Claims
- 1. A position detector constructed from fabric having a first electrically conductive fabric plane and a second electrically conductive fabric plane, whereina plurality of wires are connected to said first plane so as to establish at least one electrical potential gradient across said plane; a mechanical interaction brings said first electrically conducting plane into contact with said second electrically conducting plane such that current flows at the position of said contact; a single wire is connected to said second plane so as to allow said current to flow; and the resistivity of said first plane is higher than the resistivity of said second plane so as to facilitate the establishment of a potential gradient across said first plane and to facilitate current flow through said second plane.
- 2. A position detector according to claim 1, wherein four wires are connected to said first plane, such that a first wire and a second wire create a potential gradient in a first direction and a third wire and a fourth wire create a potential gradient in a second direction.
- 3. A detector according to claim 2, wherein the degree of current flow is indicative of applied force.
- 4. A detector according to claim 1, wherein the degree of current flow is indicative of an area of contact.
- 5. A detector according to claim 1, wherein said fabric has electrically conducting fibres and electrically insulating fibres; and electrical connection means are connected to said electrically conducting fibres of said fabric during a mechanical weaving or knitting process.
- 6. A detector according to claim 1, wherein a conductivity non-uniformity is included in said first plane so as to modify the electrical response to a mechanical interaction.
- 7. A method of manufacturing a position detector constructed from fabric, comprising the steps ofconnecting a plurality of wires to a first fabric conducting plane such that said plane is configured to have an electrical potential gradient established throughout said plane; attaching a single wire to a second fabric electrically conducting plane; displacing said first fabric from said second fabric so as to establish a position detector; and connecting detection apparatus to said wires so as to measure current when a mechanical interaction brings said first plane and said second plane into contact, wherein the resistivity of said first plane is higher than the resistivity of said second plane so as to facilitate the establishment of a potential gradient across said first plane and to facilitate current flow through said second plane.
- 8. A method according to claim 7, wherein four wires are connected to said first plane.
