Claims
- 1. Apparatus for collecting, at a collection location, polymetal compounds discharged from an underwater source of hydrothermal fluid, the apparatus comprising:
- a collector member for surrounding and fitting over the hydrothermal source;
- an underwater concentrating unit for increasing the concentration of polymetal compounds in the hydrothermal fluid to enrich the hydrothermal fluid with polymetal compounds, the concentrating unit being mounted above the collector member and in communication therewith, and
- a conveying duct in communication with and extending above the concentrating unit for conveying the hydrothermal fluid, enriched with polymetal compounds to the collection location.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, further including a hollow universal joint for connecting the collector member to the concentrating unit.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1, further including means disposed between the collector member and concentrating unit for regulating the flow of hydrothermal fluid to the concentrating unit.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3, further including a submerged power generating system comprising at least one turbine driven by a closed fluid cycle, the closed fluid cycle obtaining heat energy from the hydrothermal fluid; a pump, driven by the turbine, the pump conveying the hydrothermal fluid enriched with the polymetal compounds through the conveying duct to the collection location.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the collection unit comprises at least one frusto-conical element oriented to widen in the upward direction.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5, further including an axial duct extending through the frusto-conical element, the axial duct opening to the hydrothermal fluid in the collector at the upper end thereof and having a valve at the lower end thereof for allowing excess fluid to escape through the axial duct when the valve is open.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein a caisson is positioned above the concentrating unit, wherein the turbine is positioned within the caisson with the closed loop cycle having a first coil on the exterior of the concentrating unit and a second coil positioned within the axial duct within the concentrating unit.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1, further including means in the concentrating unit for injecting precipitating agents into the hydrothermal fluid to precipitate polymetal salts therefrom.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising centrifuging means in the concentrating unit for separating polymetal compounds from the hydrothermal fluid by centrifuging same.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the concentrating unit comprises an assembly of coaxial, frusto-conical settling plates spaced from one another and widening in a upward direction, the assembly having a lower part connected to the collector, means in the concentrating unit for supplying hydrothermal fluid thereto at a substantially constant rate, the assembly having an upper part opening into a collector tank, the collector tank having at least one exhaust orifice communicating with the surrounding water, and pipe means extending from the bottom of the collector tank to the conveying duct for delivering hydrothermal fluid with polymetal enrichment to the conveying duct.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1, further including means in the concentrating unit for injecting precipitation agents into the hydrothermal unit, the injecting means comprising a grid connected to an operative member, the grid having a differential pressure thereacross for activating the operating member.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 1, further including heave compensating means from which the apparatus is suspended.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12, further including means for chilling the hydrothermal fluid placed at the inlet of the concentrating unit.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the cooling means is a second coil placed in the inlet of the concentrating unit.
