Claims
- 1. A device for dispensing liquid, comprising:
a housing with a plurality of liquid dispensing members and at least one liquid receiving member, said housing defining a first pressure chamber and a second pressure chamber, said second pressure chamber containing said at least one liquid receiving member; and a differential pressure generator connected to at least one of said first and second pressure chambers, wherein said second pressure chamber is rarefied with respect to said first pressure chamber when a pressure differential is generated to cause a liquid in said liquid dispensing members to flow to said at least one liquid receiving member.
- 2. The device of claim 1, wherein the first pressure chamber is in fluid communication with ambient environment.
- 3. The device of claim 1, wherein said housing holds in said first pressure chamber a first end of each of the plurality of said liquid dispensing members, and said housing holds in said second pressure chamber a second end of each of the plurality of said liquid dispensing members and said at least one liquid receiving member.
- 4. The device of claim 1, further comprising a support adjacent to said housing, wherein said support supports a plurality of said liquid receiving members.
- 5. The device of claim 4, wherein said support is movable relative to said housing.
- 6. The device of claim 4, wherein said support is moveable relative to said housing to sequentially position said plurality of liquid receiving members in said housing, one said liquid receiving member at a time.
- 7. The device of claim 1, wherein said second pressure chamber contains said at least one liquid receiving member, and further comprising a positioning device within said second pressure chamber to position said at least one liquid receiving member in a receiving position.
- 8. The device of claim 7, wherein said positioning device comprises a movable element having a gripping end.
- 9. A device for dispensing liquid, comprising:
a housing with a plurality of liquid dispensing members and at least one liquid receiving member, said housing defining a first pressure chamber and a second pressure chamber, said second pressure chamber containing said at least one liquid receiving member; a differential pressure generator connected to at least one of said first and second pressure chambers, wherein said second pressure chamber is rarefied with respect to said first pressure chamber when a pressure differential is generated to cause a liquid in said dispensing members to flow to said at least one liquid receiving member; and a plug to selectively seal said second pressure chamber from the ambient environment.
- 10. The device of claim 9, wherein said plug comprises a valve in fluid communication with said second pressure chamber.
- 11. A device for dispensing liquid, comprising:
a housing with a plurality of liquid dispensing members and at least one liquid receiving member, said housing defining a first pressure chamber and a second pressure chamber, said second pressure chamber containing said at least one liquid receiving member; a differential pressure generator connected to at least one of said first and second pressure chambers, wherein said second pressure chamber is rarefied with respect to said first pressure chamber when a pressure differential is generated to cause a liquid in said dispensing members to flow to said at least one liquid receiving member; wherein said housing holds in said first pressure chamber a first end of each of the plurality of said liquid dispensing members, and said housing holds in said second pressure chamber a second end of each of the plurality of said liquid dispensing members and said at least one receiving member, and wherein said differential pressure generator is in fluid communication with said second pressure chamber.
- 12. A device for dispensing liquid, comprising:
a housing with a plurality of liquid dispensing members and at least one liquid receiving member, said housing defining a first pressure chamber and a second pressure chamber, said second pressure chamber containing said at least one liquid receiving member; a differential pressure generator connected to at least one of said first and second pressure chambers, wherein said differential pressure generator can generate a pressure differential between said first and second pressure chambers, and wherein said second pressure chamber is rarefied with respect to said first pressure chamber when said pressure differential is generated to cause a liquid in said dispensing members to flow to said at least one liquid receiving member; and wherein said differential pressure generator is in fluid communication with said second pressure chamber and comprises a movable member to alter the pressure within said second pressure chamber.
- 13. The device of claim 12, wherein said movable member seals said second pressure chamber from the ambient environment.
- 14. The device of claim 12, wherein said movable member comprises a flexible member.
- 15. The device of claim 14, wherein said flexible member is between a pair of movable plates.
- 16. A device for dispensing liquid, comprising:
a holder having a plurality of liquid dispensing members mounted therein, each of the plurality of said liquid dispensing members comprising a container between a first and a second ends of said liquid dispensing member; at least one liquid receiving member; a housing defining a first pressure chamber and a second pressure chamber; and a differential pressure generator connected to at least one of said first and second pressure chambers, wherein said differential pressure generator can generate a pressure differential between said first and second pressure chambers, and wherein said housing contains said holder and said liquid receiving member, so that the generation of said pressure differential causes fluid flow from at least one of each of said containers to said at least one liquid receiving member.
- 17. The device of claim 16, wherein said holder seals said first pressure chamber from said second pressure chamber.
- 18. The device of claim 16, wherein said first pressure chamber is in fluid communication with the ambient environment and said second pressure chamber is selectively sealable from the ambient environment.
- 19. The device of claim 16, wherein each of the plurality of said liquid dispensing members is a capillary.
- 20. The device of claim 19, wherein said housing contains said holder so that each of said first ends is in said first pressure chamber, and each of said second ends is in said second pressure chamber.
- 21. The device of claim 20, wherein said differential pressure generator is in fluid communication with said second pressure chamber, and wherein the generation of said pressure differential rarefies said second pressure chamber with respect to said first pressure chamber.
- 22. The device of claim 16, further comprising a support, wherein said support is adjacent to the housing and supports a plurality of said liquid receiving members.
- 23. The device of claim 22, wherein said support is movable relative to said housing to sequentially position said liquid receiving members in said housing, one said liquid receiving member at a time.
- 24. The device of claim 16, wherein said second pressure chamber contains said at least one liquid receiving member, and further comprising a positioning device within said second pressure chamber to position said at least one liquid receiving member.
- 25. The device of claim 24, wherein said positioning device comprises a movable element having a gripping end.
- 26. A device for dispensing liquid, comprising:
a holder having a plurality of liquid dispensing members mounted therein, each of the plurality of said liquid dispensing members comprising a container between a first and a second ends of said liquid dispensing member; at least one liquid receiving member; a housing defining a first pressure chamber and a second pressure chamber; a differential pressure generator connected to at least one of said first and second pressure chambers, wherein said differential pressure generator can generate a pressure differential between said first and second pressure chambers, and wherein said housing contains said holder and said liquid receiving member, so that the generation of said pressure differential causes fluid flow from at least one of each of said containers to said at least one liquid receiving member; wherein each of the plurality of said liquid dispensing members is a capillary; wherein said housing contains said holder, so that each of said first ends is in said first pressure chamber and each of said second ends is in said second pressure chamber, wherein said differential pressure generator is in fluid communication with said second pressure chamber; and wherein said differential pressure generator comprises a movable member to alter the pressure within said second pressure chamber.
- 27. The device of claim 26, wherein said movable member seals the second pressure chamber from the ambient environment.
- 28. The device of claim 26, wherein said movable member comprises a flexible member.
- 29. The device of claim 28, wherein said flexible member is between a pair of movable plates.
- 30. A device for dispensing liquid, comprising:
a housing comprising a first pressure chamber and a second pressure chamber, wherein said housing comprises a holder with a plurality of liquid dispensing members, wherein each of the plurality of said liquid dispensing members has a first end exposed to said first pressure chamber and a second end exposed to said second pressure chamber; at least one liquid receiving member in said second pressure chamber; and a differential pressure generator connected to at least one of said first and second pressure chambers, wherein said differential pressure generator can generate a pressure differential between said first and second pressure chambers, and wherein said second pressure chamber is rarefied with respect to said first pressure chamber when said pressure differential is generated to cause a liquid in said liquid dispensing members to flow to said at lest one liquid receiving member.
- 31. The device of claim 30, wherein said differential pressure generator comprises a member that seals said second pressure chamber from the ambient environment.
- 32. The device of claim 30, wherein said differential pressure generator comprises a flexible member.
- 33. The device of claim 30, further comprising a support for a plurality of liquid receiving members and said support is adjacent to said housing.
- 34. The device of claim 30, wherein each of the plurality of liquid dispensing members comprises a capillary.
- 35. A method of dispensing liquid from a plurality of liquid dispensing members to a receiving plate, the method comprising:
positioning a plurality of liquid dispensing members into a dispensing device, wherein said dispensing device comprises a first pressure chamber and a second pressure chamber, so that a first end of each said liquid dispensing members is contained in said first pressure chamber and a second end of each said liquid dispensing members is contained in said second pressure chamber; positioning a receiving plate in said second pressure chamber, wherein said receiving plate is positioned to receive liquid flow from said liquid dispensing members; and creating a pressure differential between said first and second pressure chambers, so that fluid flow is established from said liquid dispensing members to said receiving plate upon said creating a pressure differential.
- 36. The method of claim 35, further comprising: sealing said first pressure chamber from said second pressure chamber.
- 37. The method of claim 36, wherein said sealing includes positioning a holder of the plurality of said liquid dispensing members between said first pressure chamber and said second pressure chamber.
- 38. The method of claim 35, wherein said first pressure chamber is exposed to an environment, and further comprising sealing said second pressure chamber from said environment prior to said creating a pressure differential.
- 39. The method of claim 35, wherein each of the plurality of said dispensing members is a capillary, wherein the first end of each of said capillaries is an open top end, and wherein the second end of each of said capillaries is an open bottom end.
- 40. A method of dispensing liquid from a plurality of liquid dispensing members to a receiving plate, the method comprising:
positioning a plurality of liquid dispensing members into a dispensing device, wherein said dispensing device comprises a first pressure chamber and a second pressure chamber, so that a first end of each said liquid dispensing members is contained in said first pressure chamber and a second end of each said liquid dispensing members is contained in said second pressure chamber; positioning a receiving plate in said second pressure chamber, wherein said receiving plate is positioned to receive liquid flow from said liquid dispensing members; creating a pressure differential between said first and second pressure chambers, so that fluid flow is established from said liquid dispensing members to said receiving plate upon rarefying said second pressure chamber with respect to said first pressure chamber.
- 41. The method of claim 40, wherein said rarefying said second pressure chamber comprises a volume expansion within said second pressure chamber.
- 42. The method of claim 41, wherein said volume expansion comprises moving a movable member.
- 43. A method of dispensing liquid from a plurality of liquid dispensing members to a receiving plate, the method comprising:
positioning a plurality of liquid dispensing members into a dispensing device, wherein said dispensing device comprises a first pressure chamber and a second pressure chamber, so that a first end of each said liquid dispensing members is contained in said first pressure chamber and a second end of each said liquid dispensing members is contained in said second pressure chamber; positioning a receiving plate in said second pressure chamber, wherein said receiving plate is positioned to receive liquid flow from said liquid dispensing members; creating a pressure differential between said first and second pressure chambers, so that fluid flow is established from said liquid dispensing members to said receiving plate upon said creating a pressure differential; and equalizing pressures between said first and second pressure chambers subsequent to said creating a pressure differential.
- 44. The method of claim 43, further comprising:
removing said receiving plate from said second pressure chamber; and repeating said positioning a receiving plate, said creating a pressure differential, and said equalizing pressure to dispense liquid to a subsequent receiving plate.
