Claims
- 1. A device for the collection and processing of a blood product comprising a first container and at least one second container connected thereto, wherein a porous medium barring passage of red blood cells is interposed between the first container and the second container, the porous medium permitting platelets to pass therethrough until red blood cells block the porous medium.
- 2. The device of claim 1 wherein the fibers of the porous medium have been modified to present hydroxyl groups and carboxyl groups.
- 3. The device of claim 2 wherein an acid/acrylate monomer weight ratio in the modifying mixture used to provide hydroxyl groups and carboxyl groups is between about 0.01:1 and about 0.5:1.
- 4. The device of claim 3 wherein the CWST of the fibers is at least about 70 dynes/cm.
- 5. The device of claim 1 wherein the porous medium comprises polybutylene terephthalate fibers.
- 6. A filter element for processing a blood product comprising a porous, fibrous medium which removes leucocytes and permits platelets suspended in plasma to pass therethrough until red blood cells block the fibrous medium.
- 7. The filter element of claim 6 wherein said fibrous medium has a CWST of at least about 70 dynes/cm.
- 8. The filter element of claim 6 wherein the fibrous medium comprises polybutylene terephthalate fibers.
- 9. A device comprising a housing and means disposed within the housing for permitting platelets suspended in plasma to flow therethrough until red blood cells block the means.
