Claims
- 1. A pressurized casting device comprising, in combination:
- a compliant elastomer residual limb sleeve having resilient and elastic properties appropriate for elastically enveloping and closely conforming with a distal portion of a residual limb;
- a tension transfer element connected to a distal end of the residual limb sleeve;
- an elastic annular pressure membrane arranged to at least be selectively pressurized from its exterior for movement radially inwardly towards a closed pressure casting position, the interior of said membrane defining a longitudinally extending annular opening;
- a rigid housing extending longitudinally along and enclosing the exterior of the pressure membrane, the housing interior and membrane exterior defining an airtight chamber, said housing including a residual limb receiving open end;
- a tension connector supported on the housing for engaging the tension transfer element so as to prevent longitudinal movement of the tension transfer element relative to the housing at least in a direction extending towards said residual limb receiving end of said housing when the residual limb sleeve and associated tension transfer element are disposed within the membrane in a casting position;
- said annular membrane arranged to receive therein said residual limb sleeve with a contained residual limb extending in a direction from the residual limb receiving end of the housing towards the tension connector whereat said residual limb sleeve is in a casting position and said tension transfer element is in a position so as to be connected to said tension connector;
- wherein said tension transfer element is an elongate pin and said tension connector comprises a gripper arranged to normally releasably engage the pin in a manner enabling substantially unrestricted one-way movement of the pin relative to the gripper in a direction extending away from the residual limb receiving end of the housing when the residual limb sleeve is in a casting position, and to otherwise lock the pin against longitudinal movement relative to the housing; and
- a gripper release device that releases the gripper from the pin.
- 2. A pressurized casting device as claimed in claim 1, including a tension force sensing device that cooperates with the tension transfer element and senses tension force applied by the tension transfer element to the tension connector.
- 3. A pressurized casting device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said tension connector is slidably connected to one end of the housing for longitudinal movement relative thereto and includes a longitudinal motion stop for positively limiting longitudinal movement of the tension connector relative to the housing in a direction towards the residual limb receiving end of the housing when said residual limb sleeve and said tension connector are in a casting position.
- 4. A pressurized casting device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said gripper is carried by a tension connector support that is longitudinally slidably connected to the housing at the end of the housing opposed to the residual limb receiving end, said tension connector support and housing being coupled for relative longitudinal sliding motion and by a longitudinal movement limiter that limits longitudinal movement of the tension connector support relative to the housing at least in a direction extending towards the residual limb receiving end of the housing.
- 5. A pressurized casting device as claimed in claim 4, including a force sensing device that senses force transmitted by the tension transfer element to the tension connector and generates a signal indicative of such force.
- 6. A pressurized casting device as claimed in claim 5, wherein said tension force sensing device is mounted on said tension connector support.
- 7. A pressurized casting device comprising, in combination:
- a compliant elastomer residual limb sleeve having resilient and elastic properties appropriate for elastically enveloping and closely conforming with a distal portion of a residual limb;
- a tension transfer element connected to a distal end of the residual limb sleeve;
- an elastic annular pressure membrane arranged to at least be selectively pressurized from its exterior for movement radially inwardly towards a closed pressure casting position, the interior of said membrane defining a longitudinally extending annular opening;
- a rigid housing extending longitudinally along and enclosing the exterior of the pressure membrane, the housing interior and membrane exterior defining an airtight chamber, said housing including a residual limb receiving open end;
- a tension connector supported on the housing for engaging the tension transfer element so as to prevent longitudinal movement of the tension transfer element relative to the housing at least in a direction extending towards said residual limb receiving end of said housing when the residual limb sleeve and associated tension transfer element are disposed within the membrane in a casting position;
- said annular membrane arranged to receive therein said residual limb sleeve with a contained residual limb extending in a direction from the residual limb receiving end of the housing towards the tension connector whereat said residual limb sleeve is in a casting position and said tension transfer element is in a position so as to be connected to said tension connector;
- a prosthesis socket pre-form adapted and configured to envelop a distal end portion of said residual limb sleeve with said residual limb sleeve containing a distal portion of a residual limb, wherein said pre-form is configured to fit between said residual limb sleeve and said pressure membrane within said housing;
- said socket pre-form comprising a pre-formed sleeve member comprising a reinforced hardenable compound that is moldable before hardening about the distal end portion of a residual limb covered by a residual limb sleeve; said socket pre-form including at its distal end a prosthesis coupler, said coupler permanently connected to the hardenable compound after hardening thereof and including a longitudinal aperture positioned so as to permit said elongate tension transfer element to extend therethrough when the pre-form is in a molding position.
- 8. A pressurized casting device as claimed in claim 7, wherein said compound is activatable from a moldable to a hardened state by water.
- 9. A pressurized casting device as claimed in claim 7, wherein said socket pre-form comprises inner and outer surface layers formed of fabric that form relatively smooth inner and outer surfaces of said socket pre-form in its hardened molded condition.
- 10. A pressurized casting device as claimed in claim 8, including as a reinforcement tubular braided strands of carbon fiber material and wherein said compound is a polyisocyanate prepolymer resin that is both rendered moldable and activated to its hardened state by water.
- 11. A pressurized casting device as claimed in claim 10, wherein said strands of said web are bias braided in a pattern that causes the tubular web to contract radially when it is distended longitudinally.
- 12. A pressurized casting device as claimed in claim 10, wherein said socket pre-form comprises inner and outer surface layers formed of smooth fabric.
- 13. A pressurized casting device as claimed in claim 7, including a longitudinal motion preventer that prevents longitudinal motion of the prosthesis coupler and the distal end of the socket pre-form relative to the housing in a direction towards the residual limb receiving end of the housing when the socket pre-form is in a casting position.
- 14. A pressurized casting device as claimed in claim 13, wherein said tension transfer element is an elongate pin and said tension connector comprises a gripper arranged to engage the pin in a manner that enables its one-way movement relative to the gripper in a direction extending away from the residual limb receiving end of the housing when the sleeve is in a casting position, and to otherwise lock the pin against longitudinal movement relative to the housing;
- said gripper arranged to normally releasably engage the pin when the pin is coupled to the gripper;
- said gripper being carried by a tension connector support that is connected to the housing at the end of the housing opposed to the residual limb receiving end, said tension connector support and housing being coupled by a longitudinal movement limiter that limits longitudinal movement of the connector support relative to the housing at least in a direction extending towards the residual limb receiving end of the housing.
- 15. A pressurized casting device comprising, in combination:
- a compliant elastomer residual limb sleeve having resilient and elastic properties appropriate for elastically enveloping and closely conforming with a distal portion of a residual limb;
- a tension transfer element connected to a distal end of the residual limb sleeve;
- an elastic annular pressure membrane arranged to at least be selectively pressurized from its exterior for movement radially inwardly towards a closed pressure casting position, the interior of said membrane defining a longitudinally extending annular opening;
- a rigid housing extending longitudinally along and enclosing the exterior of the pressure membrane, the housing interior and membrane exterior defining an airtight chamber, said housing including a residual limb receiving open end;
- a tension connector supported on the housing for engaging the tension transfer element so as to prevent longitudinal movement of the tension transfer element relative to the housing at least in a direction extending towards said residual limb receiving end of said housing when the residual limb sleeve and associated tension transfer element are disposed within the membrane in a casting position;
- said annular membrane arranged to receive therein said residual limb sleeve with a contained residual limb extending in a direction from the residual limb receiving end of the housing towards the tension connector whereat said residual limb sleeve is in a casting position and said tension transfer element is in a position so as to be connected to said tension connector;
- a socket pre-form for enveloping a residual limb extending into the housing from the residual limb receiving end thereof in a casting position;
- said pre-form including a prosthesis coupler non-removably attached to the distal end of the socket pre-form; and
- a motion preventing device that prevents motion of the prosthesis coupler relative to the housing at least in a direction extending towards the residual limb receiving end of the housing when the pre-form and prosthesis coupler are in a casting position.
- 16. A pressurized casting device as claimed in claim 15, wherein said pre-form comprises a pre-formed tubular sleeve member including a reinforcement web impregnated with a moldable and hardenable socket material, said sleeve member being dimensioned to envelop in close conforming relationship said residual limb sleeve containing a residual limb in a casting position; said casting material when molded and hardened forming a structurally rigid load-bearing prosthesis socket and being permanently connected to said prosthesis coupler.
- 17. A pressurized casting device as claimed in claim 15, wherein said motion preventing device includes a securing device that secures the coupler against longitudinal motion relative to the tension connector.
- 18. A pressurized casting device as claimed in claim 17, wherein said tension transfer element comprises an elongated pin extending distally of the distal end area of the residual limb sleeve; said prosthesis coupler including an axially extending aperture; and said elongated pin extending axially through said aperture when said residual limb sleeve is in a casting position.
- 19. Apparatus for forming a definitive prosthesis socket for a residual limb, comprising:
- an elongate housing having an outer wall, an open proximal end for receiving a residual limb distal end portion and a distal end having an end wall including a distal opening;
- an elastic annular pressure membrane extending longitudinally within the housing outer wall to define an interior molding volume within the membrane and a fluid type pressurizing volume between the membrane and the housing outer wall;
- a fluid flow control that is used to selectively admit and discharge a pressurizing fluid medium into and from the pressurizing volume;
- an elongate tension coupler member having a proximal end extendable longitudinally through the housing distal opening into the molding volume;
- said tension coupler member including a releasable gripper at its proximal end engageable with a tension element associated with a residual limb extendable into the molding volume from the proximal end of the housing; and
- a locking device that selectively locks the tension coupler member to the housing against relative movement relative to the housing.
- 20. Apparatus according to claim 19, wherein said distal opening is defined by an annular wall opening and said tension coupler member is extendable through said distal opening in close-fitting, sliding relationship.
- 21. Apparatus according to claim 20, wherein said locking device includes at least one locking element associated with said annular wall opening and a lock cooperating device on the periphery of the tension coupler member and along its length for selectively cooperating with said locking element to selectively lock the tension coupler member against longitudinal movement relative to the annular opening wall when selective lengths of the tension coupler member are inserted through the distal opening.
- 22. Apparatus according to claim 21, wherein said locking element is supported for generally radial movement relative to the annular wall opening;
- a biasing device resiliently biasing and supporting the locking element in a locking position for engaging said lock cooperating means when a tension coupler member is inserted into the distal opening; and
- a release device associated with the tension coupler member that is useable to selectively move the locking element out of its normal locking position against the bias of said biasing device and to permit free sliding movement of the tension coupler member relative to the annular opening wall.
- 23. Apparatus according to claim 19, including a gripper release device that moves said gripper to a tension element releasing position, said gripper releasing device being associated with and carried by said tension coupler member.
- 24. Apparatus according to claim 19, including a load sensor arranged to measure loads reacted by the gripper in a longitudinal direction.
- 25. Apparatus according to claim 24, wherein said load sensor is electrically energized and arranged to generate a load output signal during use; an electrical connector carried by said tension coupler member; electrical leads connecting the electrical connection with the load sensor for connecting the load sensor with a source of electrical energy and with a load indicator adapted to receive said load output signal.
