Claims
- 1. A device containing encapsulated cells or tissue for implanting into a host comprising:(a) a substantially non-degradable filamentous cell-supporting matrix, wherein the matrix comprises a plurality of monofilaments twisted into yarn that is in non-woven strands, and the cells or tissue are distributed thereon; and (b) a semi-permeable membrane encapsulating the matrix.
- 2. The device of claim 1, wherein the filamentous cell-supporting matrix comprises a biocompatible material selected from the group consisting of acrylic, polyester, polyethylene, polypropylene polyacetonitrile, polyethylene terephthalate, nylon, polyamides, polyurethanes, polybutester, silk, cotton, chitin, carbon, and biocompatible metals.
- 3. The device of claim 1, wherein the matrix forms a cylinder.
- 4. The device of claim 3, wherein the cylinder comprises a hollow cylinder.
- 5. The device of claim 3, wherein the cylinder comprises a solid cylinder.
- 6. The device of claim 1, wherein the cells or tissue produce a biologically active molecule selected from the group consisting of neurotransmitters, hormones, cytokines, lymphokines, enzymes, biological response modifiers, growth factors, and trophic factors.
- 7. The device of claim 1, wherein the cells or tissue provide metabolic function.
- 8. The device of claim 7, wherein the metabolic function is the removal of harmful substances.
