Claims
- 1. A device for slowing down signatures being transported in a folding machine, comprising:
- a rotary gripper defined by a set of oppositely rotating upper and lower rollers which receive the leading edge of the signature exiting the transporting device at a nip formed between the upper and lower rollers; and
- a deceleration drum for slowing down the signature through a smooth velocity profile, the deceleration drum having at least one pivot arm pivotally mounted on a pivot disc rotation about a first axis, the at least one pivot arm being connected to a control disc by a control link, the control disc rotating about a second axis parallel to, and offset from, the first axis, the rotary gripper being attached to an outward end of the at least one pivot arm.
- 2. The slow down device according to claim 1, wherein a plurality of rotary grippers are attached to an associated plurality of pivot arms.
- 3. A device for slowing down signatures being transported in a folding machine, comprising:
- at least one rotary gripper defined by a set of oppositely rotating upper and lower rollers for receiving a leading edge of a signature exiting a transporting device of the folding machine traveling at a high velocity at a nip formed between the upper and lower rollers; and
- a pivot arm connected at one end to the at least one rotary gripper and pivotally mounted at the other end to a means for rotating the pivot arm through a smooth velocity profile gradually slowing the velocity of the signature down.
- 4. The slow down device according to claim 3, wherein the rotating means is a deceleration drum comprising a pivot disc to which the pivot arm is pivotally mounted, the pivot disc rotating about a first axis.
- 5. The slow down device according to claim 4, further comprising a control disc connected to the pivot arm by a control link, the control disc rotating about a second axis parallel to, and offset from, the first axis.
- 6. The slow down device according to claim 3, wherein the rotating means is a rotating disc driven by an acceleration/deceleration device.
- 7. The slow down device according to claim 3, wherein the transporting device is a cutting cylinder.
- 8. The slow down device according to claim 3, wherein the transporting device is a folding cylinder.
- 9. The slow down device according to claim 3, wherein the transporting device is a tape conveyor system.
- 10. The slow down device according to claim 3, wherein a plurality of rotary grippers are attached to an associated plurality of pivot arms.
- 11. A device for slowing down signatures being transported in a folding machine, comprising:
- at least one rotary gripper defined by a set of oppositely rotating upper and lower rollers for receiving a leading edge of a signature exiting a transporting device of the folding machine traveling at a high velocity at a nip formed between the upper and lower rollers; and
- a deceleration drum having the at least one rotary gripper mounted thereon, the deceleration drum further including a cam and linkage for routing the rotary gripper through a smooth velocity profile gradually slowing the velocity of the signature down.
