Claims
- 1. An article comprising:
a container comprising a first end, a second end, a sidewall extending from the first end to the second end, the sidewall having inner and outer surfaces; a separator located within the container, at least a portion of the separator circumferentially engaging the inner surface of the container; wherein the separator is a unitary component comprising at least one feature selected from the group consisting of at least two regions of differing densities and a density gradient.
- 2. The article of claim 1, wherein the separator comprises at least a first region having a first density and at least a second region having a second density greater than the first density.
- 3. The article of claim 2, wherein the second region is located substantially opposite the first region.
- 4. The article of claim 2, wherein the separator further comprises a middle region located between the first and second regions, at least a portion of the middle region being in circumferential contact with the inner surface of the container.
- 5. The article of claim 4, wherein the middle region has a density greater than or equal to the first density, and less than or equal to the second density.
- 6. The article of claim 5, wherein the middle region has a density greater than the first density and less than the second density.
- 7. The article of claim 2, wherein the first and second regions are formed of distinct materials.
- 8. The article of claim 2, wherein the first and second regions comprise the same material.
- 9. The article of claim 8, wherein the first region, the second region, or both the first region and the second region contain an additive.
- 10. The article of claim 9, wherein the additive has a density greater than the density of the material surrounding the additive.
- 11. The article of claim 9, wherein the additive has a density less than the density of the material surrounding the additive.
- 12. The article of claim 8, wherein the first region or the second region or both the first region and the second region comprises one or more bubbles or voids.
- 13. The article of claim 1, wherein the first end of the container is open and the second end of the container is closed, and wherein the container further comprises a closure in sealing engagement with the first end.
- 14. The article of claim 13, wherein the separator is removably attached to the closure, such that the separator is able to release from the closure upon centrifugation.
- 15. The article of claim 1, wherein the first end and the second end of the container are open, and wherein the container further comprises a first closure in sealing engagement with the first end and a second closure in sealing engagement with the second end.
- 16. A method for manufacturing a biological fluid collection container having therein a separator for separating components of a collected fluid sample, comprising the steps of:
providing the biological fluid collection container; placing the separator into the container, wherein the separator is manufactured by a method comprising the step of:
injecting one or more polymers into a mold to form a unitary component comprising at least one feature selected from the group consisting of at least two regions of differing densities and a density gradient.
- 17. The method of claim 16, wherein the injecting step comprises:
during at least a portion of injecting the one or more polymers, providing in at least one of the polymers one or more additives.
- 18. The method of claim 17, wherein the one or more additives are selected from the group consisting of beads and fibers.
- 19. The method of claim 18, wherein the one or more additives comprise hollow glass beads.
- 20. The method of claim 16, wherein the injecting step comprises:
during at least a portion of injecting the one or more polymers, providing in at least one of the polymers voids or bubbles.
- 21. The method of claim 20, wherein the voids or bubbles are provided by providing a supercritical or supercooled fluid in at least one of the polymers.
- 22. The method of claim 16, wherein the injecting step comprises injecting at least two polymers with differing densities.
- 23. The method of claim 16, wherein the injecting step comprises injecting a single polymer such that the density of the polymer is varied during the injection.
- 24. The method of claim 16, wherein the injecting step comprises at least one molding process selected from the group consisting of two-shot, overmolding, and coinjection.
