Claims
- 1. A device for determining when a degree of deterioration of a catalyst of a catalytic converter arranged in an internal combustion engine exhaust system is abnormal, comprising:
- first purification ability grasping means for grasping a first purification ability of said catalyst when said catalyst is in a complete activation condition;
- second purification ability grasping means for grasping a second purification ability of said catalyst when said catalyst is in an incomplete activation condition;
- first provisional determining means for determining provisionally whether the degree of deterioration of said catalyst is abnormal by comparing said first purification ability and a first predetermined threshold;
- second provisional determining means for determining provisionally whether the degree of deterioration of said catalyst is abnormal by comparing said second purification ability and a second predetermined threshold; and
- main determining means for determining whether the degree of deterioration of said catalyst is abnormal based on the results of the comparisons performed by said first and second provisional determining means.
- 2. A device according to claim 1, wherein said first purification ability grasping means grasps said first purification ability on the basis of a plurality of purification abilities grasped when the catalyst is in the complete activation condition.
- 3. A device according to claim 1, wherein said second purification ability grasping means grasps said second purification ability on the basis of a plurality of purification abilities grasped when the catalyst is in the incomplete activation condition.
- 4. A device according to claim 1, wherein said first and second purification ability grasping means have a detecting means for detecting an O.sub.2 storage ability of said catalyst, and grasp said first and second purification abilities of said catalyst on the basis of said O.sub.2 storage ability.
- 5. A device according to claim 1, wherein said first and second purification ability grasping means have a detecting means for detecting a HC purification ability of said catalyst, and grasp said first and second purification abilities of said catalyst on the basis of said HC purification ability.
