The invention relates to a device for ironing laundry items comprising at least one ironer roll which is drivable in a circumferential manner and an ironer chest assigned to the ironer roll, wherein an outer surface of the ironer roll is provided with a spiral wrapping, and a device for ironing laundry items comprising at least one ironer body and at least one ironer belt which is assigned to the at least one ironer body and which is drivable in a circumferential manner.
Laundry items are smoothed out and subjected to final drying by ironing. The ironing process is primarily carried out in commercial laundries using devices of different construction. The invention relates to devices which are configured as chest ironers or belt ironers.
Chest ironers have one or even a plurality of successive cylindrical ironer rolls which are rotatably drivable and an ironer chest which is fixedly assigned to one or each of the ironer rolls. Preferably, the respective ironer chest is configured to be resilient in order to be able to be adapted in a flexible manner to the respective ironer roll.
Belt ironers have at least one ironer body which may be stationary or even rotatably drivable. Even in belt ironers, rotatably drivable ironer bodies are also configured to be cylindrical. In the case of belt ironers the fixed ironer bodies may have any type of cross section. At least one ironer belt which is drivable in a circumferential manner is assigned to the single ironer body or all of the ironer bodies of the belt ironer. The ironer belt serves for the transport of laundry items to be ironed, respectively along or around the respective ironer body. Moreover, the ironer belt presses the laundry items to be ironed against the respective ironer body.
In the known devices, spiral wrappings of ironer rolls for chest ironers or even ironer belts are formed from felt, in particular non-woven felt fabric. In the case of chest ironers, springs made of metal material are generally also provided between the spiral wrapping made of felt and/or non-woven felt fabric and the cylindrical outer surface of the ironer roll. In the case of ironer belts, the felt and/or non-woven felt fabric may be provided with reinforcing strands which stabilize the ironer belt such that it does not excessively stretch.
Known ironer belts of belt ironers and spiral wrappings of chest ironers alter their shape over time by becoming distorted and/or compressed and as a result gradually become thinner. The quality of the ironing is consequently impaired so that in the case of known chest ironers the spiral wrappings and/or ironer belts have only a limited service life and as a result have to be replaced at regular intervals.
The object of the invention is to provide devices for ironing laundry items, the spiral wrapping and/or ironer belt thereof having improved stability.
This object is achieved by a device for ironing laundry items comprising at least one ironer roll which is drivable in a circumferential manner and an ironer chest assigned to the ironer roll, wherein an outer surface of the ironer roll is provided with a spiral wrapping, characterized in that the spiral wrapping has a base layer made of links which are interlinked or suspended together and at least one non-woven fabric layer which is connected to the base layer. Accordingly, it is provided that the spiral wrapping of the at least one ironer roll has a base layer consisting of links which are connected together, preferably interlinked or suspended together, and at least one non-woven fabric layer connected to the base layer.
The aforementioned object is also achieved by a device for ironing laundry items comprising at least one ironer body and at least one ironer belt which is assigned to the at least one ironer body and which is drivable in a circumferential manner, characterized in that the ironer belt has a base layer made of links which are interlinked or suspended together and at least one non-woven fabric layer which is connected to the base layer. This device is characterized by an ironer belt which has a base layer made of links which are interlinked or suspended together and at least one non-woven fabric layer connected to the base layer.
In both devices it is provided that the spiral wrapping and/or ironer belt has a base layer with a plurality of links which are suspended together and at least one non-woven fabric layer which is connected to the base layer. Forming the base layer from links which are suspended together and/or interlinked results in a three-dimensional reinforcement of the non-woven fabric layer connected to the base layer. Due to the links being suspended together the base layer is exceptionally flexible, whereby it is able to fit snugly against the ironer roll and/or the ironer body continuously and without gaps. In addition, the ironer belt also serves as a conveyor belt and, in particular, also has to be deflected around smaller radii. Due to its configuration of links which are suspended together, in particular interlinked, the base layer has a relatively high degree of dimensional stability but nevertheless with good flexibility. The result of this is that the at least one ironer spiral wrapping and/or the ironer belt comprising such a base layer changes shape significantly less than conventional spiral wrappings of ironer rolls or ironer belts. As a result, the spiral wrappings and/or ironer belts according to the invention have a longer service life and do not need to be replaced as frequently.
Both devices and/or ironers comprising a spiral wrapping or an ironer belt, which have a base layer made of connected links and a non-woven fabric layer connected to the base layer, may have a width of over 5 m due to this construction of the spiral wrapping and/or the ironer belt.
Preferably, the respective base layer has a plurality of links which are preferably of equal configuration and which are arranged for the comb-like engagement of the end regions of adjacent links relative to one another. Due to this comb-like engagement of adjacent links, the links may be interlinked in a simple manner to form the base layer.
A preferred embodiment of the base layer provides that the links are connected together in an articulated manner at points where they interlock in a comb-like manner. Such articulated connections between the adjacent links lead to a particularly flexible and thus adaptable base layer. The links may also permit a simple and permanent connection of the base layer to the at least one non-woven fabric layer.
In the case of base layers comprising links which are able to be brought into engagement with one another in a comb-like manner, according to a preferred embodiment of the invention the links are interlinked by elongated rod-like connectors. Preferably, the connectors extend transversely to the circumferential direction of the spiral wrapping and/or the transport direction of the ironer belt. In this case, it is particularly advantageous if the rod-like connectors run at right-angles to the circumferential direction of the spiral wrapping and/or transport direction of the ironer belt. In this arrangement, the rod-like connectors are not subjected to any deformation when the base layer is curved by, for example, deflections and/or is altered in terms of curvature in the circumferential direction of the spiral wrapping and/or transport direction of the ironer belt.
It is preferably provided to form a row of links which adjoin one another in the transverse direction of the ironer belt or the spiral wrapping and which are made from strands which are wound in a helical and/or spiral manner. This winding is preferably carried out in the manner of a helical spring, the longitudinal direction thereof running transversely preferably at right-angles to the circumferential direction of the spiral wrapping and/or running direction of the ironer belt. Such links may be formed cost-effectively and provide the base layer with a high degree of stability. Above all, the shape of the links may influence the thickness and thus the stability of the base layer. Thus, a plurality of links of any size and shape located in a row may be produced simultaneously in one operating process and a base layer with the desired thickness and stability may be formed therefrom.
The links may have an oval-shaped path, viewed in the longitudinal direction of their axis of articulation. Such links spatially encompass a three-dimensional intermediate space, free space and/or internal space. It may be provided to fill up this intermediate space, free space and/or internal space entirely or partially with at least one filling body. At least one filling body may be assigned to each link, but also to only a few selected links, for example each second link of the successive links. The filling bodies are preferably formed from a dimensionally stable material. The filling bodies may be resilient, in particular resiliently flexible. It is conceivable to configure the filling bodies to be air-permeable and/or electrically conductive. The filling bodies make it possible to stabilize the base layer and to provide improved air-permeability of the base layer. Moreover, the filling bodies may also contribute to the base layer being electrically conductive and as a result electrostatic charges of the ironed laundry are avoided or at least reduced.
According to an alternative embodiment of the invention, the links of the base layer are formed from adjacent strands which run in the circumferential direction of the spiral wrapping and/or running direction of the ironer belt and which are preferably alternately interwoven around one or other side of transversely oriented rod-like bars. Such links do not need to be additionally interlinked. Said links are directly interlinked by their formation from adjacent strands running continuously or uninterrupted in the longitudinal direction of the spiral wrapping and/or the ironer belt. In the case of a base layer thus formed, the transversely oriented bars have a further function: they not only subdivide the links which are functionally formed between adjacent bars but also serve to provide a flat zig-zag-shaped path to the longitudinally running adjacent and/or adjoining strands. As a result, a three-dimensional woven mesh is produced from the strands with the bars running transversely thereto at preferably 90°, said woven mesh also forming a base layer of specific thickness, wherein the thickness of the base layer depends on the diameter of the bars.
One advantageous possibility of the connection of the, or the respective, non-woven fabric layer to the base layer is that the non-woven fabric layer extends into the base layer. Alternatively, however, the respective non-woven fabric layer may extend through the entire base layer. If a non-woven fabric layer is assigned to both sides of the base layer, the respective non-woven fabric layer is preferably only connected to that side of the base layer which is assigned the non-woven fabric layer. It is also conceivable, however, that in the case of non-woven fabric layers being assigned to both sides of the base layer, when connecting said non-woven fabric layers to the base layer each non-woven fabric layer extends through the base layer. Then the two opposing sides of the non-woven fabric layers assigned to the base layer overlap in the region of the base layer. This leads to a particularly compact and dimensionally stable spiral wrapping and/or ironer belt without the flexibility of the spiral wrapping and/or the ironer belt being significantly impaired thereby, due to the three-dimensional nature of the base layer. Moreover, since the two non-woven fabric layers on opposing sides of the base layer are also connected together the permanence of the connection of the respective non-woven fabric layer to the base layer is further increased.
It is preferably provided to connect the single non-woven fabric layer to one side of the base layer or both non-woven fabric layers to each side of the base layer by needling, tufting, stitching, or the like. These connection techniques may be carried out rapidly by machine and produce a close connection with the base layer. In the case of a non-woven fabric layer which is arranged on both sides of the base layer, there is also the possibility that the two opposing non-woven fabric layers are also connected together in the region of the base layer located therebetween, optionally by needling, tufting, stitching or the like.
In a preferred embodiment of this ironer belt according to the invention or the spiral wrapping of the ironer according to the invention, the base layer, in particular its links, strands, bars and/or connectors, are formed from plastics material. This increases the flexibility of the spiral wrapping and/or the ironer belt. Moreover, plastics material is resistant to the moisture which is to be substantially removed from the laundry during ironing and not susceptible to corrosion.
It is preferably provided that the base layer is configured to be endless or is made endless. The base layer which is formed from links suspended together and/or connected together provides ideal conditions therefor. Above all, therefore, closed ironer belts and/or spiral wrappings of the ironer are produced without seams and/or transitions. Such ironer belts and/or spiral wrappings leave on the laundry items to be ironed no imprints or other damage which reduces the quality thereof.

A preferably flexibly configured ironer chest 15 is assigned to the ironer roll 11. The ironer chest 15 surrounds approximately the lower half of the ironer roll 11 so that the ironer chest 15 is configured to be semi-circular in cross section. The ironer chest 15 is heatable. To this end in the interior said ironer chest has flow channels for a heating medium, for example steam or thermal oil.
The ironer chest 15 is mounted on opposing longitudinal edges 16 and 17 on a fixed frame 18 of the chest ironer 10. A (right-hand) longitudinal edge 15, viewed in the rotational direction 19 of the ironer roll 11, is fixedly connected to the frame 18 at an inlet side 20 of the chest ironer 10. An outlet side 21 of the chest ironer 10 is located at the opposing (left-hand) longitudinal edge 17 of the ironer chest. The longitudinal edge 17 of the ironer chest 15 is movably mounted on the frame 18 on the outlet side 21 by means of a slightly obliquely positioned pendulum support 22.
The invention is not limited to the above-described chest ironer 10. The invention may alternatively be used for chest ironers 10 of different construction, for example those without a pendulum support 22 and also those which have a rigid ironer chest 15. The ironer body 26 of the belt ironer 25 is heatable. This heating is preferably carried out from the interior of the ironer body 26. The heating of the ironer body 26 in this case may be carried out using any heat transfer medium.
The ironer belt 28 is guided at an inlet side 29 over the ironer body 26 onto said ironer body and diverted from the ironer body 26 in the region of an outlet side 30 in the vicinity of the inlet side 29. At the same time, the ironer belt 28 is driven in the transport direction and/or circumferential direction 34.
The ironer belt 28 is guided in each case on the inlet side 29 and the outlet side 30 by deflection drums 31 and 32, which in each case run parallel to one another and to the longitudinal center axis 12 of the ironer body 26. The ironer belt 28 runs substantially along the circumference of the ironer body 26 from the deflection drum 31 on the inlet side 29 as far as the deflection drum 32 on the outlet side 30. The ironer belt 28 is guided back as a return strand from the deflection drum 32 on the outlet side 30 to the deflection drum 31 on the inlet side 29. At the same time, the return strand of the ironer belt 28 which is spaced apart from the ironer body 26 is guided outwardly around said ironer body, around correspondingly arranged deflection drums 33. At least one of the deflection drums 31, 32 and/or 33 is rotatably drivable for driving the ironer belt 28 in the circumferential direction 34.

The above-described belt ironer 25 has a single stationary ironer body 26. Belt ironers 25 which have a plurality of successive ironer bodies 26 which are the same or different are also conceivable. The laundry items are then moved by the individual ironer belt 28 or even the separate ironer belts 28 in succession along such a belt ironer 25 comprising a plurality of ironer bodies 26.

The ironer belt 28 has a base layer and a non-woven fabric layer at least on one side thereof. The base layer and the non-woven fabric layer are connected together. This connection may be carried out by needling, tufting, linking, stitching or the like.
A plurality of links 37 is arranged with parallel spacing transversely to the circumferential direction 34 of the ironer belt 28 in a row running transversely to the circumferential direction 34 of the ironer belt 28. A plurality of such interlinked rows follow one another in the circumferential direction 34 of the ironer belt 28. The spacings between adjacent links 37 of the same row are approximately of the same size as that of the width of the links. The links 37 of adjacent rows are in each case arranged offset to one another (staggered) by the width of a link. As a result, the links 37 of adjacent rows interlock in a comb-like manner with their end regions facing one another. The end regions of adjacent links 37 which interlock with one another, in particular adjacent rows of adjoining links 37, thus form in each case an axis of articulation 38.
The links 37 are formed in each case from a circumferential endless strand 47. The strand 47 of each link 37 has an approximately oval path. The strands 47 of each base layer 36 have spaced-apart portions 48 running parallel to one another. When the base layer 36 is oriented in a linear manner the portions 48 run in a rectilinear manner. When the base layer 36 is curved the portions 48 of the strands 47 have a correspondingly curved path.
In the case of the base layer 36 the links 37 of adjacent rows are connected in the region of each axis of articulation 38 by a bar-like and/or rod-like connector 39. In the exemplary embodiment shown this connector has a cylindrical cross section but may also have an unround, for example lenticular, cross section. As a result of the axis of articulation 38 running transversely to the circumferential direction 34 of the ironer belt 28, the connectors 39 also extend transversely to the circumferential direction 34 of the ironer belt 28. As a result, the base layer 36 for any given connector 39 has rotary joint-type connections for the links 37 and consequently very high and almost unlimited flexibility. In this manner, the base layer 36 of the ironer belt 28 does not become jammed when deflected on the deflection drums 31, 32 and 33 even if these deflection drums have only a very small diameter. The joint pins 39 for connecting the individual rows of links 37 of the base layer 36 thus result in an unlimited flexibility of the ironer belt 28 in the circumferential direction 34.
If it is desired, the rod-like connectors 39 may be formed from a material which provides the connector 39 with a high degree of stability. Then the base layer 36 has only a small degree of flexibility transversely to the circumferential direction 34 of the ironer belt 28. Should such a flexibility transversely to the circumferential direction 34 not be required and/or not desired, the connectors 39 may be formed from easily bendable rods or even small tubes.

The filling bodies ensure that the spaced-apart portions 48 of the strand 47 of each link 37 maintain their spacing. As a result, the base layer 36 is more air-permeable, in particular if the filling bodies are also porous or perforated. It is conceivable that the filling bodies are formed from an electrically conductive material. Such filling bodies make the base layer 36 electrically conductive in order to avoid or remove an electromagnetic charge of the base layer 36 and/or the spiral wrapping 13 or the ironer belt 28.
The filling bodies may be secured against displacement and/or slipping in the free space between the portions 48 and the connectors 39, in particular by said filling bodies being connected entirely or partially to the portions 48 of the strands 47, for example by adhesive bonding.
In each case, the portions of the base layer 40 defined as links 41 extend between two elongated bars 42 which extend transversely to the circumferential direction 34 of the ironer belt 28, in a similar manner to the connectors 39 of the base layer 36, and which also act as joint pins. In other words, one respective link 41 of the base layer 40 is formed from a portion of the base layer 40 extending between two adjacent parallel bars 42.
The strands 43 extending continuously in the circumferential direction 34 of the ironer belt 28 and adjoining one another in the transverse direction of the ironer belt 28 are placed around the respective bar 42 in a Z-shaped manner, so that the respective strand 43 is guided around one side of a first bar 42 and a further side of the following bar 42. Adjacent strands 43 are alternately guided once upwardly and once downwardly around the respective bar 42. Thus, a strand guided upwardly and downwardly around the respective bar 42 always alternates in the transverse direction of the ironer belt 28. Adjacent strands running parallel to one another intersect at intersections between successive bars 42. As a result, the strands 43 together with the bars 42 form an interwoven structure of the base layer 40.

The base layers 36 and 40 may be configured, in principle, in the same manner for the spiral wrapping 13 of the chest ironer 10 and the ironer belt 28.
In the exemplary embodiments shown of the base layer 36 and the base layer 40, the connectors 39 and the bars 42 are provided with the same diameters and also the spacings of the connectors 39 and/or bars 42 are of equal size. It is conceivable, however, that the diameters of the bars 42 and the spacings thereof in the base layer 40 are different from the spacings of the connectors 39 and the diameters thereof of the base layer 36. For example, the spacings of the bars 42 in the base layer 40 may be smaller than in the base layer 36.
Both the base layer 36 and the base layer 40 are preferably formed from plastics material, in particular a thermoplastic material. It is also conceivable to form the base layers 36 and/or 40 entirely or partially from a different material, for example stainless steel, in particular steel wire.

In the exemplary embodiment shown, a part of the non-woven fabric layer 44 extends through the entire base layer 36 for the connection thereof to the base layer 36. Alternatively, it may also be provided that the non-woven fabric layer 44 is only connected to that side of the base layer 36 which is assigned the non-woven fabric layer 44. The non-woven fabric layer 44 is thus thinner and does not extend through the entire base layer 36 but preferably only through and/or around the upper portions of the links 37.

The partial regions of the non-woven fabric layers 45 protruding over the base layer 40 have in the exemplary embodiment shown a thickness which approximately corresponds to the thickness of the base layer 40. However, different exemplary embodiments are also conceivable, wherein the thicknesses of the part of the non-woven fabric layers 45 protruding relative to the base layer 40 are smaller or larger than the thickness of the base layers.
The upper non-woven fabric layer 45 is connected to portions of the adjoining strands 43 located above a plane which runs through the longitudinal center axes of the strands 43. Accordingly, the lower non-woven fabric layer 45 is only connected to the portions of the successive strands 43 located below the cited plane through the bars 42. At the intersections 46 of the adjacent strands 43 the non-woven fabric layers 45 overlap so that here the non-woven fabric layers 45 are also still connected together. Alternatively, it is conceivable that both non-woven fabric layers 45 are connected to all of the strands 43, in particular adjacent strands 43. Then both of the non-woven fabric layers 45 extend through the entire base layer 40 and overlap one another in the entire region of the base layer 40. This leads to a particularly close connection of the non-woven fabric layers 45 to the base layer 40 and the non-woven fabric layer 45 relative to one another.
