Claims
- 1. A device for displaying indicia comprising:
- (a) at least one cover member having at least one visual display means disposed at a predetermined location on at least one surface thereof; and
- (b) a display member having at least one surface extending substantially parallel to the one surface of said at least one cover member and being of a predetermined configuration, said display member being movable in at least two directions with respect to said at least one cover member within a predetermined area having said predetermined configuration and underlying said at least one cover member, the at least two directions being disposed at an angle to one another and extending substantially parallel to the surface of the display member, said display member and said predetermined area having an uppermost and lowermost portion with respect to each of a plurality of predetermined orientations of said device and said display member being maintained within said predetermined area so as to prevent substantial rotation of said display member relative to said at least one cover member within said predetermined area, said display member having a number of locations on the at least on surface thereof at least equal to the number of predetermined orientations, each of said locations being suitable for receiving at least one indicium and at least one indicum being applied to at least one of said locations, a different one of said locations being in registry with at least one of said visual display means when said device is positioned in a a different one of the plurality of predetermined orientations in a substantially vertical plane with the lowermost portion of the display member adjacent the lowermost portion of the predetermined area underlying said at least one cover member, said locations being of a size and orientation upon said display member that a rotation from a first predetermined orientation of said device in said vertical plane to at least on other predetermined orientation causes said display member to shift position in one of the at least two directions with respect to said at least one cover member, by gravity and gravity alone, until another lowermost portion of said display member is adjacent another lowermost portion of the predetermined area thereby automatically causing one location to be removed from registry with said visual display means and another location to be in registry with said visual display means.
- 2. The device of claim 1 wherein said predetermined area and said display member are in the shape of polygons, said display member being smaller in size than said predetermined area.
- 3. The device of claim 1 wherein said predetermined area is square.
- 4. The device of claim 3 wherein said display member is a square having smaller side dimensions than said square predetermined area.
- 5. The device of claim 1 wherein said display means is at least one aperture.
- 6. The device of claim 1 wherein said predetermined area and said display member are in the shape of a triangle.
- 7. The device of claim 1 wherein said display means is made of a prismatic translucent material, thereby allowing viewing of the locations when said device is held at an oblique angle to a line of vision.
- 8. The device of claim 1 wherein said device comprises two display members.
- 9. The device of claim 1 in which said at least one cover member has a plurality of visual display means and said display member has a plurality of locations on the surface thereof suitable for receiving indicia, a first set of said locations on said display member in registry with said visual display means when said device is in the first orientation in a substantially vertical plane, a rotation of said device through a predetermined angle causing said display member to shift by means of gravity with respect to said cover member thereby causing said first set of locations to be removed from registry with said visual display means and causing a second set of said locations to automatically register with the said display means in the second orientation of said device.
- 10. The device of claim 1 wherein said predetermined area underlying said at least one cover member is in the shape of a first polygon having peripheral edge portions and said display member is in the shape of a second polygon having peripheral edges, said second polygon having smaller side dimensions than those of said first polygon, the edge portions of said cover member polygon and the edges of said display member polygon allowing each edge of said display member polygon to freely slide upon a corresponding edge portion of said cover member polygon,
- wherein when said device is oriented in a vertical plane with a first one of any of the edge portions of said cover member polygon being substantially horizontal, and wherein said display member polygon has a corresponding first edge slidably supported by said first edge portion of said cover member polygon, a rotation of said device in a vertical plane through a predetermined angle causes said corresponding first edge of said display member polygon to slide upon said first edge portion of said cover member polygon until one of the adjacent edges of said display member polygon comes in contact with a corresponding adjacent edge portion of said cover member polygon.
- 11. A device for displaying indicia comprising:
- (a) at least one cover member having at least one visual display means disposed at a predetermined location on at least one surface thereof;
- (b) a display member having at least one surface extending substantially parallel to the one surface of said at least one cover member and being of a predetermined configuration, said display member being movable in at least two directions with respect to said at least one cover member within a predetermined area having said predetermined configuration and underlying said at least one cover member, the at least two directions being disposed at an angle to one another and extending substantially parallel to the surface of the display member, said display member and said predetermined area having an uppermost and lowermost portion with respect to any one of a plurality of predetermined positions, said display member being dimensionally smaller than said predetermined area and being maintained therein so as to permit movement of said display member in said at least two directions and prevent substantial rotation of said display member relative to said at least one cover member within said predetermined area, said display member having a number of prepositioned locations on at least one surface thereof at least equal to the member of predetermined orientations, each of said locations being suitable for receiving at least one indicium thereon and at least one indicium being applied to at least one of said locations, a different one of said locations being in registry with at least one of said display means when said device is placed in a different one of a plurality of predetermined positions in a substantially vertical plane with the lowermost portion of the display member adjacent the lowermost portion of the predetermined area underlying said at least one cover member;
- (c) means associated with said at least one cover member for guiding the movement in one of the at least two directions of said display member by gravity within said predetermined area from a first predetermined position to at least one other predetermined position, said other predetermined position corresponding to a predetermined rotation of said device in a substantially vertical plane from said first predetermined position, another lowermost portion of the display member being adjacent another lowermost portion of the predetermined area in the other predetermined position, whereby said locations change registry with said display means upon rotation of said device from predetermined position to predetermined position.
- 12. A device for displaying indicia comprising:
- (a) at least one cover member having at least one visual display means disposed at a predetermined location at least one surface thereof;
- (b) a display member having at least one surface extending substantially parallel to the one surface of said at least one cover member and being slidably movable in at least two directions with respect to said at least one cover member within a predetermined area underlying said at least one cover member, the at least two directions being disposed at an angle to one another and extending substantially parallel to the surface of the display member, said display member and said predetermined area having an uppermost and lowermost portion with respect to any of a plurality of predetermined positions, said predetermined area being in the shape of a first polygon and said display member being in the shape of a second polygon similar to said first polygon but having smaller side dimensions than said first polygon, said second polygon being maintained within said first polygon so as to permit slidable movement of said second polygon in said at least two directions within said first polygon and prevent substantial rotation of said second polygon relative to said at least one cover member within said first polygon, said display member having a number of prepositioned locations at least equal to the number of predetermined positions, each of said locations being suitable for receiving at least one indicium thereon and at least one indicium being applied to at least one of said locations, a different one of said locations being in registry with at least one of said display means when said device is placed in a predetermined position in a substantially vertical plane with the lowermost portion of the display member adjacent the lowermost portion of the predetermined area underlying said at least one cover member; whereby said display member slidably shifts position in one of the at least two directions with respect to said at least one cover member under the force of gravity until another lowermost portion of the display member is adjacent another lowermost portion of the predetermined area in response to rotation of said device in substantially vertical plane to change the registry of said locations with respect to said visual display means.
- 13. A perpetual calender comprising:
- (a) a pair of fixed square cover members, each member having a forty-nine apertures arranged in a 7.times.7 matrix on each surface thereof;
- (b) a square insert slidably movable between said cover members within a square area between said members, said insert having smaller side dimensions than said square area, each surface of said insert comprising an arrangement of weekday indicia and date indicia in a 14.times.14 square matrix, said 14.times.14 square matrix being further comprised of 4 distinct sets of 7 weekday letters and 31 date indicia arranged in four 7.times.7 matrices on one surface of said insert and 3 distinct sets of 7 weekday indicia and 31 date indicia arranged in three 7.times.7 matrices on the opposite surface of said insert, each 7.times.7 matrix corresponding to a month display and regularly appearing in alternate columns of the 14.times.14 square matrix when said insert is positioned in each of four orientations, each orientation corresponding to a position of said insert in a substantially vertical plane with one edge of said insert in an uppermost horizontal line, said 7 weekday indicia occupying the first row of each of said four distinct sets and the date indicia occupying the succeeding rows, wherein the first date integer corresponding to the first day of each month of each distinct set occupies a position in each row of each of said sets under a column headed by different weekday letter, wherein a distinct set of 7 weekday indicia and 31 date indicia registers with said apertures when said device is held in a substantially vertical plane, said insert slidably shifting position with respect to said cover members under the force of gravity to effect a different monthly display through said apertures in response to stepwise rotation of said device in a substantially vertical plane, each step of said rotation corresponding to about 90.degree. .
- 14. A yearly calender comprising:
- (a) a pair of fixed square cover members, each member having forty-nine apertures arranged in a 7.times.7 matrix on each surface thereof;
- (b) a square insert slidably movable between said cover members within a square area between said members, said insert having smaller side dimensions than said square area such that said insert is substantially prevented from rotating relative to said cover members, each surface of said insert comprising an arrangement of weekday indicia and date indicia in a 14.times.14 square matrix, said 14.times.14 square matrix being further comprised of 1 distinct set of 7 weekday indicia and date indicia and 3 distinct sets of date indicia, each set being arranged in a 7.times.7 matrix, each 7.times.7 matrix regularly appearing in alternate columns of the 14.times.14 square matrix when said insert is positioned in each of four orientations, each orientation corresponding to a position of said insert in a substantially vertical plane with one side in an uppermost horizontal line, each surface of said insert covering a 6 month period of year, wherein the distinct set of 7 weekday indicia and date indicia on one side of said insert corresponds to the month of January, the remaining date integers in said set and the remaining date integers in the succeeding 3 distinct sets of date indicia on said side of said insert occupying the rows and columns of said sets up to a date indicia corresponding to June 30, and wherein the distinct set of weekday indicia and date indicia on the opposite side of said insert corresponds to the month of July, the remaining date indicia in said set and the remaining date integers in the succeeding 3 distinct sets of date indicia on said opposite side of said insert occupying the rows of columns of said set up to a date indicia corresponding to December 31, whereby positioning one side of said device in a substantially vertical plane to display the month of January at said apertures and rotating said device in 90.degree. steps clockwise provides a continuous calender display of dates corresponding to from January 1 to June 30 of said year and positioning the opposite side of said device in a substantially vertical plane to display the month of July at said apertures and rotating said device in 90.degree. steps clockwise provides a continuous calender display of dates from July 1 to December 31.
- 15. A device for displaying indicia comprising:
- (a) a cover member having at least one window therein disposed in a predetermined format on one surface thereof;
- (b) a backing member disposed in facing relationship adjacent the other surface of the cover member to form a pocket therebetween having a predetermined configuration; and
- (c) a display member independent of the cover member and the backing member having at least one surface extending substantially parallel to the one surface of the cover member and being disposed in the pocket between the cover member and the backing member, said display member being of said predetermined configuration and being of a size smaller than the size of said pocket so as to permit slidable movement of said display member in at least two predetermined directions disposed at an angle to one another within said pocket and prevent substantial rotation of said display member in said pocket, the at least two predetermined directions being disposed at an angle to one another and extending substantially parallel to the surface of the display member, the display member having a number of locations disposed on the surface thereof adjacent the cover member in a predetermined format corresponding to the predetermined format of the at least one window, each of said locations being suitable for receiving at least one indicium and at least one of said locations having at least one indicium thereon, one of said locations being exposed in registry with the window in the predetermined format corresponding thereto when the device is positioned in any of a plurality of predetermined orientations with the pocket disposed in a substantially vertical plane and a direction of movement of the display member extends vertically, the number of locations being at least equal to the number of orientations, the display member being adapted in a first predetermined orientation to slidably move vertically downward until the display member reaches the bottom of the pocket, the device having a second predetermined orientation with the pocket disposed in a substantially vertical plane and another direction of movement of the display member extending vertically, the display member in the second predetermined orientation being adapted to slidably move vertically downward until the display member is in the bottom of the pocket, the locations being of a size and orientation in the predetermined format upon the display member that upon rotation of the device from the first predetermined orientation to the second predetermined orientation and the slidable downward movement of the display member, one location is removed from being exposed in registry with the window and a second location is moved into registry with the window.
- 16. The device of claim 15 in which the cover member has a plurality of windows and the display member has a plurality of sets of locations on the surface thereof, each set being in a different predetermined format each of which corresponds to the predetermined format of the windows, the first set of locations on the display member being in registry with the plurality of windows when the device is in the first orientation, and in which a rotation of the device to the second predetermined orientation enables the display member to shift with respect to the cover member thereby causing the first set of locations to be removed from registry with the windows and causing the second set of locations to register with the windows in the second orientation.
