Claims
- 1. An implantable device comprising a material having a precipitate enhancing roughened surface, before coating with an average peak distance between 10 nm and 1,000 nm and having an average depth, wherein the roughened surface is coated in vitro with a layer of a precipitate comprising calcium ions, phosphate ions, and an organic biologically active agent wherein at least a portion of the layer has a thickness greater than the average depth of the roughened surface.
- 2. The implantable device according to claim 1, wherein the organic biologically active agent is selected from the group consisting of growth factors, lipids, (lipo)polysaccharides, cytostatic agents, hormones, antibiotics, proteins, and mixtures thereof.
- 3. The implantable device according to claim 1, wherein the roughened surface, before coating, has an average depth between about 20 nm and about 2,000 nm.
- 4. The implantable device according to claim 1, wherein the layer has a thickness of about 50 nm to about 200 .mu.m.
- 5. The implantable device according to claim 1, wherein the material is selected from the group consisting of a metal, a metal alloy, a ceramic material, a natural or synthetic polymer and a composite thereof.
- 6. A method of implanting a member selected from the group consisting of a bone substitute, a joint prosthesis, a dental implant, a maxillofacial implant, a vertebral surgery aid, and a transcutaneous device, comprising implanting a device according to claim 1.
- 7. The implantable device according to claim 1 wherein the layer is an amorphous crystalline layer.
- 8. The implantable device according to claim 1 wherein the layer comprises calcium ions and phosphate ions and one or more ions selected from the group consisting of hydroxide, chloride, sulphate, and nitrate anions and hydrogen, sodium, potassium and magnesium cations.
- 9. The implantable device according to claim 1 wherein the layer does not comprise hydroxyapatite.
- 10. The implantable device according to claim 5 wherein the metal is titanium or tantalum and the metal alloy is a titanium alloy.
