Claims
- 1. A device for detaching a suspension assembly, adapted to support a head, staked to an actuator arm of an actuator block of a disc drive comprising:
an expandable device operable between an insertion dimension and a deswaging dimension, said expandable device including a flanged end defining a deswaging surface, in the insertion dimension, the device being sized for insertion through channels of tubular stakes; and, in the deswaging dimension, said diameter of said device being sized so that the deswaging surface of the flanged end aligns with an end surface of a stake for removing the stake from an actuator block.
- 2. The device of claim 1 wherein the expandable device includes:
a hollow, cylindrical rod having a central channel therethrough, the member having at least one slit therealong adapted to allow the member to expand between the insertion dimension and the deswaging dimension.
- 3. The device of claim 2 wherein the cylindrical rod includes a plurality of spaced slits along a portion of the length thereof.
- 4. In combination:
an expandable device operable between an insertion dimension and a deswaging dimension for removing a suspension assembly staked to an actuator arm of an actuator block of a disc drive, said expandable device including a flanged end defining a deswaging surface, in the insertion dimension, the device being sized for insertion through channels of tubular stakes; and, in the deswaging dimension, said diameter of said device being sized so that the deswaging surface of the flanged end aligns with an end surface of a stake for removing the stake from an actuator block; an actuating device adapted to expand the expandable device between the insertion dimension and the deswaging dimension; and a biasing member adapted to provide a biasing force to the actuator arm to counteract a deswaging force of the expandable device selectively supplied to the end surface of the stake.
- 5. An apparatus for detaching a suspension assembly, adapted to support a head, staked to an actuator arm of an actuator block of a disc drive comprising:
a base; a support block adapted to detachably support an actuator block; an expandable device operable between an insertion dimension and a deswaging dimension, said expandable device including a flanged end defining a deswaging surface, in the insertion dimension, the device being sized for insertion through channels of tubular stakes; and, in the deswaging dimension, said diameter of said device being sized so that the deswaging surface of the flanged end aligns with an end surface of the stake for removing the stake from an actuator arm; an actuating device adapted to expand the expandable device between the insertion dimension and the deswaging dimension; and a drive assembly operably coupled to the expandable device, adapted to move the expandable device between a first position and a second position in the deswaging dimension to force the stake from a hole of an actuator arm.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the expandable device is a cylindrical rod having a central channel therethrough and the actuator device is a cylindrical-shaped rod sized for insertion into the central channel to expand the expandable device.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 and including a biasing member adapted to provide a biasing force to the actuator arm reactive to a deswaging force supplied to the end surface of the stake to facilitate movement of the stake relative to the actuator arm.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the biasing member includes a plurality of prongs sized for insertion through holes of a mounting plate supporting a stake for contacting the actuator arm.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 5 and including a reference member, said reference member adapted to provide a reference position for alignment of the flanged end of the expandable device relative to an end surface of the stake coupled to a selected actuator arm.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the support block is movably supported relative to the reference member for alignment of selected actuator arms relative to the reference member.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 6 and further including a drive assembly operably coupled to the actuator rod adapted to move actuator rod between a retracted position and an extended position for expanding the expandable device.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the drive assembly operably coupled to the expandable device includes a stroke rod adapted to move the expandable device between the first position and the second position in the deswaging dimension to force stake from the hole of the actuator arm.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the stroke rod is supported by a block slidably coupled to the base to move the stroke rod in and out of alignment with the expandable device for operation.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the stroke rod is adapted to align the flanged end of the expandable device relative to a reference member operably coupled to the base for operation.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 and including a calibration member for aligning the stroke rod to position the expandable device relative to the reference member for operation, the calibration member comprising:
an externally-threaded rod having an internally-threaded bore, said externally-threaded rod being movably supported relative to a threaded through bore of a support block for adjusting the position of the calibration member, and the stroke rod being externally threaded for cooperation with the internally-threaded bore for operating the stroke rod to move the expandable device between the first and second positions.
- 16. The deswaging apparatus of claim 15 wherein the stroke rod includes a control pin supported in axial alignment with a stroke slot for defining the stroke of the stroke rod for moving the expandable device between the first and second positions.
- 17. A method for detaching a suspension assembly adapted to support a head, staked to an actuator arm of an actuator block, comprising the steps of:
providing an expandable device operable between an insertion dimension and a deswaging dimension, said expandable device including a flanged end defining a deswaging surface in the insertion dimension, the device being sized for insertion through channels of tubular stakes; and, in the deswaging dimension, said diameter of said device being sized so that the deswaging surface of the flanged end aligns with an end surface of the stake for removing the stake from an actuator block; inserting the expandable device through stakes of an actuator arm to align the deswaging surface with an end surface of a stake to be removed; expanding the expandable device from the insertion dimension to the deswaging dimension; and moving the expandable device to force the stake from the actuator arm.
- 18. The method of claim 17 and further comprising:
aligning an actuator arm relative to a reference member prior to insertion of the expandable device.
- 19. The method of claim 18 and further comprising:
calibrating a position of the flanged end of the expandable device relative to the reference member prior to operation.
- 20. The method of claim 18 wherein multiple stakes are detached from multiple actuator arms and comprising:
selectively aligning multiple actuator arms relative to the reference member.
