Claims
- 1. An assembly for protecting a section of pipe buried underground, said assembly comprising:
a protective collar having a first end, a second end and defining an opening of a first diameter, extending from said first end to said second end, through which a section of pipe can pass, said protective collar being comprised of at least two separable sections that can be separated along seams that extend between said first end and said second end, wherein said protective collar has an enlarged region between said first end and said second end that has an outside diameter that is at least two inches larger than said first diameter.
- 2. The assembly according to claim 1, wherein said enlarged region has an outside diameter that is at least four inches larger than said first diameter.
- 3. The assembly according to claim 1, wherein said enlarged region has an annular cross-section including an inner wall of said first diameter and an outside wall of said outside diameter.
- 4. The assembly according to claim 3, wherein a gap exists between said inside wall and said outside wall, said gap being at least two inches wide.
- 5. The assembly according to claim 4, wherein said support ribs extend through said gap at points between said inside wall and said outside wall.
- 6. The assembly according to claim 1, wherein said protective collar has a length between said first end and said second end of between eight inches and thirty six inches.
- 7. The assembly according to claim 1, wherein each of said separable sections contain flanges that abut along said seams when assembled into said protective collar.
- 8. The assembly according to claim 7, further including mechanical fasteners for selectively joining said flanges along said seams.
- 9. The assembly according to claim 1, wherein each of said separable sections has an identical structure.
- 10. A method of protecting sections of a utility pipe that is to be buried, wherein said sections of that utility pipe are to be later excavated and exposed for tapping purposes, said method comprising the steps of:
determining the sections of the utility pipe that will be excavated and exposed for tapping purposes prior to said utility pipe being buried; installing a removable protective collar over said utility pipe in said sections that have been determined to be excavated and exposed; and removing said protective collar from the sections of the utility pipe after those sections are excavated and exposed.
- 11. The method according to claim 10, wherein said protective collar is comprised of a plurality of interconnectable pieces, and said step of installing a removable protective collar includes assembling said interconnectable pieces around said sections of said utility pipe.
- 12. The method according to claim 11, wherein said step of removing said protective collar includes disconnecting said interconnectable pieces.
- 13. A method, comprising:
determining what sections of a utility pipe may be excavated for tapping purposes; placing a protective collar around said utility pipe in said sections; burying said utility pipe; excavating said utility pipe above a protective collar, thereby exposing that protective collar; and removing said protective collar.
- 14. The method according to according to claim 13, wherein said protective collar is comprised of a plurality of interconnectable pieces, and said step of installing a removable protective collar includes assembling said interconnectable pieces around said sections of said utility pipe.
- 15. The method according to claim 13, wherein said step of removing said protective collar includes disconnecting said interconnectable pieces.
- 16. The method according to claim 15, wherein said protective collar s at least four inches wider than said utility pipe, wherein said step of removing said protective collar produces an open area at least two inches wide around said sections of said utility pipe.
