means cooperating with said spring retainer and said female receptacle to bias said second termination of said second optic waveguide against said termination of said first optic waveguide.
- 2. The low profile detachable fiber optic connector of claim 1 further comprising first and second bevels, wherein said first and second guide rails are adjacent first and second bevels, respectively.
- 3. The low profile detachable fiber optic connector of claim 1 wherein said spring retainer comprises an integral piece of formed sheet metal.
- 4. The low profile detachable fiber optic connector of claim 1 wherein said optic waveguide comprises optical fiber.
- 5. The low profile detachable fiber optic connector of claim 1 wherein said optic source or sink comprises an optoelectronic device for generating or receiving optical signals.
- 6. A male fiber optic connector comprising:
- an optical fiber;
- a cylindrical ferrule having a precise bore therein, said optical fiber passing therethrough and permanently attached thereto;
- a connector body having at a first end a first cylindrical opening of first inside diameter retaining said cylindrical ferrule and an outer diameter of first outside diameter, and at a second end longitudinally opposite said first end a second cylindrical opening of a second inside diameter less than said first inside diameter but coaxial to said cylindrical opening and extending thereto, said optical fiber extending from said cylindrical ferrule through said second cylindrical opening, said second end of said connector body having a second outside diameter less than said first outside diameter;
- a resilient strap having a base portion and two extensions therefrom to form a generally "U" shape, said base portion having a hole formed therein, said base hole having an inside diameter slightly greater than said second outside diameter of said connector body, said base portion hole concentric to said connector body about said second end, said extensions each having a small extension protruding therefrom radially inward towards the optical fiber;
- a spring means concentric with said second end of said connector body and extending longitudinally from said resilient strap to an interface between said first outside diameter of said connector body and said second outside diameter of said connector body, said spring means applying a force tending to separate said interface and said strap; and
- a retaining means co-operatively engaged with said connector body preventing actual separation of said interface and said strap.
- 7. The male fiber optic connector of claim 6 further comprising a gasket means concentric to said ferrule and adjacent to said connector body.
