Claims
- 1. In a dual timing mode ignition system: a supply of electrical energy; a first set of breaker contacts, and a first ignition coil having a primary winding connected in series with said first set of breaker contacts and said supply of electrical energy to define a first series circuit; a second set of breaker contacts having a different opening time than said first set of breaker contacts, and a second ignition coil having a primary winding connected in series with said second set of breaker contacts and said supply of electrical energy to define a second series circuit; means for preventing preignition during changeover between timing modes, comprising first switching means comprising a first thyristor, connected in series with said first set of breaker contacts and said supply of electrical energy and said first ignition coil, and operable for cyclically open-circuiting and closing the first series circuit to energize and de-energize said primary winding, second switching means comprising a second thyristor, connected in series with said second set of breaker contacts and said supply of electrical energy and said second ignition coil, and operable for cyclically open-circuiting and closing the second series circuit to energize and de-energize said primary winding; and means for selectively operating said first and second switching means to conduct to selectively (a) continuously close both of the series circuits thereby enabling the opening and closing of the first and second sets of breaker contacts to control timing of energization of said coils in a first ignition mode and (b) continuously close one of the series circuits thereby enabling the opening and closing of the corresponding set of breaker contacts to control the timing of the ignition system in a second ignition mode.
- 2. A dual timing mode ignition system, comprising: a first series supply circuit including a first ignition coil having a primary winding and a first set of breaker contacts serially connected to said primary winding; a second series supply circuit including a second ignition coil having a primary winding and a second set of breaker contacts serially connected to said primary winding of said second ignition coil, said first and second sets of breaker contacts having different opening times; means for preventing preignition during changeover between timing modes comprising a thyristor connected in a respective one of said first and second series supply circuits; and means for applying a firing signal to said thyristor in accordance with the mode of operation of an associated engine, to enable conduction of said thyristor to effectuate a first ignition mode determined by said first and second sets of breaker contacts, and the ignition system operating in a second ignition mode determined by the other one of said first and second sets of breaker contacts.
- 3. In a dual timing mode ignition system of the type including a first ignition coil having a primary winding, and a first set of breaker contacts in series with the primary winding of said first ignition coil, said first set of breaker contacts opening and closing to control current flow through the primary winding of said first ignition coil to establish a first ignition mode; and a second ignition coil having a primary winding, and a second set of breaker contacts having opening times different from the opening times of said first set of breaker contacts and in series with the primary winding of said second ignition coil for controlling current flow through the primary winding of said second ignition coil to establish a second ignition mode different from the first ignition mode; the improvement which comprises: a thyristor for preventing preignition during changeover between timing modes in series with the primary winding of said first ignition coil and said first set of breaker contacts for receiving a firing signal to render said thyristor conductive to change ignition mode by flowing current through said first ignition coil, and thereafter remain in the conductive state even in the absence of the firing signal until said first set of breaker contacts open to interrupt the flow of current through said ignition coil thereby to prevent preignition during changeover between timing modes.
