Device for handling wood and/or burning embers

Abstract

The use of two stationary bars and a moveable sliding and rotating center bar to cradle and clamp at three points, burning wood and/or embers while repositioning them within a fireplace or campfire. The opening and closing of the jaws being accomplished by the forward or backward sliding motion achieved by pulling the center bar back or pushing it forward with the hand located on the back handle.

BACKGROUNG OF INVENTION

[0004] The invention resides in the general field of handling hot objects such as burning embers in wood burning fireplaces and campfires. Heretofore devices for this purpose have consisted of pokers, used to push the burning wood or hot embers around in the fireplace or campfire, or various devices requiring two hands to operate with single or multiple pivot points and linkages simulating sissor action to grab and lift or move the burning wood or ember. These types of tools are difficult to use and don't adequately control the burning wood or embers during movement.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0005] One object of the invention is to provide a tool that will capture and control the movement of the burning wood or ember as it is moved and/or relocated within the fireplace or campfire.

[0006] Another is the ease of operation to open and close the capture mechanism with one hand.

[0007] Also the ability to lift and move easily, a large piece of wood within the fireplace or campfire from a distance while standing erect.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE SEVERAL VIEWS OF THE DRAWING

[0008] The drawing labeled FIG. 1 shows a side view of the tool consisting of; two stationary bars labeled 1 and 2, a moveable linkage comprised of two bars labeled 3 and 4, pivot points A and B for the moveable linkage, slide point C, one wooden handle attached to the bars a mid point on the tool and a wooden handle at the end of the stationary bars. FIG. 1 also contains a section view of the slide point C, showing the stationary bars and connecting pin in relation to the moving slotted bar #4.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0009] In the drawing FIG. 1 item #1 and #2 are stationary bars which are connected together by the right and left handles, and the two pins located at pivot point “A” and slide point “C”. Center bar item #4 has a 1⅛ inch slot cut in the center of its depth and is connected to item #3 a bar with curved ends at pivot point “B” by a steel pin forming a single bar that has a moveable end. Item #3 and #4 are connected to the stationary bars #1 And #2 by mounting in between bars #1 and #2 and being connected at pivot point “A” and slide point “C” by the connecting pins running through bar #1, #2, #3, and #4. This allows item #3 and #4 to move between the stationary bars #1 and #2 by sliding bar item #4 longitudinally along bars #2 and #1. Bar item #3 rotates at pivot point “A” allowing the bar #3 to open and close in relation to bars #1 and #2. This creates a grabbing effect with regard to objects inserted between the moveable and stationary bars. Backward motion of bar item#4 by closing with the backhand closes the jaws. Forward motion with the backhand opens the jaws. The trigger loop at the end of item #4 allows the forward motion to be accomplished by the back hand. When burning wood or embers are positioned between the jaws and bar item #4 moved back, pressure is exerted between bar item #3 and bars items #1 and #2 thus holding the burning wood and/or embers in position. While holding the front wooden handle in one hand and the back wooden handle in the other hand and pulling back on bar #4 one can lift and control hot burning embers while moving them within the fireplace or campfire.

Claims

1. What we claim as our invention is a device held with one hand and activated with the other hand to grab, using a three point contact, objects such as burning wood, from within a hot fireplace or campfire for the purpose of moving the object. The tool comprising: a. Two stationary bars used to cradle the objects being moved. b. A sliding bar actuating the rotation of a linked bar with curved ends to capture and hold against the stationary bars. c. The trigger loop used in conjunction with the slot and pin action allowing controlled opening and closing of the jaws through the movement of one hand.
