Claims
- 1. A detector assembly for use in a transcription system, the detector assembly comprising:a housing for removeably mounting adjacent a writing surface; a plurality of signal receivers attached to the housing for receiving position signals transmitted through the air from a stylus when the stylus is positioned adjacent the writing surface, the transcription system using times of flight of the position signals to determine positions of the stylus relative to the writing surface; and at least one user activated control switch on a surface of the housing whose activation by a user produces a control signal which causes the transcription system to perform a function in response.
- 2. A detector assembly according to claim 1 wherein the detector assembly further includes a mechanism for removeably mounting the detector assembly to a writing surface.
- 3. A detector assembly according to claim 2 wherein the mounting mechanism is a suction cup.
- 4. A detector assembly according to claim 3 wherein the suction cup is cam activated.
- 5. A detector assembly according to claim 1 wherein activation of one of the control switches causes a new blank file for capturing transcription information to be created.
- 6. A detector assembly according to claim 1 wherein activation of one of the control switches causes at least a portion of an image displayed on a monitor operatively connected to the transcription system to be erased.
- 7. A detector assembly according to claim 1 wherein activation of one of the control switches causes transcription data to be saved to memory.
- 8. A detector assembly according to claim 1 wherein activation of one of the control switches causes an image displayed on a monitor operatively connected to the transcription system to be printed.
- 9. A detector assembly according to claim 1 wherein activation of one of the control switches causes transcription data to be electronically mailed.
- 10. A detector assembly according to claim 1 wherein activation of one of the control switches causes an image displayed on a monitor operatively connected to the transcription system to be facsimiled.
- 11. A detector assembly according to claim 1 wherein activation of one of the control switches causes an image displayed on a monitor operatively connected to the transcription system to be modified.
- 12. A detector assembly according to claim 1 wherein activation of one of the control switches causes a writing property associated with a stylus by the transcription system to be changed.
- 13. A detector assembly according to claim 1 wherein activation of one of the control switches causes a color associated with the stylus by the transcription system to be changed.
- 14. A detector assembly according to claim 1, the detector assembly further including a microphone.
- 15. A detector assembly according to claim 1, the detector assembly further including a power source for operating the detector assembly.
- 16. A detector assembly according to claim 15, wherein the power source is a battery.
- 17. A detector assembly according to claim 16, wherein the battery has a voltage of between about 1.5 volts and 24 volts.
- 18. A detector assembly according to claim 16, wherein the battery has a voltage of between about 1.5 volts and 12 volts.
- 19. A detector assembly according to claim 1, wherein the detector assembly has sufficiently low energy requirements such that it can function under power provided by a laptop battery.
- 20. A detector assembly according to claim 1, wherein the detector assembly further includes a light which becomes illuminated when the detector assembly is operably connected to a microprocessor external to the detector assembly.
- 21. A detector assembly according to claim 1, wherein the detector assembly further includes a reference signal receiver attached to the housing for receiving reference signals transmitted through the air from the stylus.
- 22. A method for operating a transcription system comprising:attaching a detector assembly to a writing surface, the detector assembly comprising a housing, a plurality of signal receivers attached to the housing for receiving position signals transmitted through the air from a stylus when the stylus is positioned adjacent the writing surface, the transcription system using times of flight of the position signals to determine positions of the stylus relative to the writing surface, and at least one user activated control switch on a surface of the housing whose activation by a user when the detector assembly is mounted to the writing surface produces a control signal which causes the transcription system to perform a function in response; and activating one of at least one user activated control switches; producing a control signal as a result of activating the user activated control switch; and having the transcription system perform a function in response to receiving the control signal.
- 23. A method according to claim 22 wherein having the transcription system perform a function includes erasing at least a portion of an image displayed on a monitor operatively connected to the transcription system.
- 24. A method according to claim 22 wherein having the transcription system perform a function includes saving transcription data to memory.
- 25. A method according to claim 22 wherein having the transcription system perform a function includes printing at least a portion of an image displayed on a monitor operatively connected to the transcription system.
- 26. A method according to claim 22 wherein having the transcription system perform a function includes electronically mailing transcription data.
- 27. A method according to claim 22 wherein having the transcription system perform a function includes facsimiling at least a portion of an image displayed on a monitor operatively connected to the transcription system.
- 28. A method according to claim 22 wherein having the transcription system perform a function includes modifying at least a portion of an image displayed on a monitor operatively connected to the transcription system.
- 29. A method according to claim 22, further including powering the detector assembly with a battery.
- 30. A method according to claim 29, wherein the battery has a voltage of between about 1.5 volts and 24 volts.
- 31. A method according to claim 29, wherein the battery has a voltage of between about 1.5 volts and 12 volts.
- 32. A method according to claim 29, wherein the battery is a laptop battery.
