The present invention relates to a device and a method for making a pompom.
There have conventionally been disclosed pompom making devices for making pompoms which are spherical or round decorations made using yarn materials such as wool yarn. For example, Japanese Unexamined Patent Application No. 2003-221769 discloses a pompom making device including two plate-shaped yarn wrapping members around which wool yarn is wrapped into a coil. End portions of the yarn wrapping members are provided rotatably on a connecting member so as to be connected together. In making a pompom, a tying thread is passed through the yarn wrapping members which are initially set into a straight line. Then, wool yarn is wrapped round the yarn wrapping members. Thereafter, the yarn wrapping members are rotated so as to face each other, and wool yarn which is situated at outer portions of the yarn wrapping members. Then, the tying thread is tied into a knot, and pieces of the wool yarn cut are arranged in a tidy fashion, whereby a pompom is made up.
Pompoms can be attached to bags or mobile phones for decoration or can be used as a decoration material by attaching them to woolen hats. Then, there are users who desire pompoms which match in size objects to be decorated with. For example, when desiring a pompom for attachment to a bag or a mobile phone, a relatively small pompom is desired, whereas when desiring a pompom for attachment to a woolen hat, a relatively large pompom is desired. Then, in conventional pompom making devices, for example, in a pompom making device disclosed in Japanese Unexamined Patent Application No. 2003-221769, the diameter of a pompom is determined by the width of a yarn wrapping member, and therefore, when desiring to make pompoms of different diameters, a plurality of pompom making devices need to be prepared in which yarn wrapping members have different widths, which makes it complex and troublesome to make such pompoms.
The invention has been made in view of the situations described above, and an object thereof is to provide a device and a method for making easily pompoms of different diameters.
According to an aspect of the invention, there is provided a device for making a pompom, having a base member which is formed long in length, and a first yarn wrapping member and a second yarn wrapping member which are formed long in length and which are provided on the base member in such a way as not only to intersect the base member but also to face each other, wherein either of the first yarn wrapping member and the second yarn wrapping member is formed so as to move towards and away from the other of the first yarn wrapping member and the second yarn wrapping member.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a method for making a pompom, having a first step of moving either of a first yarn wrapping member and a second yarn wrapping member which are formed long in length and which are provided on a base member which is formed long in length in such a way as not only to intersect the base member at right angles but also to face each other relative to the base member to control a distance between the first yarn wrapping member and the second yarn wrapping member, a second step of wrapping yarn around the first yarn wrapping member and the second yarn wrapping member together, a third step of temporarily tying a tying thread into a knot at a center of a bunch of wrapped yarn formed in the second step, and a fourth step of cutting the bunch of wrapped yarn formed in the second step at portions thereof which are positioned on sides of the first yarn wrapping member and the second yarn wrapping member which are situated opposite to facing sides thereof.
According to a further aspect of the invention, there is provided a pompom making method, having a first step of passing a tying thread through thread passage grooves which are provided on facing portions of a first yarn wrapping member and a second yarn wrapping member which are formed long and which are provided on a base member which is formed long so as not only to intersect the base member but also to face each other, a second step of wrapping yarn on each of the first yarn wrapping member and the second yarn wrapping member, a third step of pulling on both ends of the tying thread to make a temporary knot thereon, and a fourth step of cutting bunches of wrapped yarn formed in the second step at portions of the first yarn wrapping member and the second yarn wrapping member which are located opposite to facing portions thereof.
According to these aspects of the invention, it is possible to provide the device and method for making pompoms of different diameters.

A yarn wrapping portion 14 is provided to extend from an upper edge portion of the slide portion 11 via a proximal end portion thereof substantially into the shape of a long flat plate. A width of the proximal end portion of the yarn wrapping portion 14 is substantially the same as that of the slide portion 11, and the yarn wrapping portion 14 extends in the way described above via an inclined portion 14a which is formed on an outer side (a side facing the other end side of the base member 30) of the yarn wrapping portion 14. A semi-cylindrical projecting portion 14a1 is formed on the inclined portion 14a in such a way that a longitudinal direction thereof follows a width direction of the inclined portion 14a. A yarn cutting tool inserting groove 15a and a thread passage groove 15b are formed on both longitudinally extending side surface portions of the yarn wrapping portion. A pair of thread locking portions 16 are provided on a front and back sides of an upper edge portion of the yarn wrapping portion 14 which is situated at an upper end portion of the thread passage groove 15b which is situated on an inner side (a side facing one end side of the base member 30) of the yarn wrapping portion 14 so as to project into an L-like shape, allowing a thread to be locked therebetween.
A thread locking portion 17 is provided near a boundary between the yarn wrapping portion 14 and the slide portion 11 on an inner side edge of a surface of the other side (that is, a back side) of the first yarn wrapping member 10. The thread locking portion 17 is made up of a notched portion 17a and a projection 17b which closes the notched portion 17a with a slight gap left therebetween. Further, two longitudinally extending vertical ribs 18a, 18b are formed on a portion of the back side of the first yarn wrapping member 10 which is located upper than the proximal end portion of the yarn wrapping portion 4. Furthermore, two bosses 19a, 19b are formed on the back side of the first yarn wrapping member 10 above the vertical ribs 18a, 18b so as to project therefrom while being aligned side by side along a short side direction of the first yarn wrapping member 10. An interval at which the bosses 19a, 19b are provided is the same as an interval at which locking holes 65 of a deflection preventing member 60, which will be described later, are provided. Then, the bosses 19a, 19b have a diameter which enables them to be inserted into the locking holes 65.
The engaging member 40 which is provided rotatably on the slide portion 11 of the first yarn wrapping member 10 is formed substantially into the shape of an angular rod, and an engaging claw 42 is formed at an end side of a portion located on one side of the shafts 41a, 41b so as to project towards the base member 30 (the engaging portion 31). An elastic portion 43 is formed on the other side of the shafts 41a, 41b, and this elastic portion 43 is formed into a substantially U-like shape when seen from a side thereof so as to have a cut near the shafts 41a, 41b. When the shafts 41a, 41b are inserted into the shaft holes of the shaft supporting portions 12a, 12b, an end portion of the elastic portion 43 is brought into abutment with a side edge surface of the slide portion 11 to thereby be sprung back. This biases the engaging claw 42 towards the engaging portion 31, whereby the engaging claw 42 is kept engaged with the recess portion of the engaging portion 31. When the elastic portion 43 is pushed by the finger against a biasing force of the elastic portion 43, the engagement of the engaging claw 42 with the engaging portion 31 is released. Then, the first yarn wrapping member 10 is allowed to move along a longitudinal direction of the base member 30.
In the second yarn wrapping member 20, a proximal end portion, which is positioned at an end side facing the base member 30, is made into a rotational support portion 21 which takes the form of a bifurcated plate which is divided into a front surface side and a back surface side, and shaft holes 21a, 21b are formed individually in a front surface side plate portion and a back surface side plate portion. The rotational shaft portions 35a, 35b of the base member 30 are inserted rotatably into the shaft holes 21a, 21b. Consequently, the second yarn wrapping member 20 is provided rotatably relative to the base member 30. An end portion of the rotational support portion 21 is formed into a semi-circle when seen from a side thereof. Then, restricting projections 21c, 21d are formed individually at apex portions of the semicircular front and rear surface side plate portions of the rotational support portion 21 so as to project towards each other. The restricting projections 21c, 21d establish a relationship between projecting portions and recessed portion together with the restricting recessed portions 36a, 36b, 37a, 37b and are allowed to fit in the restricting recessed portions 36a, 36b, 37a, 37b. Thus, the second yarn wrapping member 20 is restricted from rotating about the rotational shaft portions 35a, 35b of the base member 30. A yarn wrapping portion 24 extends from an upper edge portion of the rotational support portion 21 into the form a long flat plate. A yarn cutting tool inserting groove 25a and a thread passage groove 25b are formed on both longitudinally long side edge portions of the yarn wrapping portion 24. Similar to the first yarn wrapping member 10, thread locking portions 26 are formed at a distal end portion of the inner thread passage groove 25b. Similarly, an inclined portion 24a is also formed at a proximal end portion of the yarn wrapping portion 24. Similar to the thread locking portion 17 of the first yarn wrapping member 10, a thread locking portion 27, which is made up of a notched portion 27a and a projection 27b, is provided on a back surface of the second yarn wrapping member 20.
Two substantially plate-shaped yarn wrapping amount restriction members 50 are provided for each of the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20. The yarn wrapping amount restriction members 50 are disposed so that their flat planes are towards the longitudinal directions of the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 so as to restrict an amount of yarn wrapped around the thread wrapping portions 14, 24 so as to straddle a space defined therebetween. A slit 51 is formed on each of the yarn wrapping amount restriction members 50 so as to lock and hold a thread therein. Hook-shaped portions 52a, 52b are formed on each yarn wrapping amount restriction member 50 on an opposite side to the side where the slit 51 is formed so as to be brought into engagement with the yarn cutting tool inserting grooves 15a, 25a and the thread passage grooves 15b, 25b. Therefore, the yarn wrapping amount restriction members 50 are disposed so as to slide freely in the longitudinal direction of the yarn wrapping portions 14, 24. The yarn wrapping amount restriction members 50 can be inserted from cuts 14f, 24f which are formed at distal ends and proximal ends of the yarn cutting tool inserting grooves 15a, 25a.
Abutment projecting plates 14g, 24g are formed on front surface sides of the thread passage grooves 15b, 25b at the distal ends of the yarn wrapping portions 14, 24 of the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 so as to project towards each other. The first yarn wrapping member 10 is restricted from moving towards the second yarn wrapping member 20 as a result of the abutment projecting plates 14g, 24g being brought into abutment with each other so as to form a gap between edge portions of facing sides (in other words, inner sides) of the yarn wrapping portions 14, 24, whereby the yarn wrapping mount restriction members 50 are allowed to move. Consequently, the positions of the yarn wrapping mount restriction members 50 on the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 can easily be aligned with each other.
The deflection preventing member 60 is disposed rotatably on a back side of the second yarn wrapping member 20. The defection preventing member 60 is formed into the shape of a substantially rectangular thin plate and has the plurality of locking holes 65 formed thereon. The deflection preventing member 60 is attached to the second yarn wrapping member 20 by detachably press fitting a pin 67 provided near an end portion of the deflection preventing member 60 in a pin hole 24c formed at the distal end of the second yarn wrapping member 20 and can be rotated freely about the pin 67. The deflection preventing member 60 is restricted from rotating as a result of the deflection preventing member 60 being brought into abutment with a vertical rib 28 which is formed on an outer edge of the yarn wrapping portion 24 so as to extend along a longitudinal direction of the yarn wrapping portion 24. Additionally, a boss 21e is formed near the shaft hole 21a of the rotational support portion 21 of the second yarn wrapping member 20 so as to project therefrom. When storing the pompom making device 1, the deflection preventing member 60 can be left fixed in place by inserting the boss 21e in one of the locking holes 65. In addition, yarn wrapping member position scale divisions 63 similar to the yarn wrapping position scale divisions 33 on the base member 30 are formed on a front surface side of the deflection preventing member 60.
<Pompom Making Method 1>
Next, a method for making a pompom 2 using the pompom making device 1 will be described. Firstly, a method for making a pompom 2 will be described which can control the size of a pompom 2 to be made.
Firstly, a space (a distance) between the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 which are provided on the base member 30 so as to face each other is controlled (a first step). Namely, the distance is controlled by moving the first yarn wrapping member 10 which is configured to move along the base member 30. A space between the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 constitutes a diameter (a size) of a pompom 2 to be made. As this occurs, the restricting projections 21c, 21d of the second yarn wrapping member 20 are fitted in the restricting recessed portion 36a, 36b of the base member 30, respectively, whereby the second yarn wrapping member 20 is restricted from rotating. When the space between the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 is controlled, the yarn wrapping amount restriction members 50 are also moved to control (specify) a yarn wrapping amount. When attempting to make a pompom 2 having a high density of yarn 2a, a great space should be taken between the yarn wrapping amount restriction members 50. In addition, in case a space between the yarn wrapping amount restriction members 50 on the first yarn wrapping member 10 is made to match a space between the yarn wrapping amount restriction members 50 on the second yarn wrapping member 20, it is possible to make a pompom 2 which is balanced in shape. Further, the deflection preventing member 60 is rotated and the bosses 19a, 19b of the first yarn wrapping member 10 are inserted into the locking holes 65 of the deflection preventing member 60. Then, the deflection of the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second wrapping member 20 is prevented when yarn is wrapped around the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 so as to straddle the space defined therebetween.
Next, yarn (wool yarn 2a) is wound around the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 so as to straddle the space therebetween (a second step). Although a thickness or size of a pompom made differs depending upon a yarn thickness, a well balanced pompom 2 can be made by wrapping the yarn substantially on the order of 80 to 100 times.
Next, the resulting bunch of wrapped yarn (wool yarn 2a) is temporarily tied at a center thereof with a tying thread 2b (a third step). As this occurs, scale divisions denoting the position of the first yarn wrapping member 10 which are indicated by the marks 13a, 13b are read, and by using a position on the center position scale divisions 34 which corresponds to the read scale divisions as a guide, a center position of the bunch of wrapped yarn can easily be grasped. Next, a yarn cutting tool for cutting yarn such as blades of a pair of scissors are inserted into the yarn cutting tool inserting grooves 15a, 25a which are located at portions of the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 which lie opposite to facing portions thereof to cut wrapped yarn (wool yarn 2a) at the portions of the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 which lie opposite to the facing portions thereof (a fourth step). Since the yarn cutting tool such as the scissors can be inserted into the yarn cutting tool inserting grooves 15a, 25a, it is easy to cut the wool yarn 2a. Then, after the wool yarn 2a is so cut, the bunch of wool yarn 2a wrapped and cut in the ways described above is removed from the pompom making device 1, and the tying thread 2b is tied up, whereby a bunch of many pieces of wool yarn 2a which are cut substantially to the same length and tied at the center thereof can be made as shown in
In this way, according to the pompom making device 1, since the distance between the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 can be controlled by moving the first yarn wrapping member 10 towards the second yarn wrapping member 20 along the base member 30, it is possible to make pompoms of various sizes (diameters). In addition, the first yarn wrapping member 10 can be moved easily only by pushing on the elastic portion 43 of the engaging member 40. The engaging claw 42 of the elastic member 43 is automatically brought into engagement with the engaging portion 31 when the finger is removed from the elastic member 43, whereby the first yarn wrapping member 10 is fixed in place relative to the base member 30. Moreover, since the engaging portion 31 has the shape in which the dents and projections are repeated at equal intervals, the control of the distance between the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 is visible and easy.
<Pompom Making Method 2>
Next, another pompom making method for making a pompom using the pompom making device 1 will be described. A pompom making method for making a pompom is a method for making a smallest pompom 2 using the pompom making device 1.
As a preparation, the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 are move towards each other so as to bring the abutment projecting plates 14g, 24g into abutment with each other. Thereafter, the second yarn wrapping member 20 is rotated, and the restricting projections 21c, 21d of the second yarn wrapping member 20 are fitted in the restricting recessed portions 37a, 37b, so that an L-like shape is formed by the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 (refer to

In this way, the thread passage grooves 15b, 25b are provided on the facing portions of the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20, and the tying thread 2b is inserted through the thread passage grooves 15b, 25b in advance, whereby a small pompom 2 can be made by wrapping wool yarn 2a around each of the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20.
<Tassel Making Method>
Next, a method for making a tassel 6 shown in
Similar to the <Pompom Making Method 1>, the blades of the scissors are inserted into the yarn cutting tool inserting grooves 15a, 25a to cut the wool yarn 6a. Then, an upper portion of the bunch of wrapped wool yarn 6a which is located at a side where the hanging thread 6b is attached is tied with a tying thread 6d. Then, the lengths of the pieces of wool yarn 6a are adjusted neatly with the scissors or the like, whereby a tassel 6 is completed.
Thus, the embodiment of the invention has been described heretofore. However, the invention is not limited by the embodiment, and hence, various modifications can be made thereto. For example, the base member 30, the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 are formed into the shapes of long flat plates. However, they can also be formed into other long shapes (the shapes of a long round rod, a long angular rod and the like). The deflection preventing member 60 only has to be provided so as to extend between the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20, and hence, on the contrary to the embodiment, the deflection preventing member 60 may be attached to the first yarn wrapping member 10. In addition, the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 are provided so as to intersect the base member 30 at right angles. However, the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 can also be provided relative to the base member 30 in various fashions. For example, the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 can be provided at an angle relative to the base member 30. In addition, either or both of the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 may be designed to move along the base member 30. Namely, the first yarn wrapping member 10 and the second yarn wrapping member 20 should be configured so as to move towards and away from each other so as to control the space therebetween.
